A “Harry Potter” TV series is one step closer to getting the greenlight, according to recent reports.

Warner Bros. is reportedly in talks with creator J.K. Rowling and it’s looking likely that her best-selling children’s books will be adapted into a series for the media company. The “Harry Potter” author is rumored to be a future producer on the TV series.

There have been years of speculation about the proposed show following the massive success of the film franchise and spinoffs, which raked in upwards of $9.1 billion in revenue.

Per Deadline, HBO Max and then-parent company WarnerMedia started discussing a potential “Harry Potter” TV series years ago and appointed Kids, Young Adult and Classics president Tom Ascheim to manage the franchises. This included theme parks, tours, and the “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” properties.

Ascheim left the company following the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery. But the “Harry Potter” TV series remained a point of interest and is now close to reaching a deal, the publication noted.

Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav has mentioned “Harry Potter” as a focus multiple times and said all along that Rowling would be involved even as she deals with ongoing controversy over her stance on transgender issues.

Zaslav has been focused on developing existing franchises, such as DC’s “Superman,” “Batman,” “Aquaman” movies, “Lord of the Rings,” “Game of Thrones” and “Sex and the City,” in addition to “Harry Potter,” rather than focusing on original content.

“We’re going to have a real focus on franchises,” Zaslav said in November 2022, per Yahoo. “We haven’t had a ‘Superman’ movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a ‘Harry Potter’ movie in 15 years. The DC movies and the ‘Harry Potter’ movies provided a lot of the profits for Warner Bros. Motion Pictures over the last 25 years. …What are the movies that have brands that are understood and loved everywhere in the world?”

This move stands in stark contrast to the recently released “Hogwart’s Legacy” video game, which inspired outrage from the pro-trans mob despite the creator’s attempts to distance themselves from the “Harry Potter” author. Despite backlash and calls for boycotts, the game raked in over $850 million in just two weeks.

Rowling became an enemy of transgender activists starting in 2019 when she tweeted her support for Maya Forstater, who lost her job for asserting that biological sex is real. Over the years she’s been openly critical of radical transgender activism.

The billionaire author has been labeled a “TERF,” which stands for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist.”
