Former NFL player Sergio Brown was taken into custody this week after police issued a warrant for first-degree murder in connection with the death of his mother.
NBC News reported that the 35-year-old former defensive back was taken into custody by law enforcement officials on Tuesday in San Diego and was awaiting to be extradited to Illinois to face charges related to the death of his 73-year-old mother, Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown.
Brown was found dead in a creek behind her Chicago home back in mid-September from what officials said were injuries sustained from an assault.
Brown was captured by law enforcement after Mexico deported him back to the U.S. after authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest.
CNN said that his deportation from Mexico “was not without incident” as he allegedly “created a disturbance on an extradition flight from Mexico City to Tijuana and was threatened with removal by the plane’s captain.”
Brown’s brother, Nick Brown, posted on social media the day after learning of his mother’s death: “My brother Sergio is still missing. If anyone knows where he is I want him to know that I love you and please come home.”
“It’s a sad but hopeful time, and we will all get through this together,” he added. “Mom always told me, ‘tough times don’t last,’ and our last conversation about tough times being temporary is my beacon of hope. Mom, thank you for being strong, caring, diligent, fancy, funny, and for saving my art. I won’t let you down.”
The family issued a statement last week asking for law enforcement to make an arrest, saying that there was sufficient evidence to do so.

“We implore law enforcement agencies, particularly the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, to work diligently and thoroughly in pursuit of truth and accountability for Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown. No family should bear the weight of uncertainty regarding the circumstances of their loved one’s passing,” the family said through their attorney.
They added that they had not spoken to Sergio, but were praying for his well-being and his immediate return to the U.S.
