Former Disney star Demi Lovato said she started getting into alcohol and drugs at the age of 13 because she was already being “bullied” and was “looking for an escape.”

During the 30-year-old actress‘ appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast Wednesday with host Alex Cooper, Lovato talked about her ongoing battle to stay sober and admitted she started drinking at a very early age.

“I started experimenting for the first time when I was 12, or 13,” Lovato explained. “I got into a car accident and they prescribed me opiates.”

“My mom didn’t think she would have to lock up the opiates from her 13-year-old daughter, but I was already drinking at that point,” she added. “I had been bullied and was looking for an escape.”

Demi said once her mom realized “how many” pills her daughter was taking, she “locked them up.”

The superstar singer also explained that in her “teenage years” she “drank a lot” and said she’s since realized that first time she snuck a beer from her step-dad’s refrigerator and drank it alone that “should have been a major red flag.”

“At 17, it was the first time I tried coke and, like, loved it too much and then that kinda bled into me going to treatment right after I turned 18,” the “Sober” hitmaker shared.

The actress said that when she did “finally” decide to get “help” her team was “really supportive” because it “had been a long time coming.”

The “Camp Rock” star recently opened up about the “rough” time she had last year and her decision to go to rehab to get help following her near-death overdose in July 2018, as The Daily Wire previously reported.

During “The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music,” the pop singer talked about her battle with addiction and her latest rehab stint as she opened up about the inspiration for her new music.

“Everything that I write about comes from personal experiences, and I had gone through a rough time last year,” Lovato said. “And I went back to treatment, and when I came out, I had all of this unresolved trauma that like I hadn’t dealt with, or that I started to deal with in treatment. And then when I came out, I was like, ‘It’s OK to be angry and feel those things.'”
