North Carolina Lt. Governor Mark Robinson sent a letter to President Joe Biden this week demanding answers about an illegal alien who was recently apprehended in the state who appeared on the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) terrorist watchlist.
The letter from Robinson, who is the Republican Party’s gubernatorial nominee for the upcoming elections this fall, sought information on 32-year-old Awet Hagos after he was arrested late last week for allegedly opening fire at a business where he worked.
Hagos was charged with three counts of assault on a government official, three counts of resisting a public officer, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon with more potential charges forthcoming.
Robinson sought answers to the following questions:
- Is Hagos on the U.S. government’s terrorist watch list?
- What are Hagos’ suspected ties to terrorist groups and/or activities?
- Is Hagos believed to be acting alone?
- Does Hagos have any known associates, friends, or family that you believe are also here?
- Does the Federal Government know how Hagos entered the country?
- By air, crossing the border or other means? What airports, trains, or highways do we know he traveled on?
- Where else did Hagos travel to, or through, in the state of North Carolina?
- When Hagos applied for and was denied American citizenship why was he not detained then?
- When Hagos applied for and was denied American citizenship, how and who locally was alerted to his whereabouts?
- Is the Federal Government aware of any other potential terrorist suspects in North Carolina – whether they have any ties to Hagos or not?
Police were called to a Quick Stop convenience store where they discovered Hagos discharging a firearm, according to The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald. The suspect allegedly attacked law enforcement and managed to fight off tasers that that sheriff’s deputies used on him.
As he fled to his residence — where he remained barricaded for hours — he allegedly tried to take a sheriff’s deputy’s rifle.
Robinson said that the state needed answers to his questions to ascertain what threats may exist to the state given multiple attacks that have been carried out against North Carolina’s infrastructure, including “a cyberattack on a natural gas pipeline, and just over a year ago we had multiple substations that were sabotaged.”

“Hagos was living just an hour from multiple military bases in both North Carolina and in Virginia,” Robinson added. “If this violent individual has terrorist ties, it is imperative that we know immediately what these are, whether he has any associates here with him, and if there is any imminent danger to the citizens of North Carolina.”
WAVY TV 10 reported that Hagos is from “an area of Africa near the Yemen border” and had previously lived in Haiti. Prior to coming to North Carolina, he lived in the sanctuary state of California.
He is being held on $100,000 bond in the Albemarle District Jail and ICE officials have lodged a detainer request against him, indicating that the suspect is in the U.S. illegally and ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) are waiting to deport him.
