As the debate between trans activists and more mainstream Americans rages on, HBO reps have released a statement on the network&#8217;s decision to keep “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/harry-potter">Harry Potter</a>” author <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/j-k-rowling">J.K. Rowling</a> involved in upcoming projects despite her being labeled a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) by the Left.
The British-born author holds mostly liberal views but draws the line at affirming trans-identifying men as women, a position that has inspired a heap of backlash and boycotts over the past several years. Still, Rowling has stood firm and repeatedly reiterated her stance.
Leftist “Harry Potter” fans and several stars from the film franchise have denounced Rowling for her beliefs. However, HBO issued a statement to <a href="https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/harry-potter-hbo-series-jk-rowling-transphobia-1236215642/">Variety</a> calling her contribution to the network, which spans more than 20 years, &#8220;invaluable&#8221; and reinforced its commitment to collaborate with her as it moves forward to adapt Rowling’s book series into a TV show.
“We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance,” the statement said. “J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”
HBO chief Casey Bloys had a similar take during a press event on November 12, Variety noted, saying that Rowling was “very, very involved in the process selecting the writer and the director” and that her stance on transgender issues “haven’t affected the casting or hiring of writers or productions staff” for the “Harry Potter” series, which is slated to be released on HBO in 2026.
The campaign to denounce Rowling <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maybe-everyone-doesnt-hate-j-k-rowling-after-all">began in 2020</a> when the author tweeted, “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”

She’s been outspoken about her beliefs ever since, frequently posting about the topic, including the controversy over trans-identifying men competing in women’s sports. 
Rowling recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/j-k-rowling-blasts-john-oliver-for-claiming-trans-athletes-are-no-threat-to-female-competitors">reacted</a> to late-night host John Oliver’s remarks on the topic, writing in an X post, “With a straight face, the ‘believe the science’ guys will say ‘actually, we don’t yet have enough data to say whether men and boys are stronger and faster than women and girls’. The ‘be kind’ crew can’t see what the issue is. ‘Why are you bothered, it only affects a tiny minority of females?&#8217;”
She added, “If you want to tell the world you’re happy to watch females suffer injury, humiliation and the loss of sporting opportunities to bolster an elitist post-modern ideology embraced by a minute fraction of the world’s population, fair enough; you’re allowed your opinion. But if you’ve just told girls they don’t deserve fair sport, maybe rethink using all too real and common sexual predation against young women as a punchline for your ‘edgy’ closing joke.”

The protest was aimed at Scotland&#8217;s <a href="https://www.parliament.scot/-/media/files/legislation/bills/s6-bills/gender-recognition-reform-scotland-bill/introduced/bill-as-introduced.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gender Recognition Act</a>, which would make it easier for citizens to legally change gender identity, largely on the basis of self-identification, provided they had &#8220;lived with the acquired gender&#8221; for at least three months and promised that the change was to be permanent.
The new law eliminated two key previous requirement for a legal change of gender, reducing the legal age to apply to 16 and removing a requirement of an official diagnosis of &#8220;gender dysphoria&#8221; from a doctor.
The GRA passed Scottish Parliament in December of 2022, but the U.K. blocked the law from Royal Assent by invoking <a href="https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/section-35-scotland-gender-recognition-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Section 35 of the Scotland Act</a> — which allows the United Kingdom to intervene in Scotland&#8217;s legislative process — for the first time in history.

Moutot also spoke about the book during a recent appearance on GB News, where she said that even though she viewed herself as a feminist &#8220;from the Left,&#8221; the moment she had begun to question the gender identity orthodoxy, no one on the Left would talk to her or even consider publishing her book.
Things had not gotten any better since it was published, she explained, as multiple stores had refused to sell it right from the start and transgender activists were still calling for the ones who did stock it to get rid of it.
The reactions to the book, Moutot said, were &#8220;really good on the right-wing and really bad on the rest of the spectrum.&#8221;

Author <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jk-rowling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">J.K. Rowling</a> exposed the radical transgender activist playbook in a recent post to X, highlighting the response she&#8217;d gotten from a critic and explaining that she&#8217;d never seen the position articulated &#8220;so honestly.&#8221;
The conversation began with a question posed to Rowling, asking her how she defined &#8220;woman&#8221; and whether it just came down to having female &#8220;equipment&#8221; or if she believed one must make use of said equipment in order to truly be a woman.
The &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; author responded with a lengthy post, saying in part that she believed that women — in addition to their biological realities — were defined by a set of lived experiences that no trans-identifying male could ever have.

She went on to say that women could not be put in boxes, adding, &#8220;Women are provably subject to certain experiences because of our female bodies, including different forms of oppression, depending on the cultures in which we live. When trans activists say &#8216;I thought you didn&#8217;t want to be defined by your biology,&#8217; it’s a feeble and transparent attempt at linguistic sleight of hand. Women don&#8217;t want to be limited, exploited, punished, or subject to other unjust treatment because of their biology, but our being female is indeed defined by our biology.&#8221;
Rowling followed addressed several other topics — including her opinions on gender dysphoria and medical treatments aimed at aiding those suffering from gender dysphoria to &#8220;transition&#8221; to the opposite sex — and her continued passion for protecting women&#8217;s spaces, particularly for those who had been victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence.

&#8220;That&#8217;s a whole lotta words and quite frankly I&#8217;m not f***ing reading all that. I just wanted to say that it&#8217;s weirder to do all the instead of just believing that trans women are women. Seriously, at this point which sounds more insane to the average person?&#8221;

Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf is a vocal proponent of his nation&#8217;s new hate crime law — which has placed &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; author <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jk-rowling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">J.K. Rowling</a> in the crosshairs — but that didn&#8217;t stop citizens from using its provisions to report him for hate speech.
According to the BBC, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-68721208" target="_blank" rel="noopener">thousands of complaints</a> had been made under the new law&#8217;s provisions — namely one aimed to stop people from &#8220;stirring up hatred&#8221; based on certain protected classes — within hours of it taking effect. The news outlet also reported that a large number of the complaints were against Yousaf himself, mostly relating to a 2020 speech he gave while serving as Justice Secretary.
In that speech, Yousaf complained about the number of white leaders across the nation of Scotland and advocated for more diversity in leadership roles — but he did so in a fashion that was widely criticized as &#8220;racist&#8221; and &#8220;anti-white.&#8221;

Scottish police responded to the large number of complaints, telling the BBC that they had already looked into Yousaf&#8217;s comments back in 2020 and had determined that there was nothing criminal about what he said. They also confirmed that the new law would not be implemented retroactively.
Community Safety Siobhian Brown weighed in on the complaints that overwhelmed police in the early hours of the law&#8217;s implementation, worrying that a good portion of them could be classified as &#8220;fake and vexatious.&#8221;
Brown blamed &#8220;misinformation&#8221; for the influx, but said that police were equipped to deal with the situation. She went on to reassure the public that there would be a high standard set for what would actually be considered criminal: &#8220;We&#8217;ve been very clear within the act this is not about restricting freedom of expression, it is to protect.&#8221;

According to Brown, the statement must &#8220;be threatening or abusive with the intent to a stir up hatred towards an individual&#8221; to the point that it causes the person to fear for his or her safety.
A number of complaints were also directed at Rowling, who openly criticized the law and said that she would not comply if told she must refer to trans-identifying men as &#8220;women.&#8221;
She doubled down on April 1, even as the law went into effect, and laid out a series of posts labeling trans-identifying men as men — prompting a public complaint from Yousaf calling her words &#8220;offensive and upsetting.&#8221;
Rowling fired right back via X, saying, &#8220;Most of Scotland is upset and offended by Yousaf&#8217;s bumbling incompetence and illiberal authoritarianism, but we aren&#8217;t lobbying to have him locked up for it.&#8221;

Just one day after Scotland&#8217;s new Hate Crime Act took effect, police announced that they would not pursue criminal charges against &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; author <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jk-rowling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">J.K. Rowling</a> under its provisions.
The law creates a new crime of &#8220;stirring up hatred,&#8221; particularly with regard to certain protected classes and designations — and there were many who believed Rowling might come under scrutiny for X posts standing up for biological women&#8217;s spaces and refusing to refer to trans-identifying men as &#8220;women.&#8221;
&#8220;The force said complaints had been received but no action would be taken,&#8221; the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-68712471" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC reported</a> with regard to Rowling and the new law.
The author responded to the news via X, saying, &#8220;I hope every woman in Scotland who wishes to speak up for the reality and importance of biological sex will be reassured by this announcement, and I trust that all women — irrespective of profile or financial means — will be treated equally under the law.&#8221;

Rowling rounded out the conversation by laying out her assessment of the situation, again threatening to get attorneys involved if there was no forthcoming apology and retraction.

J.K. Rowling Goes To War Over Article Spreading Lies About Her Daughter

&#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/harry-potter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harry Potter</a>&#8221; actor Gary Oldman revealed in a recent interview that he was not terribly impressed with his own performance in the popular film series, calling his acting &#8220;mediocre&#8221; and suggesting that he might have been better prepared for the role if he &#8220;had read the books&#8221; like some of his colleagues.
Oldman — who portrayed Harry&#8217;s godfather Sirius Black through several of the films — spoke with host Josh Horowitz on the &#8220;Happy Sad Confused&#8221; podcast, where he downplayed his own performance, but had nothing but the highest praise for the late actor Alan Rickman, who played the role of Severus Snape.
&#8220;I think my work is mediocre in it,&#8221; Oldman said of the series as a whole, but said that he might feel differently — or he might have approached his character differently — if he had taken the same steps to prepare that Rickman had going into the project.
&#8220;Maybe if I had read the books like Alan, if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently,&#8221; Oldman said, also noting that Rickman had spent time with series creator JK Rowling discussing Snape&#8217;s future, possibly giving him a better grasp of his character&#8217;s individual story arc.
Oldman did offer one caveat, adding that he was often critical of his own work — and probably would have judged himself just as harshly even if he had felt better prepared for the role.
&#8220;I’ll tell you what it is, it&#8217;s like anything. I think if I sat and watched myself in something and said, ‘My God, I’m amazing,’ that would be a very sad day, because you want to make the next thing better,&#8221; he explained.

Oldman also admitted, during a recent appearance on &#8220;The Drew Barrymore Show,&#8221; that the role in the &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; films had been a godsend — coming just after a divorce that left him a single father.
&#8220;At 42 years old, I woke up, you know, sort of divorced and I had custody of these boys,&#8221; he told Barrymore, explaining that, in a way, &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; and &#8220;The Dark Knight&#8221; had &#8220;saved me, because it meant that I could do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and then be home with the kids.&#8221;

Warner Bros. Discovery on Friday announced the release date for the highly-anticipated &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hbo-refuses-to-cave-to-woke-mob-backs-j-k-rowling-as-executive-producer-on-harry-potter-tv-series">Harry Potter</a>&#8220; TV series.
During the company&#8217;s fourth-quarter earnings call, the Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav said they are looking at the series debuting in 2026, according to <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/harry-potter-tv-series-2026-debut-hbo-max-1235833774/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hollywood Reporter</a>.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,&#8221; Zaslav said while sharing the company&#8217;s franchise strategy. &#8220;The last film was made more than a dozen years ago.&#8221;
Zaslav also talked about meeting recently with famed &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; author <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jk-rowling">J.K. Rowling</a> and her team about the upcoming project.
&#8220;I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys] and Channing [WBD TV chief Channing Dungey] and we spent some real time with J.K. and her team,&#8221; Zaslav said.

Officials said the long-form series will be rolled out over a 10-year period and be faithful to the books.
&#8220;J.K. is an executive producer, and her insights will be helpful,&#8221; Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content said. &#8220;We are in the Harry Potter business.&#8221;
&#8220;The TV show is new and exciting, but we&#8217;ve been in the Harry Potter business for 20 years; this isn&#8217;t a new decision,&#8221; Bloys added. &#8220;We&#8217;re comfortable being in the Potter business.&#8221;
&#8220;J.K. is a very online conversation … It&#8217;s very nuanced and complicated and not something we&#8217;re going to get into,&#8221; the CEO continued. &#8220;Our priority is what&#8217;s onscreen. The Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive about love and acceptance, and that&#8217;s our priority, what&#8217;s on the screen.&#8221;
