The top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), announced on Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment.

Grijalva, who is 76, said in a statement that he sought medical treatment a few weeks ago for a “persistent cough which was initially diagnosed as pneumonia” that further testing and imaging revealed to be cancer.

“This diagnosis has been difficult to process, but I am confident in the vigorous course of treatment that my medical team has developed, and I’ve begun my journey to fight this cancer,” he said.

Grijalva did not disclose what kind of cancer he is dealing with but did state that his office remains open so that services will continue to be provided to his constituents.

“I am in regular communication with my staff and I continue to work as I undergo treatment. It is a privilege to serve as a Representative for the people of Arizona and I take this responsibility very seriously,” the congressman added.

The announcement comes as the party split in the GOP-led House has become extremely slim. Members of both parties have retired early or, in the case of Rep. George Santos (R-NY), been expelled and replaced by a Democrat.

Well-wishers responded to news of Grijalva’s diagnosis on social media.

“My thoughts & prayers are with [Grijalva] and his family during this difficult time,” Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), who is running for Senate, said in a post to X.

“As a fighter for AZ and the natural wonders of our state, Raul is an inspiration to me and so many,” Gallego continued. “I wish him the best in this cancer fight and hope to be working with him again soon.”

Grijalva, a former leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said he is “grateful to my family, friends and doctors for their support, and I am working hard to get healthy and return to business as usual as soon as I am able.”

He added, “I appreciate your consideration, well wishes and respect for my family’s privacy during this time. My heart goes out to others struggling with cancer, and I wish everyone strength in their fight.”

Other House members who have battled cancer in recent years include Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA).
