House Speaker Nancy Pelosi mocked socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in an interview published by USA Today on Monday without directly using the 29-year-old former bartender’s name.
CNN notes that Pelosi’s shot at Ocasio-Cortez came when she was “asked about the difficulties of governing a caucus in the House that is being challenged at every turn by AOC and others like her — liberals elected in the past few cycles who are deeply skeptical of the party establishment.”
Pelosi responded: “While there are people who have a large number of Twitter followers, what’s important is that we have large numbers of votes on the floor of the House.”
“Now, Pelosi didn’t mention AOC by name. But you’d have to be a real dummy to not understand who she was talking about. Ocasio-Cortez has 3.9 million Twitter followers, by far the most of any House member — including Pelosi (2.4 million followers),” CNN added.
Immediately following Pelosi’s response, USA Today noted: “Ocasio-Cortez has almost 4 million followers on Twitter.”
Pelosi’s shot at Ocasio-Cortez comes after her $93 trillion Green New Deal failed to garner a single vote of support last month when it was voted on in the Senate.
Pelosi took at shot at Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal earlier this year when she left Ocasio-Cortez off of the new House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.
When asked about Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal in an interview with Politico, Pelosi said: “It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The green dream, or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it, right?”
An independent analysis on the Green New Deal from American Action Forum concluded: “The Green New Deal is clearly very expensive. Its further expansion of the federal government’s role in some of the most basic decisions of daily life, however, would likely have a more lasting and damaging impact than its enormous price tag.”
The Daily Wire reported that “the enormous price tag, which amounts to over $650,000 per U.S. household, covers a low-carbon electricity grid, net zero emissions transportation system, guaranteed jobs, universal health care, guaranteed green housing, and food security.”
Democrats from the House and Senate have come out against Ocasio-Cortez’s plan, noting that it is unrealistic and extremely expensive.
Last month, the AFL-CIO, America’s largest organized-labor group, also came out against Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal.
“We welcome the call for labor rights and dialogue with labor, but the Green New Deal resolution is far too short on specific solutions that speak to the jobs of our members and the critical sections of our economy,” the AFL-CIO Energy Committee stated in a letter. “It is not rooted in an engineering-based approach and makes promises that are not achievable or realistic.”
“We will not accept proposals that could cause immediate harm to millions of our members and their families,” the letter continued. “We will not stand by and allow threats to our members’ jobs and their families’ standard of living go unanswered.”
