Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was brutally mocked online on Tuesday after her “Green New Deal” failed to garner a single vote of support in the U.S. Senate, which led to the 29-year-old former bartender accusing people of not taking their jobs seriously.
Ocasio-Cortez’s proposal had 57 votes against it — with several Democrats even voting against it — while the remaining 43 Democrat Senators voted “present” because they did not want to go on record for having supported the extremist proposal, which is estimated to cost $93 trillion.
Following the disastrous vote for Ocasio-Cortez, the young socialist took to Twitter to try to save face, declaring that she told her Democratic colleagues to not vote for the proposal.
“Because I encouraged them to vote present, along w/ others,” Ocasio-Cortez responded to Republican Senator John Barrasso, who asked why no Democrats voted for the proposal. “McConnell tried to rush the #GreenNewDeal straight to the floor without a hearing. The real question we should be asking: Why does the Senate GOP refuse to hold any major hearings on climate change?”
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) mocked Ocasio-Cortez’s plan, which Democratic presidential candidates are now saying sets the U.S. up for “failure,” during a speech on the Senate floor which drew condemnation from Ocasio-Cortez.
“Like many other women + working people, I occasionally suffer from impostor syndrome: those small moments, especially on hard days, where you wonder if the haters are right,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “But then they do things like this to clear it right up. If this guy can be Senator, you can do anything.”
Ocasio-Cortez then accused Lee of not taking his job seriously, tweeting: “W/ the #GreenNewDeal, legislators, experts, & advocates have spent countless hours poring over details of industrial policy+impact of global temp/sea lvl projections. That’s what you do when you take your job seriously + respect the chamber. This is what happens when you don’t.”
The official account of Mitch McConnell for Senate mocked Ocasio-Cortez, tweeting: “im not owned! im not owned!!”
McConnell tweeted out a video of Democrats who supported the Green New Deal before the vote and then highlighted how they voted on Tuesday.
“Hey @AOC your green new deal just got ZERO votes in the Senate,” Charlie Kirk tweeted. “Looks like socialism isn’t as popular as you make it seem.”
“Except that Mike Lee is literally—literally—seven hundred thousand times smarter and more competent than you, and that’s an understatement,” Allie Beth Stuckey tweeted, adding: “Please, by all means, sweet girl, engage him in a debate. Surely you wouldn’t hesitate to do so if he’s really as dumb as you say.”
“No, your first instinct was right,” Andrew Klavan tweeted. “You’re completely unqualified. Go with that.”
“Why don’t we judge their respective seriousness with a public debate between AOC and Mike Lee?” Mark Hemingway tweeted. “I’d pay good money to see that.”
“LOL…. ‘I encouraged’ Democrats to not vote for my bill. – AOC This is amazing to watch,” Jason Howerton tweeted.
“Does anyone really believe that US Senators care how a freshman rep tells them to vote?” David Harsanyi tweeted.
“I was reliably informed that the Green New Deal was both incredibly popular and deeply necessary to save the planet,” Ben Shapiro tweeted. “Yet not a single Democrat voted for it. Clearly they do not care about the children. We’re all dead in 12 years, guys.”
