Police found cans of compressed air and pills in the room with Aaron Carter, 34, when he was found dead in his bathtub over the weekend.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the singer to drown, but police reportedly told entertainment outlet TMZ that several cans of compressed air and prescription drugs were recovered from Carter’s bathroom and bedroom.
According to TMZ, the bathtub’s jets were still running when Carter’s body was discovered by his housekeeper — who said that she had gone to check on him Saturday morning to see if he wanted coffee and opened the door when she heard his dog in the room “going crazy.”
Police said that he may have been dead for some time before he was discovered, noting that the water in the tub had taken on a strange color and the smell of decomposition was already in the air.
The last time anyone saw Carter alive was Friday morning, around 2 a.m., when police came by the house to do a welfare check — Carter reportedly told the police to go away and then instructed his housekeeper to leave him alone — which she did until Saturday morning.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has said that they will not release the singer’s official cause of death until a full toxicology report has been completed.
Carter had struggled with both addiction and mental health issues for some time prior to his death, and discussed how he was staying “California sober” — meaning that he abstained from all drugs except for cannabis — in a podcast recorded just a few days before he died.
On the November 2 episode of “No Jumper,” Carter told host Adam John Grandmaison (Adam22) that he was five years sober and only taking drugs that were legally prescribed. He added that, because it was legal in California, he did not consider marijuana to be a drug.
“I don’t smoke that much weed. I really believe in the Cali sober method. It helped me. So I actually just hit five years clean,” he said, adding, “I take my medicine legally. I take Xanax. I take everything legally.”
