Illegal immigrants in the UC system are about to get another break at the expense of legal immigrants, as University of California President Janet Napolitano announced the state would ante-up over $25 million over the next three years for “undocumented student support across its 10 campuses.”

Napolitano stated, “We are committed to continuing a path forward for undocumented students at the University of California. This funding will further strengthen the university’s undocumented student initiative, and help ensure that these students receive the support and resources they need to succeed.”

$8.4 million a year will be spent through the 2018-19 academic year for UC’s DREAM Loan Program: $5 million per year; student services staff coordinators and targeted undergraduate and graduate fellowships, in addition to funds for textbooks: $2.5 million per year, and UC’s Undocumented Legal Services Center: $900,000 per year.

UC Board of Regents Chairman Monica Lozano stated: “From the earliest days of her presidency, Janet Napolitano has acted to ensure that our undocumented students are on equal footing with others seeking to fulfill their aspirations at UC campuses. These efforts have made the University of California a leader among universities across the nation in ensuring academic opportunity for undocumented college students.”

UC media officer Claire Doan told NBC News, “These loans are very important to undocumented students. Their status disqualifies them from receiving financial aid, which severely limits their access to student loans. And they have difficulty accessing private loans.” Doan acknowledged roughly 3,000 students will be eligible for funds.

As Daily Wire writer Pardes Selah wrote for Campus Reform last July, “The UCLA Labor Center’s Dream Resource Center is allowing undocumented students to apply for Dream Summer, a ten-week summer program that provides paid internship opportunities for immigrants in California, regardless of their immigration or insurance status. The program will encourage them to advocate for immigration reform and promote universal health care access regardless of immigration status.”
