Former NFL receiver Mike Williams died on Tuesday after a freak accident on a construction site. He was 36 years old.
WIVB <a href="https://www.wivb.com/news/we-need-prayer-warriors-former-nfl-receiver-mike-williams-surviving-friday-after-being-taken-off-life-support/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Williams was taken off life support late last week — including the use of a ventilator — at St. Joseph&#8217;s Hospital in Tampa, Florida, after suffering complications from the incident on August 21.
Williams was reportedly struck in the head with a steel beam while doing electrical work, but his situation took a turn for the worse after the cut on his head became infected, a friend told the news station. Williams was hospitalized at the start of the month and was eventually induced into a coma, the report said.
&#8220;We are saddened to hear of the untimely death of Mike Williams, which has left our organization, his former teammates and fans with heavy hearts,&#8221; the Tampa Bay Buccaneers said in a statement. &#8220;We send our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones as they mourn this tragedy.&#8221;

Williams was selected in the fourth-round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Syracuse and played five seasons in the league, including four with the Buccaneers, one with the Buffalo Bills, and appeared temporarily on the roster of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tierney Lyle, the mother of Williams’ 8-year daughter, <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/sports/bucs/2023/09/09/mike-williams-ventilator-life-support-tierney-lyle-hadley-engelhard/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that the girl told Williams at the hospital, &#8220;I love you, daddy,&#8221; to which Williams acknowledged by making a grunting noise.

ESPN host Mike Greenberg struggled to keep his emotions in check during Tuesday morning&#8217;s broadcast of &#8220;Get Up,&#8221; responding to the season-ending injury that took quarterback Aaron Rodgers out of his Monday night debut game with the New York Jets.
Greenberg got a few beats into his opening monologue before calling everything to a halt, saying that he could not &#8220;pretend this is a normal morning&#8221; and just get through it.

The show seemed to begin as usual, but after a few lines, Greenberg paused and then redirected. &#8220;Alright, I can’t do this. I just can’t … Stop it. Kill the music; kill the graphics; kill the video.&#8221;
&#8220;I can’t pretend this is alright. I cannot pretend this is a normal morning. I cannot do the big voice. I cannot pretend the energy is here,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;I’m sorry. I said I’m going to try and do the show normal today but these are not normal circumstances.&#8221;
Greenberg went on to say that he had still not really been able to process what had happened the night before, just four plays into Rodgers&#8217; first game with his new team.
Rodgers was initially <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/09/12/what-went-wrong-on-play-that-likely-ended-aaron-rodgers-season/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pulled from the game</a> after he was tackled by Buffalo Bills edge rusher Leonard Floyd, and after negative x-rays, officials feared an Achilles injury. That was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/aaron-rodgers-season-over-after-tearing-achilles-on-4th-play-for-new-team" target="_blank" rel="noopener">later confirmed</a>, along with the Jets&#8217; worst fears that Rodgers was likely out for the entirety of the season.
Greenberg said he certainly understood the fans who wanted to blame the turf — or blame anyone or anything — for what had happened, but that sometimes football was just going to be football.

A fight broke out in the parking lot of a high school in Utica, New York, on Saturday, and when a Utica City School District security officer tried to intervene, he was shot in the back of the head.
“A large fight occurred after a football game at a Proctor High School parking lot off of Tilden Avenue,” Utica Police Chief Mark Williams <a href="https://www.wktv.com/news/crime/updated-shooting-after-proctor-high-school-football-game-security-officer-shot-in-critical-but-stable/article_108f3bd4-4f57-11ee-bb1c-673aa7bd8a6c.html">stated</a>. “During the fight, two Utica City School District security officers attempted to break up the fight. During the altercation, shots rang out. A UCSD security officer was shot in the back of the head. He was transported to the local hospital, where he&#8217;s listed as critical but stable condition.&#8221;

Utica School District Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Davis issued a statement saying that all on-campus activities would be canceled on Sunday as well as after-school activities for Monday.
The violent group that was part of the fight had been turned away from Binghamton High School. The stadium for Proctor High School has metal detectors, but the security guard <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12502573/Utica-shooting-school-security-guard.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">refused to grant the group permission</a> to enter as he surmised they had weapons.
“He suspected that something wasn&#8217;t right with this group and he refused to lead into the stadium,” Williams said.
The Utica Police Department offered their gratitude to the security officer on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064802073577" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook</a> on Sunday, writing, “At this point we will not be releasing his name, however we are offering our sincerest prayers for a full recovery. We would also be remiss if we did not mention the heroics of this security officer and the others who attempted to break up the fight and put themselves in harm’s way so the spectators and students watching the game were not in danger.”
“Although an arrest has been made, the investigation into the shooting is still on-going,&#8221; they wrote, adding, &#8220;The suspect, at 16 year old male, is not a current student at Proctor High School, but is enrolled in an alternative educational program. Due to his age we are unable to release his name, but will work diligently with the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office to seek the ability to prosecute the suspect as adult.”
The police department stated that the juvenile was charged with:

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joseph-kennedy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Kennedy</a>, the high school football coach in Washington state who won a landmark <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/supreme-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Supreme Court</a> case after losing his job for praying on the field with students, announced on Wednesday that he was stepping away from football to advocate for religious liberty.
Kennedy was placed on administrative leave from Bremerton High School in 2015 after complaints about his on-field prayers, then eventually lost his job. He was later <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/coach-fired-for-praying-at-football-game-reinstated-to-old-role-gets-nearly-2-million-settlement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reinstated</a> to his position after the Supreme Court <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-supreme-court-affirms-religious-liberty-rules-in-favor-of-public-high-school-football-coach-punished-for-praying-after-games" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled this summer</a> that his First Amendment rights had been violated. 
On Wednesday, Kennedy <a href="https://coachjoekennedy.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Kennedy-Resigns-from-Bremerton-High-School-RELEASE.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he was resigning from his position at Bremerton to care for a sick family member and be a religious liberty advocate. 
“I believe I can best continue to advocate for constitutional freedom and religious liberty by working from outside the school system so that is what I will do,&#8221; Kennedy said in a statement. &#8220;I will continue to work to help people understand and embrace the historic ruling at the heart of our case. As a result of our case, we all have more freedom, not less. That should be celebrated and not disrespected.”  
“As I have demonstrated, we must make a stand for what we believe in,&#8221; he added. &#8220;In my case, I made a stand to take a knee. I encourage all Americans to make their own stand for freedom and our right to express our faith as we see fit. I appreciate the people of Bremerton, the coaches, staff and especially the students and wish them all well. Bremerton will always be home.” 
Kennedy only coached in one game back at Bremerton before announcing his resignation. Bremerton <a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/following-years-of-legal-battles-praying-football-coach-joe-kennedy-resigns-after-1-game#:~:text=BREMERTON%2C%20Wash.&amp;text=Joe%20Kennedy%20strode%20alone%20to,School%2027%2D12%20Friday%20night." target="_blank" rel="noopener">defeated</a> Mount Douglas Secondary School 27-12, after which Kennedy prayed by himself in the middle of the field. According to the Seattle Times, he plans on moving to Florida, where he lived as his legal saga played out.
“The district has received Mr. Kennedy’s resignation and it is pending board approval at tomorrow’s regularly scheduled meeting,” Bremerton spokesperson Karen Bevers <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/praying-bremerton-football-coach-joe-kennedy-quits-after-one-game/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Times.

In June, the Supreme Court ruled that Kennedy had been discriminated against because of his faith. 
“Here, a government entity sought to punish an individual for engaging in a brief, quiet, personal religious observance doubly protected by the Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment. And the only meaningful justification the government offered for its reprisal rested on a mistaken view that it had a duty to ferret out and suppress,” Justice Neil Gorsuch <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/high-school-football-coach-scores-big-win-supreme-court-post-game-prayer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. “Religious observances even as it allows comparable secular speech. The Constitution neither mandates nor tolerates that kind of discrimination.”

Former <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/las-vegas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Las Vegas Raiders</a> wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was sentenced to a minimum of three years and a maximum of ten years in state prison this week after he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-nfl-first-round-pick-pleads-guilty-to-drunk-driving-crash-that-killed-las-vegas-woman">pled guilty</a> to two charges related to a drunk driving accident that resulted in a woman&#8217;s death.
Ruggs, a first-round draft pick in 2020, reached 156 mph in his Corvette Stingray before plowing into Tintor’s Toyota RAV4 in 2021, propelling Tina Tintor’s vehicle 571 feet, according to police. Ruggs’ girlfriend was also injured in the crash. Two hours after the fatal crash, a blood draw revealed that Ruggs’ blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit in Nevada at 0.161.
&#8220;To the parents and family of Ms. Tintor, I sincerely apologize for the pain and suffering,&#8221; Ruggs, 24, said in court on Wednesday. &#8220;My actions are not a true reflection of me.&#8221;

District Attorney Steven Wolfson said that the DUI charge was “the most serious charge the law allows” when a person is killed by a drunk driver. The DUI resulting in death charge was based on the result of the blood draw, which Ruggs’ lawyers challenged.
“I recognize this outcome is not sufficient to punish Ruggs for the loss the Tintor family has suffered,” a statement from Wolfson said earlier this year, “but there was a legitimate concern that a court would have suppressed the result of the blood draw. We would have lost the felony DUI charge. We couldn’t take that chance. This resolution sends Ruggs to prison for up to 10 years on a felony DUI conviction and brings closure to the Tintor family.”
The day after the crash, Ruggs was released from prison on a $150,000 bond and cut by the Raiders. He has been confined to his home ever since, only being allowed to leave his house to work out twice a week. Ruggs will remain under house arrest until his sentencing.

The former receiver was a standout at the University of Alabama before being drafted 12th overall by Las Vegas in 2020. At the time of the fatal crash, Ruggs was leading the Raiders in receiving yards.

In a letter that addressed what the group called the &#8220;cancel culture&#8221; against the Native American population and the erasure of its &#8220;steadfast role in American history, including serving as counselors to the Founding Fathers in the creation of the U.S. constitution.&#8221;
The letter talked about the history of the Washington football team and it&#8217;s relationship with the Native American community dating back to its 1933 season when they were named the <a href="https://sportsteamhistory.com/boston-redskins/#:~:text=The%20team%20was%20founded%20in%201932%20by%20George%20Preston%20Marshall,for%20more%20than%2080%20years." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boston Redskins</a>.
&#8220;At this moment in history, we are formally requesting that the team revitalize its relationship with the American Indian community by (i) changing the name back to &#8216;The Redskins&#8217; which recognizes America&#8217;s original inhabitants and (ii) using the team&#8217;s historic name and legacy to encourage Americans to learn about, not cancel, the history of America&#8217;s tribes and our role in the founding of this Great Nation,&#8221; the letter read.
&#8220;Should we need to encourage a national boycott similar to what happened with Anheuser Busch (Bud Light) which is now down $27 billion (note, not one brick thrown, not one highway blocked, not one bridge burned) — WE WILL DO JUST THAT,&#8221; the letter <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/native-american-group-threatens-commanders-boycott-name-change" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a>.
The letter closed out by noting that in 2023, this &#8220;oppression and arbitrary and capricious recognition of U.S. history and Constitutional rights is not acceptable.&#8221; The group also vowed to stand their ground because, if &#8220;you don&#8217;t acknowledge history, we are doomed to repeat it.&#8221;
In 2020, the team announced it was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/redskins-cave-announce-thorough-review-of-name-here-are-the-top-suggestions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">removing Redskins</a> from its name and two years later announced the national professional football team would be called the Washington Commanders.

The bill would transfer the existing RFK property from the Secretary of Interior to the GSA. The GSA would then lease it to the city of D.C. for 99 years with an option review.

D.C. non-voting delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) also <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/comer-norton-introduce-the-d-c-robert-f-kennedy-memorial-stadium-campus-revitalization-act/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cosponsored</a> the bill and supported its speedy passage.
“The RFK site sits on underused federal land in D.C. that could be redeveloped, generating tax revenue for D.C.,” Norton said. “Neither the Mayor nor the Council Chair opposes this bill, which would allow D.C. to put the site to productive use — a vast improvement on the current state of affairs. I look forward to working with Chairman Comer to pass this bill as quickly as possible.&#8221;
RFK Stadium was first built in 1961, originally called Washington, D.C., Stadium. It held its last event in 2017, but the Washington Redskins played their last game at RFK in 1996.

Now, with the Washington Commanders sold to a new ownership group, federal officials hope that the team will come back to the district. While D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser suggested that the existing stadium would be torn down, she remained confident a new one would be built in hopes of attracting D.C.&#8217;s NFL team.
New owner Josh Harris, who grew up in the area, had previously expressed his appreciation for what RFK had to offer.
&#8220;We would love to have a stadium where the opposing players fear to come, and our fans love to come, and our players love to come and feel welcomed,” he <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/07/27/comer-republican-dc-bill-rfk-stadium-commanders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> after buying the team. “That’s what I experienced at RFK — and whatever happens with the stadium, that’s the kind of stadium experience I want to create.”

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New England Patriots</a> defensive back Jack Jones was arrested this week at Boston Logan International Airport for allegedly trying to bring two firearms onto a plane.
TSA agents found the firearms in Jones&#8217; carry-on luggage when he went through airport security on Friday evening in Terminal B.
The 25-year-old was later arrested by Massachusetts State Police and taken to the State Police-Logan Airport Barracks where he posted bail.
NBC Boston <a href="https://www.nbcboston.com/news/sports/patriots-jack-jones-arrested-after-trying-to-bring-2-guns-onto-logan-flight-police-say/3070548/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Jones was charged with possession of a concealed weapon inside a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a firearm ID card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
The Patriots said in a statement that they were aware of the incident and that they were reviewing the matter.
&#8220;We have been notified that Jack Jones was arrested at Logan Airport earlier today,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;We are in the process of gathering more information and will not be commenting further at this time.&#8221;
He will be arraigned in federal court next week.
Social media users pointed out online Friday night that Jones commented last month on Memphis Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant being suspended by the NBA for 25 games without pay after he was seen waving a gun in a video posted to social media.

On Thursday, league owners voted against opposition by coaches to approve a one-year trial for a rule that puts the ball on the receiving team&#8217;s 25-yard line &#8220;if there is a fair catch on a free kick (kickoff and safety kick)&#8221; anywhere between the 25-yard line and the goal line. Ravens head coach and former special teams coach Harbaugh said, &#8220;The fair catch rule, we had a chance to weigh in on that with all the special teams coaches.”
&#8220;We had a long talk and discussion about that,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We weren&#8217;t for it. We voted against it. We think it&#8217;s going to create more high-speed head trauma than not having it in there. That&#8217;s our position on it. But we&#8217;ll see. They want to give it a shot and take a look at it.&#8221;

Legendary NFL running back Jim Brown, one the league&#8217;s first superstars, has died. He was 87 years old.
A spokesperson for Brown said that he passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Thursday night while surrounded by his family.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my husband, Jim Brown,” his wife Monique Brown said in a statement. “He passed peacefully last night at our LA home.”
“To the world he was an activist, actor, and football star,” she added. “To our family, he was a loving and wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Our hearts are broken.”
The NFL released a statement saying that it was &#8220;heartbroken by the passing of the legendary Jim Brown.&#8221;
&#8220;One of the greatest players in NFL history, a true pioneer and activist,&#8221; the NFL added. &#8220;Jim Brown’s legacy will live on forever.&#8221;
Brown had not been doing well and was recently visited by some of his closest friends, including Marshall Faulk, Eric Dickerson, and Flavor Flav, TMZ <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2023/05/19/jim-brown-dead-87-legendary-football-nfl-player-cleveland-browns/?adid=social-tw">reported</a>.
Brown was selected 6th overall in the 1957 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns where he played nine seasons before retiring at age 30. During his time in the NFL, he was the league&#8217;s leading rusher for all but one season. He was a three-time MVP.

The winner of this week is NFL quarterback <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/ep-94-is-lamar-jackson-a-top-10-nfl-qb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lamar Jackson</a>. Why? The dual-threat quarterback just scored the deal of a lifetime from his team, the Baltimore Ravens, without an agent — thereby saving himself a whole lot of dinero.
Jackson is now the highest-paid quarterback in the league having successfully negotiated a five-year, $260 million deal with $185 million in guaranteed money, as announced Monday. Less than two months ago, Jackson had requested a trade from the organization — which seemed unwilling to pony up the sort of cash he was demanding.
On Thursday, Yahoo Sports <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/as-ravens-reach-mega-deal-with-their-qb-one-lamar-jackson-stays-in-baltimore--and-another-he-explains-is-out-202359878.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that both Jackson and the Ravens were unwilling to discuss what changed from that request to his now seismic contract.
“Today we’re going to keep it about the future,” Jackson said during a news conference about the monster signing. “I’m not really worried about what happened in the past.”
“I really didn’t care for other teams,” Jackson said. “I wanted to get something done here. I wanted to be a Raven.”
As told by Yahoo, &#8220;Jackson and his mother Felicia Jones, who doubles as his manager, did not hire an NFLPA-certified agent to negotiate this contract. So Jackson described a negotiating stance that essentially required him to fully compartmentalize his role as QB.&#8221;
“If you’re going to represent yourself, you’ve got to have a strong mind,&#8221; Jackson said Thursday. &#8220;I wouldn’t say you can get out there and put your feelings into it.&#8221;
Under NFL rules, an agent can only take 3% of a player&#8217;s contract he helped negotiate. That percentage pales in comparison to other sports leagues, where agents can make a commission of up to 15% — but it still would have meant that Jackson would have to fork over millions of dollars.

Now he won&#8217;t have to do that, and he and his mother can keep more cash. Surely, other players around the league are hitting up their agents, saying, &#8220;What am I paying you for?&#8221;
Jackson has some advice for those guys — man up and put on your business hat.
“It’s different from just playing football,” Jackson explained Thursday of the negotiating process. “You’ve got to put the game outside, put the game in one part of your life and speak to a grown man with millions and billions of dollars, and understand terms and different language.&#8221;
Now the Ravens and Jackson have their eyes set on the Lombardi Trophy.
&#8220;I really want to finish my career here,&#8221; the former Heisman winner said. &#8220;I want to win a Super Bowl here.&#8221;
You have to love stories where people cut out the middle man or so-called experts and get the job done themselves — especially when that person is a <a href="https://www.sportscasting.com/lamar-jacksons-life-is-more-tragic-than-you-think/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">26-year-old who grew up in poverty</a> and is now multi-millionaire many times over.
