National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) Director William Evanina <a href="https://www.dni.gov/index.php/newsroom/press-releases/item/2139-statement-by-ncsc-director-william-evanina-election-threat-update-for-the-american-public">said</a> in a statement last month the following about China as it pertains to foreign nations looking to interfere with U.S. elections this fall:
<blockquote>We assess that China prefers that President Trump – whom Beijing sees as unpredictable – does not win reelection. China has been expanding its influence efforts ahead of November 2020 to shape the policy environment in the United States, pressure political figures it views as opposed to China’s interests, and deflect and counter criticism of China. Although China will continue to weigh the risks and benefits of aggressive action, its public rhetoric over the past few months has grown increasingly critical of the current Administration’s COVID-19 response, closure of China’s Houston Consulate, and actions on other issues. For example, it has harshly criticized the Administration’s statements and actions on Hong Kong, TikTok, the legal status of the South China Sea, and China’s efforts to dominate the 5G market. Beijing recognizes that all of these efforts might affect the presidential race.</blockquote>
A week later, National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/national-security-adviser-china-trying-to-elect-biden-has-most-sophisticated-global-influence-programs-and-capabilities">warned</a> that China was &#8220;trying to elect Joe Biden&#8221; and that China had &#8221; the most sophisticated global influence programs and strategies and abilities and capabilities in the world.&#8221;
Barr <a href="http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/2009/02/sitroom.01.html">told</a> CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer that China was more aggressive and assertive than Russia in terms of trying to interfere in U.S. elections, according to U.S. intelligence.
The NCSC added the following about Russia and Iran, which were the top two other nations that were deemed to be a threat in the upcoming U.S. elections:

<li>RUSSIA – We assess that Russia is using a range of measures to primarily denigrate former Vice President Biden and what it sees as an anti-Russia “establishment.” This is consistent with Moscow’s public criticism of him when he was Vice President for his role in the Obama Administration’s policies on Ukraine and its support for the anti-Putin opposition inside Russia. For example, pro-Russia Ukrainian parliamentarian Andriy Derkach is spreading claims about corruption – including through publicizing leaked phone calls – to undermine former Vice President Biden’s candidacy and the Democratic Party. Some Kremlin-linked actors are also seeking to boost President Trump’s candidacy on social media and Russian television.</li>

<li>IRAN – We assess that Iran seeks to undermine U.S. democratic institutions, President Trump, and to divide the country in advance of the 2020 elections. Filmmaker Judd Apatow said in an interview this week that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has managed to force Hollywood to self-censor the content it creates by buying off the industry.
Apatow made the remarks during an interview with MSNBC&#8217;s Ari Melber while talking about how the industry censors content to avoid upsetting other nations.
“A lot of these giant corporate entities have business with countries around the world, Saudi Arabia or China, and they’re just not going to criticize them and they’re not going to let their shows criticize them or they’re not going to air documentaries that go deep into truthful areas because they make so much money,” Apatow <a href="https://deadline.com/video/judd-apatow-hollywood-censorship-international-china-saudi-arabia/">said</a>, noting that the censorship “completely shut(s) down critical content” about important issues.
“Instead of us doing business with China and that leading to China being more free, what has happened is that China has bought our silence with their money,” Apatow later added. “What is a result of that is that we never wake up our country or the world, through art or satire, that people are being mistreated in our country or other countries and that’s very dangerous.”
Americans got a taste for Chinese censorship last year when an NBA team manager was forced to delete a tweet that expressed support for Hong Kong protesters because it caused a major issue with China.
“The Houston Rockets suddenly find themselves in the middle of a geopolitical controversy that could put their chief front-office executive’s job in jeopardy,” The Ringer <a href="https://www.theringer.com/platform/amp/nba/2019/10/6/20901828/daryl-morey-hong-kong-china-houston-rockets-tweet-controversy">reported</a>. “After general manager Daryl Morey expressed support in a since-deleted tweet for pro-democracy efforts in Hong Kong, the Chinese government, the Chinese Basketball Association, and various Chinese businesses quickly denounced Morey and moved to sever ties with the Rockets. As a consequence, league sources told The Ringer that Rockets ownership has debated Morey’s employment status and whether to replace him.”
NBA chief communications officer Mike Bass released the following <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/backfire-nba-houston-rockets-cower-to-communist-china-get-blasted-online">statement</a> after the incident:

I was merely voicing one thought, based on one interpretation, of one complicated event. I have had a lot of opportunity since that tweet to hear and consider other perspectives. I have always appreciated the significant support our Chinese fans and sponsors have provided and I would hope that those who are upset will know that offending or misunderstanding them was not my intention. A Disney executive acknowledged the controversy surrounding the live-action “Mulan,” which was partly filmed in a region of China with internment camps for the ethnic minority Uyghur population, after critics also pointed out that Disney thanked various arms of the local communist government in its film credits.
Disney CFO Christine McCarthy made the remarks during a virtual conference in which she was asked if she believed the film&#8217;s success would be hindered in Chinese markets — where Disney reportedly wanted the film to thrive — because all of the different backlash toward the movie, reports <a href="https://deadline.com/2020/09/mulan-disney-cfo-christine-mccarthy-concedes-china-uproar-has-generated-a-lot-of-issues-for-us-1234574761/">Deadline</a>.
“I’m not a box-office prognosticator, but it has generated a lot of publicity,” McCarthy told the virtual conference. “Let me just put something into context. The real facts are that Mulan was primarily shot — almost in entirety — in New Zealand. In an effort to accurately depict some of the unique landscape and geography of the country of China for this period drama, we filmed scenery in 20 different locations in China. It’s common knowledge that, in order to film in China, you have to be granted permission. That permission comes from the central government.”
As The Daily Wire previously reported, Disney <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/backlash-against-disney-for-filming-mulan-in-chinese-province-with-concentration-camps">thanked several government entities</a> in the film’s credits, including the Turpan Municipal Bureau of Public Security, which reportedly helps maintain so-called “re-education” camps for minorities and has been sanctioned by the United States Department of Commerce for its role in doing so, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/disneys-mulan-faces-criticism-for-filming-in-chinas-xinjiang-region/2020/09/08/c45a80d2-f17d-11ea-8025-5d3489768ac8_story.html">The Washington Post</a>.
During the virtual conference, the Disney executive also said that the thank-you to the arms of the Chinese communist government is a typical practice for the movie industry, in which studios will “acknowledge in a film’s credits the national and local governments that allowed you to film there,” reports Deadline.
“So, in our credits, it recognized both China and locations in New Zealand. I would just leave it at that, but it has generated a lot of issues for us,” she continued.
According to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/12/business/media/disney-mulan-china.html">The New York Times</a>, Disney “worked overtime” to make the “Mulan” live-action movie work for a Chinese audience, which included sharing a movie script with the Chinese Communist Party in advance, using household names in the film to appeal to the Chinese market, and showing it to at least one Chinese test audience to find out what didn’t work so well (such as a kissing scene that was ultimately deleted). The Times reports that sharing scripts with Chinese officials is a &#8220;not-uncommon practice in Hollywood.&#8221;
Meanwhile, regarding Xinjiang, China, a steady stream of media reports and first-hand accounts have been detailing the lengths to which the Chinese communist government has been going in order to forcibly assimilate the ethnic Uyghur population. Some of these measures include forced sterilization, mandatory re-education in so-called “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/backlash-against-disney-for-filming-mulan-in-chinese-province-with-concentration-camps">re-education camps</a>,” widespread video surveillance, and promoting “repentance and confession.”
According to <a href="https://apnews.com/269b3de1af34e17c1941a514f78d764c">The Associated Press</a>, local government officials have made it practice to force families to pay fines for having too many children — and split them up and ship off family members to internment camps if they cannot comply. From 2017 to 2018, the birth rate in the Xinjiang region fell 24% while the nationwide birth-rate only declined 4%.
During an interview with the BBC earlier this year, Chinese Ambassador to the U.K., Liu Xiaoming, was confronted with drone footage that appeared to show <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-chinese-official-confronted-with-disturbing-detainment-footage-he-deflects-region-beautiful">blindfolded and shaven prisoners</a> kneeling in front of a train station in Xinjiang.
Liu deflected, saying that Xinjiang is regarded as a “beautiful place.” After being pressed, he refused to explain what was happening in the video.

&#8220;Look what he’s done with China. It’s a disgrace,&#8221; Biden claimed about President Donald Trump&#8217;s policy. &#8220;What he’s done, he’s allowed the corporate America to be able to make money by continuing to export American jobs. It’s not made in America. Make it in another pl—for example, those, those, those, those carry bags that the military is using, they are supposed to be made—they are being deployed, made in America. They are made in China. They are made in China. He doesn’t do anything about any of that.&#8221;
CNN anchor Jake Tapper then pressed Biden on some of the things that the former vice president has done on the issue.
&#8220;Let me ask you about China because in 2011 when you were vice president, you said, ‘It is in our self-interest that China continue to prosper,'&#8221; Tapper said. &#8220;A lot of people think that allowing China into the World Trade Organization, which you supported, extending most favored nation status to China, which you supported, that those steps allowed China to take advantage of the United States by using our own open trade deals against us.&#8221;
&#8220;Do you think in retrospect that you were naive about China?&#8221; Tapper asked.
&#8220;No, here’s the thing. In the context of that, we want China to grow,&#8221; Biden said. &#8220;We don’t want a war with China. I said to Xi Jinping when I was, I, you may remember the president wanted me to spend time with him as vice president, he was going to be president, and he couldn’t do it, so I traveled around the world with him. He asked, he said, &#8216;Why do you keep saying you’re a pacific power?&#8217; I said because we are. We are a pacific power and if we weren’t, you would not [have] been able to have any stability at all.&#8221;
&#8220;It’s in our interest that China be stable. It’s not in our interest for China to take advantage of us,&#8221; Biden continued. &#8220;So, what has Trump done? He&#8217;s poked his finger in the eye of all our friends and allies and he&#8217;s embraced every autocrat in the world and it&#8217;s now, we make up, we, we, we make up 15 percent of the world&#8217;s economy, 25 percent of the world&#8217;s economy, and we&#8217;ve lost all our friends.&#8221;

The Department of Justice announced on Monday that a former CIA officer, who is a naturalized citizen from Hong Kong, had been arrested for allegedly stealing Top Secret-level information and turning it over to the Chinese government.
The DOJ said that Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, 67, conspired with an unnamed relative, who also was a former CIA officer, to &#8220;communicate classified information up to the to intelligence officials of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).&#8221;
&#8220;According to court documents, Ma began working for the CIA in 1982, maintained a Top Secret clearance, and signed numerous non-disclosure agreements in which he acknowledged his responsibility and ongoing duty to protect U.S. government secrets during his tenure at CIA,&#8221; the DOJ said in a statement. &#8220;Ma left the CIA in 1989 and lived and worked in Shanghai, China before arriving in Hawaii in 2001.&#8221;
&#8220;According to court documents, Ma and his relative (identified as co-conspirator #1) conspired with each other and multiple PRC intelligence officials to communicate classified national defense information over the course of a decade,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;The scheme began with three days of meetings in Hong Kong in March 2001 during which the two former CIA officers provided information to the foreign intelligence service about the CIA’s personnel, operations, and methods of concealing communications.  Part of the meeting was captured on videotape, including a portion where Ma can be seen receiving and counting $50,000 in cash for the secrets they provided.&#8221;
Authorities say that after Ma moved to Hawaii he applied to work at the FBI in order to gain access to classified information that he again allegedly turned over to communist China.
&#8220;Over the following six years, Ma regularly copied, photographed and stole documents that displayed U.S. classification markings such as &#8216;SECRET,'&#8221; the DOJ said. &#8220;Ma took some of the stolen documents and images with him on his frequent trips to China with the intent to provide them to his handlers. Ma often returned from China with thousands of dollars in cash and expensive gifts, such as a new set of golf clubs.&#8221;
&#8220;According to court documents, in spring 2019, over the course of two in-person meetings, Ma confirmed his espionage activities to an FBI undercover employee Ma believed was a representative of the PRC intelligence service, and accepted $2,000 in cash from the FBI undercover as &#8216;small token&#8217; of appreciation for Ma’s assistance to China,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;Ma also offered to once again work for the PRC intelligence service.  On August 12, 2020, during a meeting with an FBI undercover employee before arrest, Ma again accepted money for his past espionage activities, expressed his willingness to continue to help the Chinese government, and stated that he wanted &#8216;the motherland&#8217; to succeed.&#8221;
Ma, if convicted, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers warned that Americans need to stay vigilant about China&#8217;s nefarious activities in the U.S.
“The trail of Chinese espionage is long and, sadly, strewn with former American intelligence officers who betrayed their colleagues, their country and its liberal democratic values to support an authoritarian communist regime,” Demers said.  “This betrayal is never worth it. Whether immediately, or many years after they thought they got away with it, we will find these traitors and we will bring them to justice. To the Chinese intelligence services, these individuals are expendable. To us, they are sad but urgent reminders of the need to stay vigilant.”
Alan E. Kohler Jr., Assistant Director of the FBI&#8217;s Counterintelligence Division, said that this case was &#8220;another example in a long string of illicit activities that the​People&#8217;s Republic of China is conducting within and against the United States.&#8221;

The video-sharing app TikTok reportedly plans to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration as early as Tuesday over the president’s executive order <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-signs-tiktok-executive-order-after-setting-sale-deadline">banning U.S. companies</a> from engaging in commerce with ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, starting next month.
NPR <a href="https://www.npr.org/2020/08/08/900394707/tiktok-to-sue-trump-administration-over-ban-as-soon-as-tuesday">reports</a> that the video-sharing app will challenge the Trump administration’s order because the company says it was not presented with an opportunity to respond, according to “a person who was directly involved in the forthcoming suit but was not authorized to speak for the company.”
The company, which has an office in Los Angeles, also believes the executive order violates their due process rights, as after the 45-day waiting period is over, they may not be able to retain legal representation without violating the order.
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning TikTok, which has been the subject of cybersecurity concerns, from operating in the United States unless the company can secure a buyer and address concerns about the app.
“TikTok automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users, including Internet and other network activity information such as location data and browsing and search histories,” read the president’s executive order.
“This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information — potentially allowing China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage,” the order continued.
TikTok has denied that it sends data to the Chinese government, and the anonymous source for NPR has also reportedly pushed back against the national security concerns that the Trump administration has with the video-sharing app.
&#8220;It&#8217;s based on pure speculation and conjecture,&#8221; the source told NPR. &#8220;The order has no findings of fact, just reiterates rhetoric about China that has been kicking around.”
Microsoft has acknowledged holding negotiations with TikTok over a potential acquisition, but even if the two companies do reach an agreement, it remains an open question whether the terms of the deal will be enough to convince skeptical lawmakers.
“It can’t just be data and servers housed in the United States,” Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) told <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/sen-tom-cotton-tiktok-must-cut-china-ties">Fox Business</a> on Monday of a potential TikTok deal. “There can be no code, there could be no algorithms, there can be no ties whatsoever between a new U.S.-based TikTok and ByteDance [or] China.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Sunday — the same day Microsoft acknowledged it was looking to acquire TikTok — he has urged that the video-sharing app be <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPpYItDxMqU">closed down</a> in the country. However, Schumer has since expressed support for an American company buying the app so &#8220;everyone can keep using it and your data is safe.&#8221;
“This is about privacy. With TikTok in China, it’s subject to Chinese Communist Party laws that may require handing over data to their government,” said Schumer. “A safe way must be found for TikTok to continue.”

Celebrities routinely make the trek to Capitol Hill, attracting shutter bugs along the way.
Everyone from Ben Affleck to <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/adam-carolla-aoc-insane/">Adam Carolla</a> drops by the nation’s capital to testify and, they hope, leverage their fame to help society. The results are mixed, of course, but their efforts generate plenty of headlines.
That wasn’t the case when a veteran movie star testified before a Senate committee June 30 on China-U.S. relations.
Richard Gere’s “virtual” appearance didn’t draw a crowd. Nor did entertainment reporters, who normally pounce on any politically outspoken star, deem what Gere said worthy of news coverage.
And he said plenty.
Gere has been a persistent China critic, using his celebrity cache on and off screen to support Tibet over the years. He said he’s <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/richard-gere-china-tibet-career/">been punished for that stance</a>, coaxing mainstream movie studios to <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000152/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">all but ignore him</a>. Unbowed, Gere continues to work in independent cinema – think movies like “Norman,” “The Dinner,” and “Three Christs,” routinely drawing strong reviews along the way.
And, at 70, Gere remains as dashing as ever.
Gere testified before the “Censorship as a Non-Tariff Barrier to Trade” hearing held by the Senate Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs, and Global Competitiveness.
Gere addressed the difficult ties between China and Tibet, noting “the Chinese government highly restricts access to Tibet for Americans—including journalists and politicians—like no other areas of China.”
He then turned his attention to <a href="https://savetibet.org/richard-gere-testifies-in-senate-about-chinese-censorship/">Hollywood’s subservient relationship to China</a>, which impacts more than just what we see on screens across the globe.
“There’s no doubt that the combination of Chinese censorship, coupled with American film studios’ desire to access China’s market, can lead to self-censorship and to avoiding social issues that great American films once addressed…”
“Imagine Marty Scorsese’s ‘Kundun,’ about the life of the Dalai Lama, or my own film ‘Red Corner,’ which is highly critical of the Chinese legal system. Imagine them being made today. It wouldn’t happen.”
Disney helped bring Scorsese’s 1997 film to the big screen. Later, Disney CEO Michael Eisner apologized to the Chinese government for the film, calling it a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/15/business/international/china-disney.html">“stupid mistake.”</a>
Gere then noted why Chinese film workers cannot afford to collaborate with him in any fashion.
One Chinese director “was in tears with me having to call me up and say that he couldn’t work with me,” Gere said, “that his career would be over, and his family could not travel. So this is personal to a lot of people.”
How did this reporter learn of Gere’s testimony? It’s buried in a <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hollywood-is-increasingly-normalizing-censorship-china-report-finds-1305935?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=THR%27s%20Today%20in%20Entertainment_2020-08-05%2007:10:00_aweprin&amp;utm_term=hollywoodreporter_tie">recent story</a> about PEN America similarly castigating Hollywood for genuflecting before Chinese censors.
On Aug. 5, PEN America published an explosive report that may put Hollywood on the defensive.
Titled “Made in Hollywood, Censored by Beijing,” the 94-page study details how the major studios and A-list directors increasingly are making decisions — including cast, plot, dialogue and settings — “based on an effort to avoid antagonizing Chinese officials.”
That report generated some media coverage, which is surprising given how entertainment journalists aren’t comfortable critiquing Hollywood from this perspective. That feeling intensified in recent months as the Trump administration ratcheted up the rhetoric against China due to its connection to the pandemic.
The Chinese government has been in the headlines, again, in recent weeks after <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/chinese-ambassador-to-uk-pressed-over-video">footage leaked</a> of “Uyghur prisoners being herded into trains.” It’s only one of several Chinese policies that are alarming human rights activists.
Gere remains focused on China, its treatment of Tibet, and how U.S.-based movie studios bend over backward to appease their censors. It’s a shame it took weeks for news consumers to get Gere’s comments in full.
The rest of Hollywood? Virtual silence. Even the most progressive, outspoken stars can’t spare a word critiquing China, its policies or conditions on the ground routinely compared to concentration camps.

Not to be outdone, the host of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” trotted out random information to suggest a president can’t do more than two things at once, a strawman of the first order.
<blockquote>Meyers: The death toll is climbing, wait times for tests are rising and tens of millions of Americans struggling to survive the worst economic crash since the Great Depression just lost a $600 unemployment benefit because Republicans couldn’t be bothered to extend it or, God forbid, make it permanent. And Trump couldn’t care less about any of that. Time is running out on his presidency and all he can hear is — TRUMP: “TikTok.”</blockquote>
Why would big, bad Trump want to cancel TikTok?
Fallon and Meyers won’t say, of course. They’d rather keep that information from you. So would much of the press.
A few media outlets have shared the alarming details. Here’s a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/enriquedans/2020/06/28/tiktok-beneath-its-fun-exterior-lies-a-sinisterpurpose/#3765a4803b79" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">warning from Forbes.com</a>, hardly a right-wing site, on the wildly popular platform.

… the US armed forces have forbidden personnel from using it and describes it as a threat to cybersecurity. Israeli cybersecurity company Check Point has investigated it and concludes it has backdoors and major vulnerabilities, as well as overall security issues. The US government is also investigating it. Meanwhile, Reddit CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman describes it as a “fundamentally parasitic app that is always listening” and warns against installing what he calls “spyware”. Several child advocacy groups say it poses a clear risk to children. Apple claims it has caught TikTok using clipboard capture mechanisms to spy on millions of users.

Odd that none of that information made it into the late night monologues, right?
Stephen Miller, a right-leaning journalist, <a href="https://spectator.us/media-tiktok-blindspot-national-security/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">shared more worrisome information</a> recently on the subject.
<blockquote>It’s understood to be hacking and using data collected from its users’ phones. Everyone from the Department of Defense, to the US military to the Joe Biden campaign has banned it. The app is now in talks to sell its US operations to Microsoft in order to abate the controversy, a move backed by Chuck Schumer which Trump says he ‘wouldn’t mind.’</blockquote>
Later, Miller spells out why the platform, which appears both creatively challenging and harmeless, is anything but for parents.
<blockquote>It took a random developer on Reddit to dig into exactly what TikTok does to a user’s phone. He reverse engineered the application and posted what he found saying ‘TikTok is a data collection service that is thinly-veiled as a social network. If there is an API to get information on you, your contacts or your device…well, they’re using it.’</blockquote>
Team Late Night went for the easy laugh, and for some in the audience it worked.
Those looking for reality, though, came away hungry for information.
Hope their kids choose their social media apps wisely.

Communist China locked down a village in the northern part of the country after an outbreak of the Bubonic plague led to the death of a resident. The news comes after China repeatedly lied to the world about the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in Wuhan and has killed hundreds of thousands of people around the world and devastated the global economy.
&#8220;Authorities in the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia have sealed off a village after a resident there died from bubonic plague, a centuries-old disease responsible for the most deadly pandemic in human history,&#8221; CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/07/asia/china-mongolia-bubonic-plague-death-intl-hnk-scli-scn/index.html">reported</a> Friday. &#8220;The death was reported to health authorities in Baotou city on Sunday and the victim was confirmed to be a bubonic plague patient on Thursday, the Baotou Municipal Health Commission said in a statement on its website.&#8221;
To stop the deadly disease from spreading, the Chinese government sealed off the entire Suji Xincun village and ordered that homes be disinfected on a daily basis. Dozens of people have reportedly been quarantined.
This is the second confirmed case of the bubonic plague in China this year. The other case was discovered last month in Bayannur, a city located northwest of Beijing, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/06/asia/china-mongolia-bubonic-plague-intl-hnk-scli-scn/index.html">reported</a> separately.
In Mongolia, which neighbor&#8217;s China, a teen died last month from the bubonic plague after coming in contact with an infected marmot.
&#8220;The Health Ministry said laboratory tests confirmed the teenager died of plague that he contracted from an infected marmot,&#8221; CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bubonic-plague-mongolia-teen-boy-dies-as-china-plague-case-recovers/">reported</a> last month. &#8220;The case prompted the government to impose a quarantine on a portion of the province of Gobi-Altai &#8230; 15 people who had contact with the boy were isolated.&#8221;
China continues to deal with the global fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, which it repeatedly tried to cover-up and downplay.
China <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pompeo-proven-right-china-admits-that-it-intentionally-destroyed-coronavirus-lab-samples">destroyed</a> the lab samples of the virus during the initial days of the outbreak, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/22/health/virus-corona.html">silenced</a> whistleblowers, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-china-censorship/report-says-china-internet-firms-censored-coronavirus-terms-criticism-early-in-outbreak-idUSKBN20Q1VS">censored</a> terms on the internet related to the outbreak, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-u-s-intelligence-tells-trump-that-china-intentionally-lied-about-coronavirus-outbreak-report-says">lied</a> about the extent of the outbreak in their country so they could <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-intel-report-suggests-china-intentionally-concealed-the-severity-of-pandemic-to-hoard-supplies">hoard medical supplies</a>, and lied about the origin of the outbreak, <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/chinese-state-media-falsely-claim-u-s-army-athlete-brought-coronavirus-to-china/">falsely claiming</a> that the U.S. military brought the coronavirus to Wuhan.
Top Chinese officials also <a href="https://apnews.com/68a9e1b91de4ffc166acd6012d82c2f9">knew</a> that the pandemic was very serious and that the coronavirus was highly contagious for at least six days before alerting the public on January 20 about what was happening. China waited an additional three days to seal off Wuhan from the rest of the world, thus allowing the coronavirus to spread even further.
A study <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-coronavirus-outbreak-could-have-been-reduced-by-95-if-china-acted-sooner">published</a> by the University of Southampton in March estimated at the time that &#8220;if interventions in [China] could have been conducted one week, two weeks, or three weeks earlier, cases could have been reduced by 66 percent, 86 percent and 95 percent respectively – significantly limiting the geographical spread of the disease.”
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), one of the fiercest China hawks in American politics, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tom-cotton-explains-why-he-thinks-china-allowed-flights-out-of-wuhan-during-outbreak">told</a> Fox News in late April that he believes that China allowed flights out of Wuhan during the coronavirus outbreak “because they didn’t want to see their relative power and standing in the world decline because this virus was contained within China.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday evening that will prevent American companies from engaging in commerce with Bytedance, the Chinese parent-company of the video-sharing app TikTok, beginning in 45 days.
The executive order comes less than a week after Trump suggested he would soon take action against TikTok, which has been the subject of cyber-security concerns, and effectively sets a deadline for an American company to buy the video-sharing app, reports <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/senate-votes-to-ban-tiktok-on-government-issued-phones-11596760843?mod=hp_lead_pos1">The Wall Street Journal</a>.
“TikTok automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users, including Internet and other network activity information such as location data and browsing and search histories,” reads the executive order. “This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information — potentially allowing China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage.”
“TikTok also reportedly censors content that the Chinese Communist Party deems politically sensitive, such as content concerning protests in Hong Kong and China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities. This mobile application may also be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the Chinese Communist Party, such as when TikTok videos spread debunked conspiracy theories about the origins of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus,” reads the order.
TikTok has denied that it sends data to the Chinese government.
Earlier this week, Microsoft publicly acknowledged for the first time that it was in discussions to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/microsoft-says-it-spoke-with-trump-after-tiktok-threat-deal-may-still-happen">acquire TikTok</a> for the American market, and also revealed it could potentially acquire the video-sharing app for Canadian and Australian markets as well.
While Microsoft revealed that these discussions would be finalized by Sept. 15 — a date the president has also mentioned — Trump&#8217;s new executive order seemingly puts a firm deadline on the conclusion of the talks.
Trump has also said that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-says-tiktok-must-be-sold-by-next-month-treasury-department-should-get-a-cut-from-it?%3Futm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=realpatriots">any deal</a> between TikTok and an American buyer would require the Department of the Treasury to receive “a lot of money,” although the president did not float a specific percentage or figure.
Microsoft seemingly acknowledged the president’s position in a blog post Sunday, after speaking with him over the phone, but before he made the remarks about the Treasury Department getting a cut from the deal.
<blockquote>Microsoft fully appreciates the importance of addressing the President’s concerns. It is committed to acquiring TikTok subject to a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury.</blockquote>
Even if TikTok manages to find an American buyer, federal lawmakers have expressed concerns that the deal would sufficiently address their issues with the app.

“It can’t just be data and servers housed in the United States,” he said. “There can be no code, there could be no algorithms, there can be no ties whatsoever between a new U.S.-based TikTok and ByteDance [or] China.”

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) told Fox Business Network&#8217;s &#8220;Mornings with Maria&#8221; on Wednesday that the United States needs to fight back harder against the Chinese Communist Party&#8217;s intellectual property theft, and their attempts to influence things in the United States, by criminalizing taking money from China.
“The Chinese Communist Party continues its campaign of intellectual property theft and forced technology transfer,” Cotton said. “It is past time for us to insist this stop. The Trump administration and the president have been doing that in various ways. I’ve got legislation that would take more steps, as well. So, for instance, criminalizing the payment of money to American professors and academics who are on the payroll of the Chinese Communist Party or their state-owned enterprises.”
“Right now, you can only prosecute those cases for things like wire fraud or lying on federal documents,” Cotton continued. “It’s the act of accepting the Chinese money itself that should be criminalized. There are other steps we can take, as well, to stand up for American companies that shouldn’t have to transfer their intellectual property to Chinese partners simply as a condition of doing business with Chinese consumers.”

Cotton&#8217;s remarks come after he called for changing the law last week in response to news that a former University of Arkansas professor with ties to China was indicted on fraud charges.
&#8220;Federal law enforcement deserves great credit for putting together a strong case against alleged Chinese agent Simon Saw-Teong Ang,&#8221; Cotton <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/?p=press_release&amp;id=1403">said</a>. &#8220;But Chinese spies aren’t ordinary fraudsters – they’re working for a foreign adversary. We ought to change the law so foreign agents in the future are held accountable not only for wire fraud, but for taking money from the Chinese Communist Party in the first place, the real crime in these cases.&#8221;
Cotton also proposed an amendment this week to block Chinese companies from receiving any coronavirus loan money.
The amendment comes after The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/02/us/politics/virus-china-ppp-small-business-loans.html">reported</a> this week:
<blockquote>According to a review of publicly available loan data by the strategy consulting firm Horizon Advisory, $192 million to $419 million has gone to more than 125 companies that Chinese entities own or invest in. Many of the loans were quite sizable; at least 32 Chinese companies received loans worth more than $1 million, with those totaling as much as $180 million.
&#8230;
The report acknowledges that the participation of these companies in the lending program most likely saved an unspecified number of jobs based in the United States, but it also suggests that many of the businesses probably had access to other forms of capital from public or private markets to support their American operations. The Treasury Department has estimated that the overall program has kept 50 million workers employed in the United States.</blockquote>
Cotton&#8217;s office released a <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/?p=press_release&amp;id=1404">statement</a> saying that the senator &#8220;introduced an amendment to the HEALS Act that would prohibit any funds in the HEALS Act-or residual CARES Act funds-from supporting any entity that is under Chinese ownership, control, or influence.&#8221;
&#8220;The legislation also mandates that the Secretary of the Treasury claw back CARES Act funds provided to Chinese firms,&#8221; the statement added. &#8220;The amendment comes in response to reports that Chinese-owned companies received PPP funding from the CARES Act passed earlier this year.&#8221;
&#8220;China unleashed this plague on the world and they must be held accountable-not given a cash bonus by the American government,&#8221; Cotton said. &#8220;My amendment would ensure all coronavirus relief funds stay right here in the United States where they&#8217;re needed the most.&#8221;

A local government in communist China reportedly led a group of workers to two churches last month and ordered them to remove the church&#8217;s crosses, according to leaked reports.
The reports come from Bitter Winter, a publication that the U.S. Department of State has cited in official government reports and <a href="https://www.state.gov/reports/2018-report-on-international-religious-freedom/china-includes-tibet-xinjiang-hong-kong-and-macau/">describes</a> as “an online magazine on religious liberty and human rights in China.”
&#8220;A little past 4 a.m. on July 7, officials from Yongjia county government in Zhejiang Province’s Wenzhou city lead over 100 personnel to Yongfu village to remove crosses from two churches,&#8221; Bitter Winter reported. &#8220;Eyewitnesses reported that most of the demolition personnel wore uniforms of a private security company.&#8221;

&#8220;During the confrontation, a man in his 80s was pushed to the ground and injured,&#8221; the publication continued. &#8220;According to local believers, the church cross escaped removal during the crackdowns on Zhejiang churches in 2014 and 2015, when more than 1,700 crosses were removed in the province, only because the congregation managed to protect it. This time, however, they couldn’t save it: it was toppled at 6:30 that morning, as security guards banned the congregation from filming the scene.&#8221;
The publication included a video of the elderly man that was reportedly thrown on the ground for trying to defend one of the crosses.

Bitter Winter <a href="https://bitterwinter.org/three-self-church-punished-for-not-preaching-ccps-dogma/">reported</a> in May that clergy from the same denomination of state-approved churches, the Three-Self Church, were punished for not preaching the Chinese Communist Party&#8217;s propaganda. Twelve preachers were reportedly banned from being able to preach after they gave “sermons against government regulations.”
Other leaked reports out of China last month indicate that people who were on government welfare, including those with disabilities, were being cut off by the Chinese Communist Party if they did not renounce their faith.
Officials “were ordered to remove crosses, religious symbols and images from the homes of people of faith who receive social welfare payments and replace them with portraits of Chairman Mao and President Xi Jinping,” Bitter Winter <a href="https://bitterwinter.org/people-on-social-welfare-ordered-to-worship-ccp-not-god/?source=tt">reported</a> last week. “The officials were instructed to annul the subsidies to those who protest the order.”
Those reports came out of Linfen, where officials reportedly told residents, “Impoverished religious households can’t receive money from the state for nothing — they must obey the Communist Party for the money they receive.”
Qi Yan, chairman of the Huangjinbu people’s congress, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2119699/praise-xi-jinping-not-jesus-escape-poverty-christian?utm_source=HRIC%20Updates&amp;utm_campaign=57f1bb015f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_11_14&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_b537d30fde-57f1bb015f-259197825">told</a> The South China Morning Post in 2017, “Many poor households have plunged into poverty because of illness in the family. Some resorted to believing in Jesus to cure their illnesses. But we tried to tell them that getting ill is a physical thing and that the people who can really help them are the Communist Party and General Secretary Xi.”
“Many rural people are ignorant. They think God is their savior,” Qi said. “After our cadres’ work, they’ll realise their mistakes and think: we should no longer rely on Jesus, but on the party for help.”

Microsoft said that it plans to continue discussions with Bytedance, the parent company of Chinese video-sharing app TikTok, after speaking with President Donald Trump, who expressed interest in banning the social media app from the United States on Friday amidst cyber-security concerns.
In a blog post on Sunday, Microsoft said CEO Staya Nadella had spoken with the president over the phone and the company was now “prepared to continue discussions to explore a purchase of TikTok in the United States.”
The Wall Street Journal, confirming the existence of the phone call, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/trumps-speaks-with-microsoft-ceo-about-tiktok-deal-11596411277?mod=hp_lead_pos2">reported</a> that White House officials believe the president would be receptive to a deal so long as the national security concerns were resolved.
As recently as Friday evening, Trump was dismissive of any plans that would involve a U.S.-based company acquiring TikTok, a company that lawmakers and government officials have increasingly expressed concerns about in recent months.
But Microsoft now believes that it may reach a deal with Bytedance no later than mid-September, and the proposal could result in Microsoft structuring a deal in which they would own the video-sharing app for Canadian and Australian markets as well, said the company in the blog post.
<blockquote>This new structure would build on the experience TikTok users currently love, while adding world-class security, privacy, and digital safety protections. The operating model for the service would be built to ensure transparency to users as well as appropriate security oversight by governments in these countries.
Among other measures, Microsoft would ensure that all private data of TikTok’s American users is transferred to and remains in the United States. To the extent that any such data is currently stored or backed-up outside the United States, Microsoft would ensure that this data is deleted from servers outside the country after it is transferred.</blockquote>
Back in July, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News that the only people who should download Tiktok are those who want the Chinese Communist Party to have access to their information. TikTok has denied that it gives China access to data.
But TikTok hesitation has also been a rare source of bipartisan concern, and even this weekend, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) expressed concerns about allowing a company to acquire the Chinese video-sharing app.
“I have been very opposed to TikTok, I was one of the first to expose the Chinese links, and I have urged that TikTok be closed down in America,” Schumer told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPpYItDxMqU">reporters</a> Sunday, explaining that any potential deals would still leave lingering questions.
“How will the data be stored and secured? Will still the Chinese have links into TikTok? So before I would be for such a merger, I’d have to get some answers to these questions,” he said.
Fox Business, citing “people close to the matter,” <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/microsoft-tiktok-deal-trump-ban">reports</a> that the president is expected to make a decision about whether to allow an acquisition, or to ban the video-sharing app entirely, by early this week.

Negotiations between Microsoft and Bytedance, the parent company of the Chinese video-sharing app TikTok, have stalled amidst President Donald Trump’s announcement that he plans to ban the social media app from the United States.
According to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/microsoft-and-bytedance-put-tiktok-talks-on-hold-after-trump-signals-opposition-11596312611">The Wall Street Journal</a>, Microsoft halted the negotiations process despite the willingness of Bytedance to reportedly try and sweeten the deal, which could have been finalized as soon as next week.
A White House spokesperson told the WSJ on Saturday that the Trump administration &#8220;has very serious national security concerns over TikTok. We continue to evaluate future policy.&#8221;
Late Friday evening, Trump told reporters that “as far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States.” During the remarks, the president floated <a href="https://twitter.com/ZekeJMiller/status/1289386727338115073">the possibilit</a>y of using either an executive order or emergency economic powers to proceed.
According to Bloomberg News reporter Jennifer Jacobs, the president also dismissed the idea of allowing a U.S. company to purchase the social media app, a statement that seems to have since made Microsoft wary of the deal-making process.

Vanessa Pappas, the U.S. general manager for TikTok, posted a thank-you video to people who use the video-sharing app on Saturday morning, and also expressed that the company was “not planning on going anywhere.&#8221;

While the president’s announcement on Friday brought TikTok to the center-stage of the political sphere, the app has long been a source of worry for government officials.
In October of last year, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) asked <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-u-s-opens-national-security-investigation-into-tiktok">intelligence officials</a> to conduct “an assessment of the national security risks posed by TikTok and other China-based content platforms” operating inside of the United States.
The Department of Defense later advised personnel in several branches of the military to remove the app due to cyber security concerns, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/04/us/tiktok-pentagon-military-ban.html">The New York Times</a>.
In a recent July interview with Laura Ingrahm on Fox News, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States was exploring options, including a potential ban on TikTok, and added that only people who want their “private information in the hands of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-considering-ban-on-tiktok-other-chinese-apps-over-security-concerns">Chinese Communist Party</a>” should download the app.
In an email to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/07/07/tiktok-ban-china-usa-pompeo/">The Washington Post</a>, TikTok denied that government officials in any country have access to user data.
“TikTok is led by an American CEO, with hundreds of employees and key leaders across safety, security, product, and public policy here in the U.S. We have no higher priority than promoting a safe and secure app experience for our users,” said the spokesperson. “We have never provided user data to the Chinese government, nor would we do so if asked.”

President Donald Trump told reporters late on Friday that he will take action as soon as tomorrow that will ban Chinese-owned app TikTok from the United States.
“As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” Trump <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/31/trump-says-he-will-ban-tiktok-through-executive-action-as-soon-as-saturday.html">said</a>.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said earlier this month that the administration was &#8220;very seriously&#8221; looking at banning the app for national security reasons.
&#8220;With respect to Chinese apps on people&#8217;s cell phones, I can assure you, the United States will get this one right too,&#8221; Pompeo said.
When asked if people should download the app on their phones, Pompeo responded, &#8220;Only if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.&#8221;
India has already banned TikTok and other Chinese-owned apps because they were <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/30/tech/tiktok-india-ban-intl-hnk/index.html">deemed</a> to be a &#8220;threat to sovereignty and integrity.&#8221;
Australia <a href="https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/2020/07/07/tiktoks-australia-future/">reportedly</a> is considering banning the app, and the Trump administration&#8217;s decision to ban the app could lead to other U.S. allies deciding to ban it as well.
Earlier this month, the U.K. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-u-k-bans-chinas-huawei-from-its-5g-network-after-months-of-pressure-from-trump-admin">announced</a> that it was banning Chinese-owned Huawei from its 5G network over national security concerns.
U.S. federal agencies and the U.S. military started banning TikTok on government-issued devices late last year and early this year.
On Tuesday, Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) wrote a <a href="https://www.rubio.senate.gov/public/_cache/files/7689fa45-12a9-4260-be02-0a280869762c/93B601739F68988F4F3792CA91701079.200728-tiktok-election-interference-letter-final.pdf">letter</a> to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and the director of the FBI highlighting concerns about the app.
The letter stated:
We write to raise concerns about TikTok, the Chinese social-media service, which could enable the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to engage in influence operations against the United States, including operations designed to interfere with our elections. 
The Trump Administration has rightly taken steps to maintain the security and integrity of our elections. As President Trump stated in Executive Order 13848 in September, 2018, &#8220;the proliferation of digital devices and internet-based communications has created significant vulnerabilities and magnified the scope and intensity of the threat of foreign interference.&#8221; The administration has acted decisively on this threat by forcing media outlets controlled by hostile state actors like Russia and China to register as foreign agents, imposing sanctions on foreign officials who attempted to meddle in American elections, and issuing repeated warnings about efforts by hostile foreign powers to interfere in upcoming elections. 
TikTok has become a popular forum for Americans-particularly younger Americans-to engage in political conversations. We are greatly concerned that the CCP could use its control over TikTok to distort or manipulate these conversations to sow discord among Americans and to achieve its preferred political outcomes. 
TikTok is owned by the Chinese firm ByteDance, and the majority of the company&#8217;s engineering and development resources are based in China. ByteDance regularly modifies TikTok content to satisfy CCP censorship rules. In 2019, the Washington Post reported that ByteDance employees based in China set TikTok&#8217;s content standards and issued commands to remove TikTok content they deemed &#8220;subversive or controversial.&#8221; In November 2019, TikTok locked the account of an American teenager who posted a video critical of the CCP&#8217;s horrific crimes against the Uighur people in China. TikTok only reversed this act of censorship and unlocked the young woman&#8217;s account after a public outcry.
The CCP devotes significant resources to conduct information operations overseas. Beijing exploits the openness of Western democracies and social-media platforms to propagate the Party&#8217;s preferred narratives. The CCP conducts these influence operations by coopting traditional media outlets, spending tens of millions of dollars to purchase space in major U.S. newspapers for propaganda by state-owned outlets like China Daily, and working to ensure Chinese state television channels like CGTN dominate Chinese-language media overseas. The CCP also manipulates overseas political discussions on Chinese-owned social media platforms like WeChat. Chinese government officials increasingly use Western social-media companies, including those banned in China, to flood global social media with propaganda and misinformation. 
With this history in mind, we respectfully request answers to the following questions about TikTok:

<li>Could the CCP direct networks of bots to create or boost its preferred political content on TikTok and other social-media platforms?</li>

On a court that says in large black letters, &#8220;Black Lives Matter,&#8221; every player, coach, and referee in attendance at the Thursday evening Utah Jazz v New Orleans Pelicans NBA game took a knee during the national anthem.

&#8220;One of the academies that was opened by the NBA was in Xinjiang, where the Chinese Communist Party allegedly has millions of people locked up in concentration camps,&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kids-abused-at-nba-youth-training-camps-in-china-employee-says-it-was-like-working-in-world-war-ii-germany-report-claims">The Daily Wire</a> noted. &#8220;ESPN says that it obtained an email that the NBA sent to employees that instructed employees not to tell ESPN that they were being instructed to answer questions about the league’s new China scandal.&#8221;
Bringing attention to the NBA&#8217;s troubling relationship with communist and human rights-violating China, Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted on October 4 an expression of solidarity with the protesters in Hong Kong who were pushing back against the communist regime. “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-heres-how-much-money-that-pro-hong-kong-tweet-cost-the-nba">Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong</a>,&#8221; the post said.
Morey, though, was seemingly pressured into deleting the post, and the NBA initially publicly admonished him.
&#8220;Amid pressure, Morey quickly deleted the tweet, while the NBA issued a <a href="https://twitter.com/NBAPR/status/1181007400729489409/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">statement</a> describing the post as having &#8216;deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China, which is regrettable,'&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-heres-how-much-money-that-pro-hong-kong-tweet-cost-the-nba">The Daily Wire</a> outlined. &#8220;The NBA’s initial response sparked accusations that the league had &#8216;caved to Chinese censorship,&#8217; prompting NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to attempt to &#8216;clarify&#8217; the league’s stance, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/10/08/nba-commissioner-adam-silver-says-players-executives-are-free-comment-china/">stating</a> the league &#8216;will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees and team owners say or will not say on these issues.&#8217; Morey, said Silver, has a right to &#8216;exercising his freedom of expression.'&#8221;

The NBA is facing a new scandal stemming from its ties to communist China after a new ESPN report revealed that the league opened up youth training camps in China, including a camp in a Chinese state that operates concentration camps, where allegedly kids repeatedly endured physical abuse at the hands of officials.
&#8220;American coaches at three NBA training academies in China told league officials their Chinese partners were physically abusing young players and failing to provide schooling, even though commissioner Adam Silver had said that education would be central to the program,&#8221; ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29553829/espn-investigation-finds-coaches-nba-china-academies-complained-player-abuse-lack-schooling">reported</a>. &#8220;One former league employee who worked in China wondered how the NBA, which has been so progressive on issues around Black Lives Matter and moved the 2017 All-Star Game out of Charlotte, North Carolina, over a law requiring transgender people to use bathrooms corresponding to the sex listed on their birth certificates, could operate a training camp amid a Chinese government crackdown that also targeted NBA employees.&#8221;
Sources who spoke to ESPN said that coaches at the academies wondered if Silver, who just <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nba-commissioner-maxes-out-on-donation-to-biden-campaign-report-says">donated</a> the maximum amount possible to the Biden campaign, knew about the alleged child abuse.

ESPN says that it obtained an email that the NBA sent to employees that instructed employees not to tell ESPN that they were being instructed to answer questions about the league&#8217;s new China scandal.
A former league employee told ESPN that working in Xinjiang was like &#8220;World War II Germany,&#8221; while another said that it was &#8220;a sweat camp for athletes.&#8221; A former coach said, &#8220;we were basically working for the Chinese government.&#8221; Multiple coaches quit because of the abuse that they were seeing happen to the young players.
NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer Mark Tatum, who oversees international operations, claimed that the league received a few complaints about the abuse and claimed that the incidents were never reported to top league officials.
Numerous officials who worked for the NBA in China said that the level of abuse was “much more prevalent&#8221; than what Tatum had claimed.
One coach said that a Chinese coach threw a ball at a young player&#8217;s face from point-blank range and then &#8220;kick[ed] him in the gut.&#8221;
&#8220;Imagine you have a kid who&#8217;s 13, 14 years old, and you&#8217;ve got a grown coach who is 40 years old hitting your kid,&#8221; the coach said. &#8220;We&#8217;re part of that. The NBA is part of that.&#8221;
In an attempt to deflect responsibility for the alleged child abuse, Tatum claimed, &#8220;We weren&#8217;t responsible for the local coaches, we didn&#8217;t have the authority. We don&#8217;t have oversight of the local coaches, of the academic programs or the living conditions.&#8221;
ESPN said that some of the league&#8217;s problems stemmed from their decision to &#8220;embed the academies&#8221; in facilities that were controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.
Activists involved in fighting against China&#8217;s concentration camps told ESPN that the NBA&#8217;s presence in Xinjiang was legitimizing &#8220;crimes against humanity.&#8221;
The NBA claims that they left Xinjiang a year ago, but one coach told ESPN that wasn&#8217;t exactly accurate because the NBA was &#8220;still trying to get people to go out there.&#8221;
&#8220;It didn&#8217;t end because [the NBA] said, &#8216;We&#8217;re gonna end this,'&#8221; the coach said.
