Tuesday evening, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) weighed in on the House resolution that passed requiring a background check for every firearm sale, pointing out that the resolution would make it illegal for him to loan a firearm to friends so they could protect themselves in a dangerous situation. Crenshaw noted a story about a young woman who had defended herself with her gun against thieves trying to rob her, then commented, “Situations like this story are why we protect the 2nd Amendment. Side note: With universal background checks, I wouldn’t be able to let my friends borrow my handgun when they travel alone like this. We would make felons out of people just for defending themselves.”
On Wednesday morning, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) disingenuously added her own partisan perspective to what Crenshaw had tweeted, sniping, “You are a member of Congress. Why are you ‘lending’ guns to people unsupervised who can’t pass a basic background check? The people you’re giving a gun to have likely abused their spouse or have a violent criminal record, & you may not know it. Why on earth would you do that?”
As Twitchy noted, ten minutes before Crenshaw’s tweet that was attacked by Ocasio-Cortez, he had stated why he was opposed to universal background checks, tweeting in reference to the shooting in Odessa, Texas, “This is the 1st mass shooting where a universal background check ‘possibly’ would have prevented him from having a gun, if and only if, they decided to self-enforce that law. Guys who shoot cops tend not to self-enforce laws. And we don’t make sweeping policy on one situation.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s snide remarks were taken to task immediately:
Matt Whitlock of the National Republican Senatorial Committee: “Bad-faith assumptions like this are a genuine challenge in the gun debates. @AOC suggesting that @DanCrenshawTX would only be loaning a gun to a friend because they’re a violent criminal or spouse abuser who can’t pass a background check is a pretty bizarre leap.”
JD Rucker, editor-in-chief of the NOQ Report: “I’m not one who jumps on the ‘AOC is dumb’ bandwagon, but this is just plain stupid. You’re not understanding the implications of the universal background checks which would prohibit lending guns without performing a check personally. This is a doltish argument.”
Alex Griswold of The Washington Free Beacon: “Crenshaw dragged over a barrel, filled it with water, put some fish in the barrel, handed AOC a shotgun, and she promptly shot some bystander.”
The House resolution states, “It shall be unlawful for a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer to transfer possession of, or title to, a firearm to another person who is not so licensed unless the importer, manufacturer, or dealer has provided such other person with a notice of the prohibition under paragraph (1), and such other person has certified that such other person has been provided with this notice on a form prescribed by the Attorney General.”
As The Daily Wire reported, in July, Crenshaw ripped Ocasio-Cortez for claims she made, including that CBP officers were telling detained women during her visit of the facility that they had to drink water from the toilet if they were thirsty.
Crenshaw blasted:
She’s getting bolder with her lies on this. People like AOC are operating off of a false premise and deliberately designed to misinform the American people for her own political ends. Remember, first there was no crisis at all. Then it was a manufactured crisis. Then it was a crisis completely created by Trump. Then there were concentration camps. Then people are Nazis.
Now she is saying that Border Patrol agents harassed her and forced migrants to drink out of toilets? This is insanity. This is not true. There is no one else corroborating these kinds of reports and yet she is using it to try and make her case that we shouldn’t have any enforcement and that we should have open borders. This is really dishonest behavior from a member of Congress and I honestly can’t believe it.
