Planned Parenthood To Spend $10 Million Against Pro-Life Candidates In 2024 Battleground State

Planned Parenthood will be spending millions of dollars to campaign against pro-life candidates in North Carolina for the 2024 election as Republicans attempt to gain control of the governor’s mansion. 

Planned Parenthood, Planned Parenthood Votes, and Planned Parenthood Action PAC North Carolina said on Thursday that they would be spending $10 million in support of pro-abortion candidates. The groups also said they want to knock on over a million doors in opposition to Republican Lt. Governor Mark Robinson’s campaign for governor. 

“Our goal is clear: To protect abortion access in North Carolina, we must ensure voters know abortion is on the ballot this year,” said Emily Thompson of Planned Parenthood Votes. 

Money will be spent on digital advertising, phone-banking, mailers, and efforts at college campuses, according to the Associated Press. Democrats have focused on making abortion a key issue in the 2024 election, hoping to drive out the vote of abortion supporters. North Carolina, a 2024 battleground state, was narrowly won by former President Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2020.

“As we head into November, all eyes are on North Carolina because abortion access across the entire region will be determined by the results of this election,” Thompson told the New York Times earlier this week. “Our success is absolutely critical this year to protect abortion access and defend the bodily autonomy of every North Carolinian.”

Last year, the Republican-controlled state legislature overrode Democratic Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of a law protecting unborn children at 12-weeks. 

The law, called the “Care for Women, Children, and Families Act,” limits abortions after 12 weeks, with exceptions for rape or incest until 20 weeks and fetal abnormalities until 24 weeks. The override required all Republicans in the state House, including a recently defected Democrat, to vote together. Cooper had hoped to flip some Republicans on the issue, arguing that it would lead “to harm for pregnant women and their families,” but was unable to do so. 

Robinson has said that he would support expanding protections for unborn children.

“Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is pro-life because of the painful and difficult experience he and his wife had, and his faith,” Robinson spokesman Mike Lonergan told the Times. “He’s said that as governor he would sign a heartbeat bill with exceptions for rape, incest and when the life of the mother is in danger.”

Lonergan said that Robinson “wants to turn North Carolina into a destination state for life by doing more to support women that choose life, like improving our foster-care and adoption systems, and preserving access to IVF.”

Robinson is running against Democrat Attorney General Josh Stein, a supporter of abortion.
