The re-election campaign for President Joe Biden on Friday announced a $50 million “paid media blitz” in battleground states emphasizing high-profile events like the Olympic Games and the Republican National Convention.

The spending spree comes as Biden has faced pressure to drop out of the presidential race over his physical and mental condition after a shaky debate performance against former President Donald Trump. The GOP convention takes place July 15-18 in Milwaukee. The Summer Olympic Games begin on July 26.

“The Olympics, which are popular among every demographic and increasingly popular among Gen Z, will be a critical moment for Team Biden-Harris to reach a wide swath of the voters this campaign needs to win in November,” the campaign said. “Team Biden-Harris will also leverage other key moments this month, including the Republican National Convention, where Trump and his extremist agenda will be under a national spotlight.”

The radio, digital, and TV ads will target audiences in the key battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In recent months, Biden has largely fallen behind Trump in polling from these states.

The campaign said the spots would focus on “a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, economic relief and opportunities for middle- and working-class families, and the threat Donald Trump poses to our democracy and the rule of law.”

Last month, two Left-wing organizations launched a $50 million ad campaign for Biden touting his “Inflation Reduction Act” in the same battleground states. The legislation, signed in August 2022,  allocated billions in taxpayer-funded subsidies for green energy companies.

The campaign, organized by Climate Power and Future Forward USA Action, took aim at oil companies for high gas prices and said that the Inflation Reduction Act “reduces pollution,” “lowers the cost of healthcare,” and has created “new, good paying clean energy jobs in solar and wind” and reduced dependence on “foreign oil.”

Biden has held a massive fundraising advantage over Trump, but the former president has gained ground in recent weeks with money pouring in after his conviction in his New York hush-money trial.
