Announcing Carly Fiorina as his vice-presidential running mate on Wednesday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) spoke before supporters in Indianapolis.
During his approximately half hour introduction, Cruz praised Fiorina’s status as the first woman to become a CEO of a Fortune 20 company when she headed HP.
Describing the contest for the GOP presidential nomination as a fight for the soul of the Republican Party and the future of America, Fiorina said Clinton and Trump amounted to “two sides of the same coin.” Despite Trump’s progression towards securing the threshold of 1,237 delegates, she said the campaign is worth fighting for.
“They’re both liberal, we know that,” said Fiorina of Clinton and Trump. Saying neither would “challenge the system,” Fiorina said of the two, “They are the system.”
“He is what he says he is. He is who he says he is,” said Fiorina of Cruz, indirectly invoking statements from Trump’s new campaign manager resembling Mitt Romney’s “etch-a-sketch” moment.
On the subject of the greater centralization of power within government, Fiorina declared, “power concentrated is power abused.” Describing the Constitution as a document composed “to restrain the concentration and the abuse of power,” Fiorina called for political realignment with the founding document’s purpose and the vision of The Framers.
“Our country is being taken away from us,” said Fiorina, describing political elites as unmaking the nation’s foundation. “We must take our country back,” added Fiorina to enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Taking about thirty minutes to wrap up his introductory speech for Fiorina, media observers on Twitter took note of the delay. TV news coverage pulled away from the event to return later upon Fiorina’s entrance to the platform, given that she was kept backstage to preserve some element of surprise.
