Six-term Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) received the Liberty Medal Monday night from former Vice President Joe Biden for his “lifetime of sacrifice and service.” In an overt slam on President Trump, McCain warned in his acceptance speech against “half-baked, spurious nationalism” and hinted that Trump’s policies are “unpatriotic.”
“To abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history,” said McCain.
McCain, who served 22 years in the United States Navy, was congratulated primarily by Democrats on social media; Republicans were noticeably absent in congratulating him.
However, McCain was praised by liberal members of the media posing as conservatives and Republicans:
Bret Stephens is the New York Times’ “conservative” op-ed columnist who recently called for the Second Amendment to be repealed:
Ana Navarro is a “Republican strategist” who works for CNN who takes every opportunity to blast Trump:
Jennifer Rubin is a “conservative blogger” for the Washington Post who hates Trump and loves establishment Republicans:
McCain has come under an intense amount of fire in recent months from the right for going back on his campaign pledges that got him re-elected in 2016, including ending the repeal of Obamacare twice — his sole mission now apparently blocking President Trump at every turn.
