Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden falsely claimed during a CNN interview on Friday that Russian election interference did not happen during the Obama-Biden administration which led to the 76-year-old being mocked online.
“Look at what’s happened with Putin. While he — while Putin is trying to undo our elections, he is undoing elections in — in Europe,” Biden told CNN’s Chris Cuomo. “Look what’s happened in Hungary. Look what’s happened in Poland. Look what’s happened in — look what’s happening.”
“You think that would have happened on my watch or Barack’s watch?” Biden continued. “You can’t answer that, but I promise you it wouldn’t have, and it didn’t.”
While Biden was vice president, the Russians did meddle in the 2016 presidential election, which even led Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, to say that the Obama administration shares responsibility for what happened.
Biden also claimed without evidence that if Trump is re-elected that “there will be no NATO in four years or five years.”
Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, said earlier this year that Trump “is committed to NATO” and that Trump deserves credit for helping NATO secure $100 billion in additional funding for defense.
“So we see some real money and some real results,” Stoltenberg said. “And we see that the clear message from President Donald Trump is having an impact.”
Biden was widely mocked in response to his false claims, which did not receive any pushback from Cuomo.
