<p>A House Democrat who is the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress reportedly earned a leadership role with a suspected intelligence front for the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chinese-communist-party" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chinese Communist Party</a>.</p>
<p>The Forums for Peaceful Reunification of China named Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) &#8220;honorary chairwoman&#8221; during an August 2019 event in Monterey Park, California, according to a Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2023/02/06/ccp-judy-chu-united-front-taiwan-forums-for-peaceful-reunification-of-china/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">investigation published Monday</a>.</p>
<p>The report came out amid rising tensions between the United States and China after a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/an-explanation-for-why-trump-never-shot-down-chinese-spy-balloons-emerges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suspected Chinese surveillance balloon</a> flew over the United States last week. The DCNF says it translated multiple Chinese-language sources for the investigation and consulted experts who determined the group is a Chinese intelligence influence operation affiliated with the United Front Work Department (UFWD).</p>
<p>The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, <a href="https://www.uscc.gov/about-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">created by Congress in 2000</a>, has <a href="https://www.uscc.gov/sites/default/files/annual_reports/2016%20Annual%20Report%20to%20Congress.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">identified UFWD</a> as a department under the Chinese Communist Party that &#8220;reportedly participates in building foreign intelligence collection networks, particularly in Taiwan.&#8221; Among its &#8220;primary missions&#8221; are efforts to &#8220;liaison with foreign political parties,” “influence operations,” and “intelligence collection,” <a href="https://www.uscc.gov/sites/default/files/annual_reports/2009-Report-to-Congress.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a 2009 report from the commission</a>.</p>
<p>Taiwan is a self-governed island nation that the Chinese Communist Party has sought to bring under its control. The United States provides defense support to Taiwan, but does not formally recognize it as a country.</p>
<p>At the August 2019 event, Chu said she hoped for China and Taiwan &#8220;to become one family,&#8221; per a DCNF translation. Such a comment would align with the Forums for Peaceful Reunification of China&#8217;s opposition to Taiwanese independence.</p>
<p>In 2022, when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) prepared to make a visit to Taiwan in defiance of China, Chu said she &#8220;always supported Taiwan,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/01/politics/nancy-pelosi-taiwan-visit/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to CNN</a>. However, when pressed about what she thought about the trip, she demurred. &#8220;I leave it up to those who are going to make that decision.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Daily Wire reached out to Chu&#8217;s office for comment on the DCNF investigation.</p>
