Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher revealed that President Donald Trump has invited him back to the White House for a second dinner — and he plans to go.
Maher, who made waves when he accepted the last invitation, announced his plans on a recent episode of his “Club Random” podcast. He told his guest, Ari Emanuel, that he’d gotten a call and a second invitation “out of the blue” — and that Trump had sweetened the pot by promising not to “say bad things” about him like he had after the last dinner.
“It’s so weird, you know, after the first dinner, he was — I went back to doing what I do and you know, for people who —” Maher said.
“He probably screamed at you!” Emanuel interjected. “He said you’re low rate —”
“Of course,” Maher laughed. “It never stops! He tried to stop me from getting the Mark Twain award … but then he just — out of the blue — let’s have dinner again. You know, I said, ‘great.’ And he was really nice, like, ‘I promise I won’t say bad things about you like I did the last time.’”
“And I texted back and I said, ‘You know what? You’re the president of the United States, say whatever the f*ck you want,'” he continued. “I’m just glad we’re talking. It’s like being called a hockey puck by Don Rickles. It’s just what he does. It’s how he talks.”
Maher was famously attacked after the first dinner by people on the Left who complained that he’d given Trump credibility by agreeing to the conversation.
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator Larry David tore into the comedian over what he dubbed “My Dinner with Adolf,” writing an essay in mocking tones from Maher’s perspective.
Suddenly he seemed so human. Here I was, prepared to meet Hitler, the one I’d seen and heard — the public Hitler. But this private Hitler was a completely different animal. And oddly enough, this one seemed more authentic, like this was the real Hitler. The whole thing had my head spinning.
Maher, following the first dinner with the president, said that he’d been pleasantly surprised by Trump’s demeanor.
“A crazy person doesn’t live in the White House,” Maher remarked at the time. “A person who plays a crazy person on TV a lot lives there, which I know is f*cked up. It’s just not as f*cked up as I thought it was.”
