After 12 years together, movie stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie split up in September, but not before getting “magical” tattoos months earlier to “symbolically bind” Jolie to her then-husband.
Back in February 2016, Brad and Angelina had an ex-Buddhist monk apply Thai Yantra tattoos, which were traditionally given to warriors before battle with the purpose of bringing luck, strength, healing, and protection against evil.
As HuffPo reports:
The two reportedly visited Ajan Noo Kanpai, a world renowned tattoo artist in Thailand, to get tattooed using the same ink in February 2016. Kanpai is famous for his Thai Yantra tattoos ― hand-etched designs meant to offer the owner blessings and protection. Jolie has previously visited the studio two times before, most recently receiving a a large tiger tattoo on her back in 2004.
According to the tattoo artist’s website, Jolie got three new tattoos on her back, while Pitt chose to have a Buddhist symbol inked on the left side of his stomach. Kanpai also noted that he used the same ink for both of their tattoos, so that they are “symbolically bound as husband and wife.”
TMZ caught up with Jolie’s ex-husband, Slingblade star Billy Bob Thornton, who said she should do something creative with the tattoo now that she’s single, suggesting possibly turning it into a flag of some of sort:
According to The Sun, Jolie’s many other tattoo’s include an Arabic script meaning “Determination, the Roman numeral “V MCMXL” commemorating Churchill’s speech where he said “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat,” and a Buddhist Pali incantation written in Khmer script on her back which reads:
May your enemies run far away from you.
If you acquire riches, may they remain yours always.
Your beauty will be that of Apsara.
