Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) crossed party lines on Sunday to endorse former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, and a number on the Left have already made it clear that they are not okay.
“Abdul [El-Sayed] made very clear that I was not welcome in his campaign, that he didn’t need me there, that he didn’t want me there. … My vote for Senate is going to be with Mike Rogers,” Stevens said. “We have to stand with country, we can’t stand with hate, we can’t stand with Hasan Piker… I stood with my party and I was booed off the stage.”
Stevens has expressed disgust with El-Sayed’s close ties to America-hating communist streamer Hasan Piker and criticized a recent ad released by El-Sayed that features commentator Tucker Carlson.
“This is a despicable betrayal from Rep. Stevens,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said. “Senate Democrats are united in our support for Abdul El-Sayed, because we know he will fight for the economic interests of working families in Michigan, unlike Mike Rogers, who is a tool of Donald Trump and billionaire donors.”
Leftist Mehdi Hasan took to X after Stevens’ endorsement to call her a “traitor” to the party, claiming that anyone who’d supported her in the past should re-evaluate everything.

“She’s clearly a disturbed, deranged, dishonest woman (less than 48 hours ago she was swearing to the NYT she was backing Abdul) but the bigger question to ask is: how on earth did the Dem establishment put her forward as their candidate? A complete traitor to their party and now an enabler of Trump? There needs to be a lot of soul-searching among centrist former Stevens supporters. Schumer needs to say something for a start!” he claimed.
Members of Stevens’ own staff resigned en masse, and her former Chief of Staff Justin German released a statement on their behalf swearing loyalty to the Democrat nominee — Abdul El-Sayed — and saying that they were “heartbroken” by her decision.

The Michigan Democrat Party released joint statements from party Chair Curtis Hertel and First Vice Chair Portia Roberson, each of whom referred to Rogers as handpicked by President Donald Trump and therefore a threat to Democracy as a whole.
Michigan Democrats stand united and fully behind @AbdulElSayed. We reject the attempts by Haley Stevens and bad-faith actors to divide our party and undermine our momentum.

Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki suggested that Stevens’ fiancé — who announced days earlier that he was supporting Rogers — was influencing her decision to appear alongside Rogers.
MS NOW host Chris Hayes commented, “Before all this insanity, this race was a kind of natural experiment for the appeal of Bernie-style progressive politics in a contested swing state race. But now Stevens has turned herself into a kind of centrist Ralph Nader if El-Sayed loses.”
Neera Tanden, a former White House official under President Joe Biden, added, “Standing with Mike Rogers is a betrayal of everything Haley Stevens has fought for her entire career. It’s also a betrayal of all of her supporters that believed in her.”
MS NOW brought out Stacey Abrams — who famously insisted that she won the Georgia governor’s race despite receiving fewer votes than Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) — to talk about Stevens shortly after the announcement. Without a touch of irony, Abrams accused Stevens of acting out of “sore-loserness” and claimed that she’d “used black people as props.”
MS NOW continues their meltdown, carting out Stacey Abrams to stop the bleeding with El Sayed’s embattled campaign.
Abrams claims Stevens is using black people as a prop. Has she seen El Sayed’s pandering?! He now loves fried chicken and basketball. lol https://t.co/gb5tvK4yPM

El-Sayed himself, speaking shortly after Stevens endorsed his Republican opponent, made it clear that he wasn’t going to discuss it: “If you ask me questions about two folks not here right, I’m going to be less interested in answering.”
Lol Abdul El-Sayed demands that the media not ask him questions about Haley Stevens endorsing Mike Rogers:

Trump voiced support for Stevens, issuing a statement on her behalf from his Truth Social account.
“Wow, this is BIG! Congresswoman Haley Stevens, a Highly Respected Democrat, who narrowly lost in the Primary to Abdul Mohamed El-Sayed, and who has been breathlessly wined and dined by the Dumocrats to help in their Michigan Campaign for the United States Senate against Mike Rogers, has just ENDORSED Mike Rogers for Senate!” he said. “Her following is huge, and the level of respect from the People of Michigan, especially our African American and Jewish populations, is virtually unparalleled. Haley said what few people are willing to say. She showed great and almost unprecedented loyalty to the Great People of Michigan with what she did. It’s a thing called bravery, and few people have it like just displayed by Congresswoman Haley Stevens!”
