A Republican councilwoman in New Jersey was found dead inside her vehicle after she was shot multiple times Wednesday night.

Police identified 30-year-old Eunice Dwumfour as the victim but are still looking for a suspect and a motive, ABC 7 reported. Dwumfour appeared to have been driving when she was shot, crashing her white SUV after being gunned down.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call Detective Rebecca Morales of the Sayreville Police Department at 732-727-4444 or Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office 732-745-3477,” the prosecutor’s office said, according to Fox News.

Some witnesses reportedly said they spotted the gunman running away from the complex where Dwumfour was killed.

Dwumfour was elected to the Borough of Sayreville City Council in an upset victory over her Democratic opponent in 2021. She was also a business analyst and part-time EMT and heavily involved in a Nigerian church group, The New York Post reported

“Eunice was a dedicated member of our Borough Council who was truly committed to serve all of our residents. The fact that she was taken from us by a despicable criminal act makes this incident all the more horrifying,” Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said. “As Mayor I have worked very closely with Eunice in her time on the Borough Council. Beyond her dedication to our community, I can share that she was a woman of deep faith and worked hard to integrate her strong Christian beliefs in to her daily life as a person and a community leader. On a personal note, I can’t adequately express my feeling of sorrow at the loss of a friend.”

Bob Hugin, chairman of the New Jersey GOP, expressed his sorrow for the murdered Republican councilwoman in a statement shared with The Daily Wire.

“On behalf of the New Jersey Republican State Committee, I would like to express our horror and deepest sorrow at the senseless violence that claimed the life of Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour,” Hugin said. “We will remember Eunice for her steadfast dedication to the community, as well as her deep and abiding Christian faith. We have the utmost confidence that law enforcement will bring the perpetrators of this heartbreaking tragedy to justice. God Bless Councilwoman Dwumfour and her family.”

New Jersey Democratic Governor Phil Murphy also issued a statement, mourning the death of the public servant.

“Her career of public service was just beginning, and by all accounts she had already built a reputation as a committed member of the Borough Council who took her responsibility with the utmost diligence and seriousness,” Murphy said. “I send my condolences to Councilwoman Dwumfour’s family and friends, her governing body colleagues, and the entire Sayreville community.”
