Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) conceded over the weekend that the U.S. southern border is in a serious crisis under President Joe Biden, whom she refused to call the party’s best option for 2024.
Hassan made the remarks during a Sunday interview with Kristen Welker on NBC News’s “Meet The Press” while discussing New Hampshire’s presidential primary election this week.
When asked if Biden was “the strongest and best candidate to take on” the Republican nominee this fall, Hassan repeatedly declined to answer the question.
“Look, we will be talking about his record,” she said. “We have more work to do, to be sure. Things are too expensive, especially housing and healthcare.”
“I think President Biden has the strongest record to run on that we’ve seen in a very long time in this country,” she later added. “I think there is a lot of anxiety in this country about prices. That’s why we need to continue the work that we’ve done.”
Welker asked Hassan if she agreed with Biden’s admission last week that the U.S. southern border was not secure.
“The border is in crisis,” Hassan said. “I have long been saying we need to improve security. It’s not where it needs to be.”
Welker then asked, “Given that, should President Biden strike a deal with Republicans, even if it means giving up some of what Democrats want on issues of asylum and parole?”

“We have been urging our Republican colleagues now for the last couple of months, and before that for a long time, to come to the table and strike a bipartisan deal on the border and immigration,” Hassan said. “The Biden Administration, along with Senate Democrats and House Democrats back in the last Congress, actually increased our investment in border security. We need them to come to the table and compromise and get this done.”
