President Donald Trump, dogged by allegations that his campaign team colluded with the Russian government — allegations that have yet to find any basis in fact — took the rare opportunity to lash out at a Democrat for her involvement with a foreign power, trolling Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) over claims she had a Chinese spy on her staff.
At a rally in Ohio Saturday night, The Washington Times reports, Trump called Feinstein the leader of the Russia investigation in Congress, and questioned her fitness to handle any inquiry into whether a foreign power was looking to weasel its way into American politics.
“The leader of the Russia investigation, Dianne Feinstein, had a Chinese spy as her driver for 20 years,” Trump told the rally. “And she’s leading the Russian ‘witch hunt.’ Isn’t that something? And then she says to me, ‘What did you know about this and that?’ Give me a break.”
Trump took the opportunity to lash out at governments spying in the United States, telling his audience that the Trump administration is working to root out spies in their midst.
“Not only China, it’s a lot of people,” Trump added. “And we’ve got to stop it. We’ve got to stop meddling, we’ve got to stop everybody from attacking us. But there are a lot. Russia’s there, China’s there. We’re doing well with North Korea, but they’re probably there [spying]. We’ve got to stop everybody. And I like Dianne Feinstein. But I don’t like the fact that she had a Chinese spy driving her, and she didn’t know it.”
Feinstein fired back on Sunday, saying on Twitter that she took the FBI’s concerns “seriously,” and fired the staffer immediately upon finding out they’d been compromised by the Chinese.
(1/2) The FBI told me 5 years ago it had concerns that China was seeking to recruit an administrative member of my Calif staff (despite no access to sensitive information). I took those concerns seriously, learned the facts and made sure the employee left my office immediately. pic.twitter.com/qpVyPanpJk

(2/2) Compare that to your actions: attacking the FBI and refusing the advice of your national security team. SAD! I appreciated then and now the diligent work of our law enforcement and intelligence agencies and acted in the best interests of the country. Give it a try!

Politico revealed late last week that one of Feinstein’s longtime staffers, who often served as her personal driver, was given money by the Chinese government to deliver information he discovered in the course of his employment to the Chinese consulate. When Feinstein found out, Fox News reports, she was “mortified,” and forced the staffer to resign, but the staffer had been funneling information, the FBI believes, for nearly two decades.
