Democrat strategist James Carville said this week that the party’s numbers with young people, especially young men, are abysmal heading into the upcoming elections in November.
Carville made the remarks on his podcast “Carville’s Classroom” on Sunday while speaking about problems the Democrats are facing under President Joe Biden’s leadership.
“I’ve been very vocal about this,” Carville said. “It’s horrifying, our numbers among younger voters, particularly younger blacks and younger Latinos and whatever, younger people of color. Particularly males. We’re not shedding them, they’re leaving in droves.”
Recent polls have found that Democrats have seen a double-digit loss in support from black voters, Latino voters, and young voters compared to where they were in 2020.
Carville next took the time to explain what a winning message for those voters might be:
“If we don’t take time to understand their lives, they think all politics is just a bunch of bullsh*t, people arguing back and forth,” Carville said, noting that young voters care about interest rates, insurance costs, and the costs of owning a home.
Carville said that Democrats need to try to scare young voters into not voting for Trump, warning them “you are going to live with the consequences of this. This is your life.”
“And we have to explain that. We’re not going to convince under 35s that we can build a great country for you… I don’t think they’re going to buy that,” he said. “Try if you want to, but I don’t think we’re going to appeal to the better angels of their natures. Because of complicated economic forces, they don’t feel like their future is secure in the United States. And it may not be.”

“But if you don’t vote, and you get this… Supreme Court, you can — what did Trotsky say? ‘You can not care about the revolution, but the revolution cares about you,'” he continued. “You’re going to be dragged into this, and we need strong advocacy explaining to these youngsters what exactly they have at stake here.”
