On Monday, Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean, whose husband tragically lost both his parents to COVID-19, slammed CNN for a nine-minute interview with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in which they never asked him about the state’s prior policy on returning nursing home residents to their homes even if they had the virus.

Dean tweeted, “@CNN doesn’t ask @NYGovCuomo about nursing home deaths. Shame on @PoppyHarlowCNN and @jimsciutto. Bravo to @SRuhle on @MSNBC for being a journalist.”

She followed by tweeting, “How hard is it to ask the question about 6,000+ New York seniors that were sitting ducks thanks to @NYGov Cuomo’s order to contaminate nursing homes with Covid positive patients? What if it was 6,000 kids? Would that make a difference? It shouldn’t. Do your job @CNN.”

Dean continued, “Actually I amend this tweet. I don’t think @NYGovCuomo has EVER been asked the nursing home death question on @CNN. So Jim and Poppy would’ve broken new ground over there had they asked it.”

Sciutto replied weakly, “We pressed him on: -NYers flouting health restrictions during reopening -Why NY waited six years after Eric Garner to ban chokeholds -Potential barriers to mail-in voting during 2nd wave. As journalists, we press officials of both parties every day,” adding snidely, “Thank you for watching.”

Dean fired back, “You had 9 minutes to ask him a very important question. A question @NYGov Cuomo rarely gets asked on your channel. 6,000+ deaths. An order that was scrubbed off the government website. Don’t you think our families deserve answers? Nice try though. Good use of dashes.”

In mid-May, Dean targeted the mainstream media for its non-coverage of Cuomo’s nursing home policy, saying it should be “one of the biggest” stories of the year. She asserted, “I have not seen the coverage of this … Twenty percent of our lost loved ones are from nursing homes … because Governor Cuomo and several other governors forced COVID-recovering patients into nursing homes.”

Dean ripped CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, Andrew Cuomo’s brother for an interview in which he never brought up the issue, instead trying to be funny by using a giant cotton swab to make fun of this brother’s nose. Dean said, “The fact that I am seeing, last night, him … making fun … inappropriate jokes and insensitive jokes, cruel jokes … make no mistake. I am glad that Chris Cuomo has recovered from COVID because he apparently did have it. And I’m glad that their family is well, but my family is not well. And that is not something to joke about.”

As Fox News noted, over 6,200 elderly residents may have died from COVID-19 in New York nursing homes, according to state health department statistics. On March 25, the New York Department of Health issued an advisory that stated nursing homes had to accept residents returning from hospitals whether or not they had a diagnosis of COVID-19. The advisory stated:

During this global health emergency, all NHs must comply with the expedited receipt of residents returning from hospitals to NHs. Residents are deemed appropriate for return to a NH upon a determination by the hospital physician or designee that the resident is medically stable for return.  Hospital discharge planners must confirm to the NH, by telephone, that the resident is medically stable for discharge. Comprehensive discharge instructions must be provided by the hospital prior to the transport of a resident to the NH.

No resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the NH solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19. NHs are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.
