Retired talk show host Maury Povich said he’d be willing to make a comeback if actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson would agree to take a DNA test and confirm once and for all whether they are half brothers.
Povich, longtime host of “Maury” — a talk show famous for surprise DNA test results — surprised McConaughey with a video message during a recent E! News interview and said he’d happily come out of retirement to solve the mystery.
“We could do primetime, ‘DNA: Maury’s Back With Woody and Matthew.’ I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair,” Povich said, promising to come out of retirement temporarily if the two actors agreed. “Woody’s got my number. I’m ready.”
McConaughey revealed the possible link to television host Kelly Ripa, saying that the question had arisen from something his mother said while they were traveling.
“In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad,’” McConaughey said. “Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”
At the time, McConaughey said he wasn’t sure he’d want to take a test to find out for sure whether he and Harrelson actually shared a father. “It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.”
But by the time Povich posed the question, the “Lincoln Lawyer” star appeared to have come around to the idea. “I don’t know if we’re going to be calling you to do it on your show, but I like the way you’re thinking,” he said.
