NFL tight end Darren Waller’s wife, Kelsey Plum, made a joke about why her husband was recently traded by the Las Vegas Raiders, saying it has to do with the coach not getting an invite to their wedding.

The New York Giants acquired Waller on Tuesday, swapping a third-round draft pick for the Pro Bowler. This could prove challenging for Plum, a WNBA guard for the Las Vegas Aces. These newlyweds just got hitched on March 4.

“Darren Waller JUST GOT MARRIED to Kelsey Plum of the Las Vegas Aces and Josh McDaniels’ wedding present was to trade him to the New York Giants. McDaniels is NOT a romantic,” former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III wrote.

“Prolly cause he wasn’t invited to the wedding lol,” Plum replied to that suggestion.

The tweet exchange quickly went viral, with fans reacting with a mix of humor and outrage. As of Wednesday morning, it had more than 11.6 million views.

Plum next posted in her Instagram Stories and shared a screenshot of Griffin’s tweet over a photo of her and Waller on their wedding day.

“Actually couldn’t be better, we’re so excited, NY let’s get it,” the WNBA player shared with a heart emoji.

Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels drew criticism earlier this month for accidentally revealing news of the wedding while speaking to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Fox News reported.

Waller was rumored to be upset with McDaniels after several publications picked up the story, including the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which announced the March 4 wedding date on social media. Waller and Plum had intended to keep the nuptial ceremony details private.

Two weeks ago, McDaniels said Waller “will be a big part of what we’re going to do going forward.” Meanwhile, the NFL Network reported that the Raiders had been shopping him around for more than a year.

Waller had four years left on his deal with the Raiders after signing a three-year contract extension worth $51 million in September, the publication noted. Now the Giants are only guaranteed to pay him $11 million for the 2023 season since there is an opt-out clause after this year.

Plum, an All-Star guard for the Aces who helped the team win the WNBA title last year, is preparing for the 2023 season, which starts in May.
