That’s the rating Rotten Tomatoes gives to Jim Carrey’s new very bad, really awful movie, “Dark Crimes.”
Carrey, once America’s funnyman and the up and coming replacement for the brilliant Jerry Lewis — after whom he very much modeled his style — is now box-office poison.
The wonderful film critic Rex Reed absolutely torched the movie in a review titled: “‘Dark Crimes’ Backfires Like a Meal of Refried Beans.”
What has happened to Jim Carrey? Once a revered comedian with a big fan base, Carrey hasn’t made a good movie in 10 years, and the ones he’s in have been box-office bombs. Now he’s turned to drama, and like an army of funny men who tried it before, hoping for new respect as a serious actor from both critics and audiences, he is advised to brace himself. I admire Carrey for taking on a grim and sobering project made in Krakow, Poland, that requires a range he would never be asked to show in any American sitcom, but Dark Crimes is so lurid, irrelevant and unwatchable it makes you wonder if he ever read the script.
Reed’s got some other brilliant passages, like this: “The screenplay teeters between depraved and confusing (‘Truth is what you make it. Reality is perception.’) Say what?”
Carrey has, of late, gone off the deep end. He seems to spend his days drawing infantile pictures and posting them on Twitter. They’re always filled with the liberal hate so popular in Hollywood these days. Here’s his latest one:

But back to his horrendous acting. Carrey’s trying to follow the likes of Robin Williams from comedy to drama, but he simply doesn’t have the chops. “A few words should be said about Carrey’s performance: It may be the worst dramatic acting of his career, a charmless cartoon of self-repression,” wrote Ignatiy Vishnevetsky of AV Club.
Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post said simply: “That this exercise in vulgarity was made at all is shameful.”
Carrey has been on a fierce skid for years, at least a decade. You have to go all the way back to 2005 to find his last good movie (and it was very good), “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” That came just a year after “Bruce Almighty.”
Since then, though, Dud City. Last year’s “The Bad Batch” pulled in just $180,851, according to Box Office Mojo. The budget was $6 million! And in the last 10 years, he’s made these movies (see how many you’ve even heard of): “Yes Man,” “I Love You Phillip Morris,” “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” “Kick-Ass 2,” and “Rubble Kings.” Blergh.
And now, the greatest humiliation for an actor: Straight to video. Yes, Carrey’s latest wretched movie didn’t even make it into movie theaters, reports Breitbart.
Time to put a fork in him, he’s done.
