The Islamic Republic of Iran has conducted yet another ballistic missile test in apparent violation of a United Nations Security Council resolution calling on Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.”
The resolution was passed as an addendum to the controversial “Nuclear Deal.”
According to Fox News, “The Khorramshahr medium-range ballistic missile flew 600 miles before exploding, in a failed test of a reentry vehicle, officials said. Iran defense minister Brigadier Gen. Hossein Dehqan said in September that Iran would start production of the missile.”
Sunday’s military exercise was the first ballistic missile test since President Trump took office. The Iranians conducted dozens of tests under former President Obama.
“We’re aware that Iran fired that missile,” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer stated at a briefing Monday. “We’re looking into the exact nature of it.”
The White House didn’t provide any additional details.
It’s unclear how President Trump will respond to Iran’s provocations, but during the campaign trial he suggested that the United States has not put its strong foot forward under the Obama administration.
Decrying Obama’s feckless decision to let Iran off with a warning after IRGC thugs kidnapped 10 US sailors, Trump promised an aggressive policy against Iran, one that would punish the Islamic Republic for any act meant to humiliate America.
However, Trump has sent mixed messages about his commitment to tearing up the Iran Nuclear Deal. On the campaign trail, he boasted about his intent to negotiate a better deal on the first day of his presidency. Since taking office though, the Trump administration has suggested that it would work with Gulf States to aggressively enact provisions of the deal.
