The Smiths front man, Morrissey, is known for having no small opinions, and in an interview published on his own website on Tuesday, the singer tore into the U.K.’s politicians — on both the left and the right — over their support for a Muslim food festival that he claims is cruel and unusual.
Morrissey claims that Halal meat production, which processes animals in accordance with Muslim law, is “evil,” and that Halal accreditation “can only be given by supporters of Isis.”
The musician is no fan of meat, or anyone who cooks it, and Muslims are no exception (he’s also taken issue with Kosher butchers in the past, in a vaguely racist and anti-Semitic rant). In fact, when your fair reporter attended a music festival where Morrissey was playing several years ago, all meat sales across the festival were stopped more than an hour ahead of Morrissey’s call time, as part of an agreement inked in Morrissey’s artist rider.
In his screed, Morrissey also hits out at U.K. politicians from both the left and right, including U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, claiming the pair have stood idly by “as millions of animals had their throats slit to mark the occasion. I wondered what kind of compassion [May] could possibly have.” He went on to claim that May is “incapable of leadership. She cannot say her own name unless it’s written down on a cue card in front of her,” and that Khan “cannot talk properly.”
This isn’t the first time that Morrissey has made what appear to be racist statements against a group of people. Years ago, he was raked over the coals for calling the Chinese “sub human,” and has no qualms about expressing his distaste for anyone who does not speak English.
His rationale? The worst form of racism is against animals, he says, so his racism against people just doesn’t count: “If you eat animals, isn’t it a display of hatred for a certain species? And what gives you the right to eat another species or race? Would you eat people from Sri Lanka?”
