Joe Biden joked Thursday that he goes home to Delaware every chance he gets.
Taking the stage at a campaign-style event to promote the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure law and its $1 billion in the Great Lakes Restoration initiative, Biden joked with attendees that he takes every opportunity to visit his home state.
“Before I begin, I want to just point out, I was having — just sitting and talking with [Marcia Fudge, former Ohio Congresswoman and current director of the Department of Housing and Urban Development], and she said something that reminded me of what I miss as well. She said, ‘it’s so good to be home in Ohio.’ No, I really mean it. And I said, ‘you’re probably the only one that understands that every time I get a chance, I go home to Delaware.’ You think I’m joking. I’m not,” Biden said.
“I represented Delaware for 36 years as a United States Senator, and just like most Congressional districts, the good news is the bad news: everybody knows you,” Biden added, leaning into the microphone at his podium.
A clip of the moment was shared to Twitter by Chad Gilmartin, former Principal Assistant Press Secretary and Special Assistant to former President Donald Trump. The response from conservatives was unified.

“I’m absolutely certain he’s not joking,” replied one Twitter user.
“We noticed, Joe,” added another.
“Yeah Joe, this is kind of a problem. You spent 25% of your first term in Delaware hiding in your basement and adopting pets for photo ops,” said one user.
“Jokes are usually funny,” added another.
Biden’s remark was confirmed by news reports. The New York Post reported in January that Biden spent 28% of his first year in office, totaling at least 101 days, in Delaware, almost always at his house in Wilmington or the Biden family’s vacation home in Rehoboth Beach. The Washington Examiner added that most of those trips home took place on weekends. Biden spent 26 of his 52 weekends in Delaware, the Examiner reported. He spent only 10 of his weekends at the White House. Biden’s representatives have said, via the New York Post, that Biden simply likes to be home. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also refused to comment on Biden’s activities while he was at home. “I can confirm we are not going to be providing information about the comings and goings of the president’s grandchildren or people visiting him in Delaware,” Psaki said, via the Post.
The Delaware comment wasn’t the only unusual joke Biden made. Shortly before he left the podium, Biden said he needed to leave. “The reason they tell me I’ve got to head out — I hadn’t planned on going immediately — is because the weather going back to Washington and there’s a little thing going on in Europe right now,” he said, obviously in reference to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Shortly before departing for the Ohio event, Biden told CNN’s Jeremy Diamond that he believed a Russain incursion into Ukraine was imminent, as The Daily Wire reported. “Yes. My sense is it will happen in the next several days,” Biden said.
Despite spending a large part of his time in his home state, Biden is underwater even there. A recent nationwide poll conducted by CIVIQS found that Biden’s approval sits at just 34% nationwide, compared to 56% disapproval, and is currently under 43% in 46 out of 50 states. In Delaware, CIVIQS found that Biden’s approval is just 36%, compared to 54% disapproval.
