An elderly resident of a luxury Toronto-area condo building went door-to-door, gunning down members of the complex’s board Sunday night before police moved in and took him down, authorities said.

The unidentified 73-year-old man shot and killed five people believed to be board members of the Bellaria Towers in suburban Vaughan during a rampage that began around 7:30 p.m. When police arrived, the man confronted them and was shot dead.

“There is no further threat to the community at this point,” York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween said late Sunday. “We offer our sincere condolences to the victims and their families.”

One other person was shot by the gunman, but survived and is expected to recover, authorities said. MacSween did not identify a motive or confirm if the gunman was a building resident. The victims were not identified pending notification of their loved ones.

The crime scene was the “most terrible call I’ve seen in my entire career,” Constable Laura Nicolle told CNN. She said all of the dead were killed in separate apartments. Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit was assisting local authorities in the investigation.

Vaughan is located 20 miles north of Toronto.

One resident described the neighborhood as quiet and safe.

“We wouldn’t imagine seeing that in our buildings, right, but nowadays you see everything,” the man told CityNews.

Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca tweeted about the incident early Monday.

“On behalf of the City of Vaughan and council, I offer my condolences to the families of the victims killed in the shootings that occurred in the area of Jane Street and Rutherford Road,” Del Luca wrote. “I want to recognize the brave first responders who are working to safeguard the situation.”

It was not disclosed what kind of gun the killer used, but the sale of handguns was banned by the Canadian government earlier this year. Mass shootings are rare in Canada, although in 2020, a 51-year-old denture salesman disguised as a police officer gunned down 22 people in Nova Scotia before being shot dead by police. In September, 11 people were killed and another 18 were stabbed in an indigenous community in Saskatchewan.
