A convicted murderer who was executed in the state of Florida on Thursday used his final words to attack Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis while the family of the victim praised the governor for delivering justice.

Donald Dillbeck murdered Faye Lamb Vann in 1990 after escaping from a work-release job in Gadsden County where he was serving a life sentence for murdering a sheriff’s deputy, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. While trying to evade law enforcement, he stumbled upon Vann sitting in her car as she waited outside a store while her family was inside.

Vann fought back and Dillbeck stabbed her to death and slit her throat.

“I know I hurt people when I was young. I really messed up,” Dillbeck said as his final words. “But I know Ron DeSantis has done a lot worse. He’s taken a lot from a lot of people. I speak for all men, women and children. He’s put his foot on our necks. Ron DeSantis and other people like him can suck our d****.”

The victim’s children released a statement to the Department of Corrections that praised the governor for giving the family closure.

“11,932 days ago Donald Dillbeck brutally killed our mother. We were robbed of years of memories with her and it has been very painful ever since. However, the execution has given us some closure. We are grateful to Governor DeSantis for carrying out the sentence.”

The report noted that two deputies who worked with the sheriff’s deputy who Dillbeck murdered, 31-year-old Lee County Deputy Dwight Lynn Hall, were in attendance when Dillbeck was executed.

“This has been 44 years of waiting,” said Bill Rogers. “We’re the old guys now.”

Rogers and Tony Vetter told the publication that they were on duty the night that Hall was murdered by Dillbeck, who was on the run from authorities in Indiana for carjacking.

The retired deputies said that Hall approached a vehicle where Dillbeck was sleeping and that when Dillbeck woke up, he ran away and a chase ensued. When Hall tackled Dillbeck, his gun fell out of his holster and Dillbeck used the weapon to kill the deputy.

“One person’s bad enough. But he did two, and he did the second brutal,” Rogers added. “Nobody should ever be ecstatic about somebody being put to death, but there had to be consequences.”
