House Republicans announced on Thursday that Hunter Biden will appear next month for a deposition, signaling an end to a standoff in the impeachment inquiry into his father, President Joe Biden, for the first son’s testimony.

Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) shared the news in a brief statement that included interview plans for other witnesses.

“Hunter Biden will appear before our committees for a deposition on February 28, 2024. His deposition will come after several interviews with Biden family members and associates. We look forward to Hunter Biden’s testimony,” they said.

The announcement followed Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, writing to the chairmen last week after the oversight and judiciary panels approved resolutions to hold his client in contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas issued in November.

Lowell said Hunter Biden would appear for a deposition or hearing in compliance with a “proper subpoena” since the House voted to formally authorize the impeachment inquiry last month.

Though they argued their prior subpoenas were valid, Comer and Jordan said over the weekend they would be willing to accommodate Hunter Biden by agreeing to subpoena him again. A congressional source told The Daily Wire on Thursday that new subpoenas have not yet been issued to Hunter Biden, but will be sent out soon.

The Daily Wire reached out to Lowell seeking comment.

Hunter Biden showed up on Capitol Hill twice in recent weeks — once on the day of his previously scheduled deposition in December and a second time this month as lawmakers considered the contempt resolutions, demanding he be allowed to appear in an open setting such as a public hearing to answer “legitimate” questions while depriving members the opportunity to distort his testimony.

House Republicans indicated they were willing to have Hunter Biden testify in a public hearing — but only after a deposition — and have insisted throughout the standoff that their subpoenas were valid. Democrats encouraged the GOP to accept Hunter Biden’s offer for public testimony and back off their endeavor to hold the first son in contempt of Congress.

Although GOP leadership indicated a floor vote on contempt would take place this week, none was scheduled as talks progressed between Congress and Hunter Biden’s legal team.

As part of a corruption-focused impeachment probe into President Biden, congressional investigators are looking into the business dealings of the Biden family and how the Department of Justice has handled its criminal investigation into Hunter Biden. A flurry of subpoenas have been issued over the past several months. Hollywood lawyer Kevin Morris participated in a transcribed interview on Thursday and Hunter Biden’s art gallery dealer Georges Bergès did last week.

Comer and Jordan said on Thursday their committees will conduct more transcribed interviews with several Biden family members and associates in the coming weeks and noted they are still working with an attorney for James Biden, President Biden’s brother, to schedule his appearance.

The chairmen shared interview plans for some Biden family associates — the week of January 22 for Mervyn Yan and Rob Walker, the week of January 29 for Eric Schwerin and Joey Langston, and the week of February 5 for Tony Bobulinski — and noted additional witnesses will be announced in the future.
