2018 truly is The Year of the Woman and the Academy Awards followed suit: Every single nominee in both the best actress and best supporting actress was female. Buh dum tss.
But it is the first time since 2009 that the Academy nominated a woman in the Best Director category, tapping Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird” (the last woman to be nominated — and the only one of four to win — was Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker”).
The Oscar nominees for best motion picture are “Call Me By Your Name,” ″Darkest Hour,” ″Dunkirk,” ″Get Out,” ″Lady Bird,” ″Phantom Thread,” ″The Post,” ″The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
“The Shape of Water” led with 13 nominations. “Get Out” garnered four Oscar nominations — Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Leading Actor and Best Picture. Director Jordan Peele is just the fifth African American nominated in the category.
James Franco, star of “The Disaster Artist,” was snubbed by the Academy (despite winning a Golden Globe) after multiple women accused him of sexual harassment. But the film was nominated in the best adapted screenplay category.
“The Post” was also mostly snubbed, except for Meryl Streep (at this point the actress is just nominated by rote, even if she doesn’t star in a movie). Tom Hanks got no Oscar nod, nor did director Steven Spielberg, although it was nominated for Best Picture.
Also somewhat snubbed was “I, Tonya,” which did not get a Best Picture nom (although Margot Robbie was nominated in the Best Actress category). And Armie Hammer was left out of Best Supporting Actor for “Call Me By Your Name.”
But the biggest snub of all was “Wonder Woman.” The movie — the top-grossing superhero original movie both domestically and globally — got zero nominations.
So much for The Year of the (Wonder) Woman.
