Kelly Carlin, daughter of the late comedian George Carlin, said an artificial intelligence (AI) comedy special featuring her father’s likeness is nothing like the real thing.
The 60-year-old screenwriter was commenting on the release of an hour-long show called “George Carlin: I’m Glad I’m Dead.” The program aired on the YouTube channel Dudesy, which is run by Will Sasso and Chad Kultgen. It blends AI and comedy in a “first of its kind media experiment,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
The AI version of Carlin replicates his mannerisms and speech patterns to comment on current issues ranging from Elon Musk to the use of artificial intelligence, the publication noted. Kelly said the AI version doesn’t come close to replicating her famous father’s originality, however.
“My dad spent a lifetime perfecting his craft from his very human life, brain and imagination,” she wrote in a statement shared on X that has since gone viral. “No machine will ever replace his genius. These AI generated products are clever attempts at trying to recreate a mind that will never exist again. Let’s let the artist’s work speak for itself. Humans are so afraid of the void that we can’t let what has fallen into it stay there.”

Carlin, who died in 2008, is widely regarded as one of the most influential stand-up comedians ever. He was known for his reflections on everyday life on topics ranging from politics to psychology, religion, and other controversial subjects. One of his best-known bits focused on “seven dirty words.”
Besides his stand-up specials, Carlin appeared in multiple television projects, including “The Tonight Show,” “Saturday Night Live,” and his own “The George Carlin Show.”
He was also a film star with roles in “Car Wash” (1976), “Outrageous Fortune” (1987), “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989), “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” (1991), “The Prince of Tides” (1991), “Dogma” (1999), “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (2001), Scary Movie 3 (2003), and “Jersey Girl (2004).”
