Chelsea Manning will be released from military prison next week, according to Manning’s attorneys.
Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst, was sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013 for stealing 750,000 pages of documents and videos and leaking them to WikiLeaks. But in January, Barack Obama commuted Manning’s sentence, indicating Manning would be released May 17.
Manning had the gall to tweet:
Manning, of course, ignored the lives put at risk from the information leaked to Wikileaks;
Instead, Manning released a written statement, saying:
For the first time, I can see a future for myself as Chelsea. I can imagine surviving and living as the person who I am and can finally be in the outside world. I hope to take the lessons that I have learned, the love that I have been given, and the hope that I have to work toward making life better for others. Freedom used to be something I dreamed of but never allowed myself to fully imagine. … I am forever grateful to the people who kept me alive, president Obama, my legal team, and countless supporters.
Manning’s attorneys chortled, “Chelsea has already served the longest sentence of any whistleblower in the history of this country. It has been far too long, too severe, too draconian. President Obama’s act of commutation was the first time the military took care of this soldier who risked so much to disclose information that served the public interest.”
Leftists rejoiced:
Lest we forget, in 2013, Army Brig. Gen. Robert A. Carr told Congress that as a result of the leaked documents, “In some cases, lives will be harmed.”
That apparently didn’t bother WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who refused to redact the names of Afghan informants mentioned in the documents; he told the Guardian, “If an Afghan civilian helps coalition forces, he deserves to die.”
As House Speaker Paul Ryan blasted after Obama commuted Manning’s sentence, “Chelsea Manning’s treachery put American lives at risk and exposed some of our nation’s most sensitive secrets. This is just outrageous. President Obama now leaves in place a dangerous precedent that those who compromise our national security won’t be held accountable for their crimes.”
