Gwyneth Paltrow BLASTED For Selling ‘Harmful’ $135 At-Home Coffee Enema On Her Website ‘Goop’

First it was vagina steaming. Then it was “jade eggs” designed to strengthen women’s “pelvic floor.” And now, Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle and wellness website, Goop, is suggesting that the celebrity’s all-natural female followers “cleanse” and “detox” with their very own at-home enema kit.

Medical professionals are already slamming Paltrow’s bizarre choice to suggest her readers perform their own (very) personal detox using a $135 “coffee enema” kit sold by a company called “Implant O’Rama” (a name that, no doubt, inspires confidence in the scientifically literate).

The “enema kit,” which consists of a small green bottle, some sterile tubing, and a pressure bulb that pumps air into the rudimentary machine, works by “inserting a mixture of brewed coffee and water into the colon via the rectum,” the Independent reports.

Doctors took to social media this week to strongly advise against using Paltrow’s preferred method of “detoxing” her digestive system, reminding Paltrow’s fans that as long as your liver is working, your body is happily detoxing itself — there’s no need to shoot a stream of coffee-laced water into one’s own patoot.

“If you have a liver, your body is already getting rid of toxins,” one dietitian told CBS News. “You don’t need to do any cleanses.” Another suggested to the same media outlet that, if you’re truly worried about being backed up, the money could be better spent on foods that contain healthy amounts of fiber.

The Mayo Clinic also suggests that Ms. Paltrow is barking (or, rather, squirting liquid) up the wrong tree. Doctors there say that personal colon cleanses, and non-professionally administered enemas could cause everything from allergies, arthritis, cramping, bloating, nausea, and the aggravation of asthma, to permanent liver and intestinal tract damage.

“Proponents of colon cleansing believe that toxins from your gastrointestinal tract can cause a variety of health problems, such as arthritis, allergies and asthma,” the clinic states. “They believe that colon cleansing improves health by removing toxins, boosting your energy and enhancing your immune system. … However, there’s no evidence that colon cleansing produces these effects.”

Gwyenth apparently got the idea from a one Dr. Junger, who has become her own personal health guru of late. The only problem? Junger has some very strange — and potentially dangerous — ideas and is often the subject of scientific takedowns of wellness guru suggestions. The blog Science-Based Medicine once described Junger’s methods as “outright quackery.”
