Actress and writer Lena Dunham has been absent from the public eye for a while, retreating from the spotlight after a rough 2016 election cycle, but it seems she’s back and posing nude again on social media as if the last several years never happened.
People Magazine reports that Dunham has been on a campaign to encourage “body positivity” and good thoughts about loving yourself at your current weight — an issue Dunham says she’s struggled with.
Last week, she was in France helping to promote Quentin Tarantino’s new film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” about the Charles Manson murders (Dunham appears in a cameo in the trailer as one of Manson’s acolytes, though she’s hinted that her part may be larger). On her way home, she apparently made a stopoff in Wales, in the U.K., and that’s where she posted her naked magnum opus.

On Instagram, the same post appears with the caption, “Any negativity that comes your way is just an excuse to love yourself even more, right? Comment below with a reason you love yourself. For every comment in the next week, I’ll be donating a dollar to @FriendlyHouseLA, a residential program for women recovering from substance and alcohol addiction. Peggy Albrecht Friendly House is a charity that specifically supports women who are in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse. Dunham has spoken at length about her efforts to wean herself off benzodiazepines — medications like Klonopin which are prescribed to treat severe anxiety and mood disorders — which she says she abused for more than three years. Dunham is nearly a year sober, according to an interview she did last fall.
The post was apparently meant to start a trend, though it does not appear many of Dunham’s celebrity friends have followed suit and posted their own naked photos for the world to comment on for charity.
She has been doing better, of late, Dunham says, and back in February, broke her silence temporarily to proclaim that she had entered a new state of “big, generous, jiggly happiness.” At the time, though, she was still working on shedding clothing and posted a photo of herself clad in lingerie instead of fully nude.
“I’ve spent a lot of time in this life feeling like too much,” she wrote on Instagram. “Too hungry. Too anxious. Too loud. Too needy. Too sick. Too dramatic. Too honest. Too sexy (jk lol.) I was always sent the message, in insidious ways, that I took up too much room and demanded too much from life and sometimes gave too much to people who didn’t want any at all.”
