Meryl Streep admitted that she’s been separated from her husband for six years.
The three-time Academy Award-winning actress tied the knot with Don Gummer in 1978 and remains legally wed to him even now, 45 years later. But they aren’t currently together and haven’t been for some time.
Streep’s rep shared a statement on Friday on behalf of the couple. “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” it read.
The couple was last seen walking the red carpet together at the 90th Academy Awards in 2018 when Streep was nominated for her role as Katharine Graham in “The Post.”
Despite being separated, the “Sophie’s Choice” star has been seen wearing her wedding ring even recently.

Streep and Gummer were notoriously private about their relationship over the decades and didn’t often mention it during interviews. But during a 2002 conversation with Vogue, Streep revealed that the secret to a long and happy marriage was “goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while.”
“There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It’s always an enormous negotiation. But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can’t imagine eschewing one for the other,” Streep told the outlet.
Streep was previously involved with actor John Cazale in the 1970s, caring for him after he was diagnosed with lung cancer until he died in 1978. She met and wed Gummer that same year after six months of dating. They had four children together: Henry Wolfe Gummer (born 1979), Mary Willa “Mamie” Gummer (born 1983), Grace Jane Gummer (born 1986), and Louisa Jacobson Gummer (born 1991). They also have five grandchildren.
Like most of Hollywood, Streep is an outspoken leftist who frequently uses her platform to criticize Republicans and conservative policies. She also advocates for feminist causes.
