On Monday, prominent mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Conor McGregor was arrested after an altercation with a fan turned ugly.

According to Miami Beach, Florida police, McGregor was charged with felony strong-armed robbery and criminal mischief for breaking a fan’s phone, which was estimated to be worth $1,000, and taking it with him after the incident.

The Miami Herald reports:

According to an arrest report, McGregor and the fan were walking out of the resort, home to the LIV nightclub, just past 5 a.m. When the fan tried taking a photo with his cell, McGregor “slapped” the phone out of his hand, then stomped on it several times, the report said.

McGregor picked up the phone, valued at $1,000, and walked away with it, police said.

After police investigated the matter, including a review of surveillance footage which captured the incident, McGregor was arrested at a Miami Beach home on Monday.

“MMA fighter Conor McGregor charged with strong-armed robbery and criminal mischief (both felonies) for allegedly smashing a fan’s phone outside the Fountainebleau hotel,” Miami Herald reporter David Ovalle posted Monday, along with a mugshot of the famous fighter.

McGregor posted bond and was released late Monday night from Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Media swarmed the 30-year-old as he left the Miami-Dade County jail:

McGregor addressed the arrest on Tuesday morning via an Instagram post.

“Patience in this world is a virtue I continue to work on. I love my fans dearly. Thank you all,” the fighter wrote, captioning a photo of himself walking out of prison.

Samuel Rabin, a lawyer representing McGregor, released a statement concerning the arrest. McGregor “was involved in a minor altercation involving a cell phone that resulted in a call to law enforcement,” he said. “Mr. McGregor appreciates the response of law enforcement and pledges his full cooperation.”

According to Business Insider, McGregor is prepping for a UFC comeback this summer: “Conor McGregor will likely return to the UFC in the summer against Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, according to his boss Dana White.”

“McGregor is currently banned from fighting after the Nevada Athletic State Commission (NSAC) gave him a six-month backdated ban for the role he played in the post-fight brawls that marred his UFC 229 loss to Nurmagomedov,” noted the outlet. “After Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor with a tight neck crank in the fourth round of a wild bout in October 2018, he refused to celebrate and instead leaped over the fence to charge at McGregor’s cage-side friend Dillon Danis. While that was going on, members of Nurmagomedov’s team were seen invading the Octagon and exchanging punches with McGregor.”

In April, McGregor was caught on video hurling a furniture dolly at a bus. The Daily Wire reported:

On Thursday, the New York Police Department issued an arrest warrant for MMA star Conor McGregor after he went on a destructive rampage at the Barclays Center.

According to Ariel Helwani, an MMA reporter, “Conor McGregor and members of his team showed up at the Barclays Center at the very end of media day moments ago. There was an altercation with some of the departing fighters who are competing on the card.”
