Democrats should run “beloved” figures such as Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey in the future as presidential candidates, said neo-Marxist filmmaker Michael Moore in a Sunday-aired interview with left-wing CNN’s Jake Tapper.
Implicitly describing Hillary Clinton as unlikable, Moore called for a celebrity Democrat response to Trump in the next presidential election:
“Frankly, Democrats would be better off if they ran Oprah or Tom Hanks, or, why don’t we run beloved people? We have so many of them. The Republicans do this. They run Reagan and The Terminator, and other people. Why don’t we run somebody that the American people love, that they are really draw to? And they are smart, and have good politics, and all that. Why don’t Democrats do that?”
The Democrat Party, according to Moore, was insufficiently left-wing. He called for a more “progressive” party platform:
“My sincere hope is that DNC, that there is a clean sweep in this party. They all have to go, and they have to make room for the progressive Democrats who are gonna come in here, they’re gonna be needed to fight the things that Trump is going to do to the people of this country and the world. And we need young people, and women, and others who are going to really be the voice of this party. Not the same old same old.”
Moore implied that Trump’s supporters were not motivated by the president-elect’s policy proposals, dismissing their support as superficially grounded in a nebulous desire for “change.”
He claimed that “Trump people” he spoke with in New York City told him they would have voted for a socialist like Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT).
