Xytex, a Georgia-based sperm bank, is being sued by a lesbian couple from Canada for selling them sperm from a guy under false pretenses.

When Angie Collins and her partner Elizabeth Hanson chose “Donor 9623” as the man to father their children. they believed they were getting the handsome-faced “renaissance man” whose online profile boasted of having an IQ of 160, a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, a master’s degree in artificial intelligence, and being on his way to a Ph.D. in neuroscience engineering.

It turns out it was all a lie, including the profile pic, in which the man digitally removed a large mole from his face.

The donor, James Christian Aggeles, a 39-year-old Georgia resident, is far from what he appeared. According to NYDailyNews, Aggeles “suffered from schizophrenia and had been in and out of mental hospitals. He didn’t have a degree in anything because he never finished college, and he also seemed incapable of holding down a job. The year before Collins and Hanson found him, he pleaded guilty to breaking into a house and stealing musical instruments. He spent eight months in prison and had to spend the rest of his 10-year sentence on probation.”

After seven years, Collins and Hanson learned the reality of Aggeles when Xytec accidentally left his name in an email sent to the couple. All it took was a Google search to realize they’d been swindled.

“It was like a dream turned nightmare in an instant,” Angie Collins, told the Toronto Star adding that, ” it made her heart sink like a lead ball into my stomach.”

Aggeles deposited sperm from 2000 to 2014 and his samples were used by 26 different families, ultimately creating 36 children, 17 girls and 19 boys, who now range in age from toddlers to 12.

Collins and Hanson’s San Francisco-based lawyer, Nancy Hersh, also represents 15 other clients who may join the suit against Xytec and Aggeles. Hersh says there may be even more kids because some of samples were stored and used after 2014.

Hersh calls Collins the “Erin Brockovich of the sperm-bank set.”
