James Bond Will Never Be A Woman, Producer Says

Barbara Broccoli, the longtime executive producer of James Bond films — and daughter of the franchise creator, Albert Broccoli — says that despite social justice warrior protests, 007 will never be a woman.

James Bond film #25 began filming this month, and the movie, due out in theaters next year, will be current James Bond, Daniel Craig’s, last turn as the British secret agent. As speculation rises about who will be the next to fill 007’s designer shoes, some critics have suggested its time that a woman be named to the role.

If you want a female secret agent to grace the big screen, Broccoli told the Guardian, get your own movie franchise.

“Bond is male. He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male. And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters,” Broccoli said.

Broccoli does say she’s open to the idea of a woman writing or directing a Bond movie in the future, though, particularly as a female executive producer, and Broccoli says she’s taken steps to ensure that Bond girls are less screen eye candy and more involved, capable characters — modern women.

“I’ve tried to do my part, and I think particularly with the Daniel films, they’ve become much more current in terms of the way women are viewed,” she said.

Few details have been released about the next Bond film — and even fewer about who is under consideration to be the next James Bond — but fan favorite Idris Elba will likely not be taking the role. Bond #25 will hit theaters February 14, 2019.
