In an obvious attempt to portray their leftist darling, New York Democratic mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, as palatable to New York’s Jewish population, despite Mamdani’s openly anti-Israel views, The New York Times ran a puff piece in which of the five people they quoted openly supporting him, two were part of his campaign. Two more were friendly with the anti-Israel groups, such as Jewish Voice for Peace or Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, and the fifth favored another erstwhile candidate, Brad Lander, over him.

In the piece, titled “Many Jewish Voters Back Mamdani. And Many Agree With Him on Gaza,” the Times admitted, “It is difficult to determine how many Jewish voters supported Mr. Mamdani,” and acknowledged, “Neighborhoods with large numbers of Orthodox Jewish residents voted overwhelmingly for Mr. Cuomo. He also won other heavily Jewish areas like Riverdale in the Bronx. Still, the Times deflected, stating, “But Mr. Mamdani enjoyed a broad victory that suggests at least some backing from many different constituencies.”

To buttress their claim of significant Jewish support for Mamdani, the Times quoted a pro-Mamdani Manhattan bike mechanic who works as a canvasser for Mamdani, another canvasser for Mamdani, Mamdani’s communications director, a woman who attended an event for Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, a leftist group supporting Mamdani, a woman who said even Jews mad at Mamdani for his remarks  — which have included, as the Times noted, his endorsement of the view that Israel is conducting a genocide — would say they “couldn’t stand the Israeli government,”  and a woman rabbi from a leftist Jewish Reform synagogue.

Rabbi Marc Schneier, the founding senior rabbi of the Hampton Synagogue, declared, “Mamdani’s election is the greatest existential threat to a metropolitan Jewish population since the election of the notorious antisemite Karl Lueger in Vienna. Jewish leaders must come together as a united force to prevent a mass Jewish exodus from New York City.”

The Times’ notorious antisemitism has ranged from most recently running a misleading photo of a 20-month old child in Gaza and omitting the fact that he was suffering from a serious disease in order to paint a false picture of starvation (while eliding his three-year-old healthy brother from the photo), to lying by reporting Israel bombed a hospital in Gaza, to lying in the past by stating Palestinian Authority president Abbas favored a non-violent approach to Israel when it had been reported in August 2017 that Abbas insisted he would always pay the families of murderous terrorists who had been jailed by Israel, saying, “I don’t intend to cease payment for families of prisoner martyrs, even if it costs me my seat, I will continue to pay them until my last day.”

In the mid-twentieth century, the Times buried the Holocaust so it didn’t make the front pages, as described in “Buried by the Times: The Holocaust and America’s Most Important Newspaper.” In April 2019, the paper published a cartoon depicting former President Trump as a blind man wearing a skullcap while being led by Netanyahu, who was depicted as a dog on a leash with a Star of David collar.

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs researched 107 editorials on Israel and Jews published in the Times since 2016; David Bernstein, president and CEO of the organization, accused the Times of “a decided institutional bias” against Israel. Roughly a decade ago, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis (CAMERA) published a pamphlet titled “Indicting Israel: New York Times Coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict,” that delineated the Times’ consistent bias against Israel.
