Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) warned Senate Democrats on Tuesday night that Senate Republicans will confirm President Donald Trump&#8217;s nominees to their chosen roles, with or without their help.
Cotton made the remarks during a speech on the Senate floor after Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) blocked a vote to confirm former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe to become the next director of the CIA.
&#8220;I don’t really understand the objection to Mr. Ratcliffe,&#8221; Cotton said. &#8220;He was confirmed by the Senate to be the director of National Intelligence. He was fully vetted through the bipartisan process on the Senate Intelligence Committee. We voted him out yesterday, on a 14 to 3 vote. Senator Schumer stood here yesterday and talked about how we’re going to cooperate on highly qualified capable nominees with integrity, which John Ratcliffe is.&#8221;
Cotton noted that the intentional delay meant that on Tuesday, only Secretary of State Marco Rubio was confirmed to his role, and there would be no more votes on Wednesday.

&#8220;I hope nobody’s making any plans for the weekend or the evenings cause we’re going to get these nominees confirmed,&#8221; Cotton said. &#8220;Starting with Mr. Ratcliffe and then moving on to Mr. Hegseth and moving on to [Mrs.] Noem. The easy way or the hard way. We tried to cooperate with the Democrats. The cooperation has not been forthcoming, so I guess it’s going to be the hard way. Starting on Thursday.&#8221;
Cotton said that Democrats were &#8220;trying to drag out all of these nominations to play procedural games, as we’re about to with Pete Hegseth’s nomination, to try to deny President Trump his cabinet in a prompt and timely fashion, just like the Democrats did in 2017.&#8221;

&#8220;We&#8217;ve now wasted a whole day where we could have been acting on that nomination,&#8221; Thune said, adding that the question before the Senate was &#8220;do we want a vote on these folks on Tuesday or vote on them on Friday, Saturday and Sunday? Because that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re going to do. This can be easy or this can be hard.&#8221;
Thune highlighted that Ratcliffe, a former House Republican from Texas who served as director of national intelligence at the end of Trump&#8217;s first term, sailed through the Senate Intelligence Committee by a 14-3 vote with bipartisan support.
&#8220;This is about America&#8217;s national security interests. And we&#8217;re stalling,&#8221; Thune continued. &#8220;So that&#8217;s not going to happen. Thune also took procedural steps that will pave the way to final confirmation votes in the coming days for Ratcliffe&#8217;s nomination, as well as South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem&#8217;s nomination to become Homeland Security secretary and Pete Hegseth&#8217;s nomination to become Defense secretary — both of whom have advanced out of committee, too.
With a post to X featuring a video of his remarks, Thune suggested there could even be recess appointments. Trump has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-is-how-recess-appointments-work-and-how-they-could-help-trump-fill-his-cabinet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advocated</a> for installing his own nominees in such a manner, during a recess, if the Senate fails to confirm them in a &#8220;timely manner.&#8221;
In rejecting the Senate Republicans&#8217; bid to proceed more swiftly with a confirmation vote on Ratcliffe&#8217;s nomination, Murphy <a href="https://www.c-span.org/event/us-senate/us-senate/430291" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he wanted a &#8220;full&#8221; debate that lasted a couple more days while insisting that some members had &#8220;serious concerns&#8221; that the CIA pick would not be able to &#8220;distance himself from the political interests of President Trump.&#8221;
But Senate Intelligence Chairman Tom Cotton (R-AR) wasn&#8217;t buying it. He rejected Murphy&#8217;s claim about Democrats needing more time to discuss Ratcliffe&#8217;s nomination and surmised that &#8220;what this is really about is trying to drag out all of these nominations to play procedural games, as we&#8217;re about to, with Pete Hegseth&#8217;s nomination to try to deny President Trump his Cabinet in a prompt and timely fashion.&#8221;

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tom-cotton" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tom Cotton</a> (R-AR) signaled stiff opposition on Sunday to efforts to try to revive TikTok in the United States.
Cotton, who has been one of the leading voices against China in Washington over the last decade, released a statement with Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE) in response to U.S. tech companies complying with U.S. law to remove TikTok from their app stores.
&#8220;We commend Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft for following the law and halting operations with ByteDance and TikTok, and we encourage other companies to do the same,&#8221; they wrote. &#8220;The law, after all, risks ruinous bankruptcy for any company who violates it. Now that the law has taken effect, there&#8217;s no legal basis for any kind of &#8216;extension&#8217; of its effective date.&#8221;
&#8220;For TikTok to come back online in the future, ByteDance must agree to a sale that satisfies the law&#8217;s qualified-divestiture requirements by severing all ties between TikTok and Communist China,&#8221; they continued. &#8220;Only then will Americans be protected from the grave threat posed to their privacy and security by a communist-controlled TikTok.&#8221;
Cotton responded directly to TikTok later on Sunday after the company released a statement saying that it was coming back online because President-elect Donald Trump released a statement saying that he wanted to save the company.

The National Sheriff’s Association urged the Senate on Monday to quickly confirm <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tulsi-gabbard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tulsi Gabbard</a> as Director of National Intelligence, saying she had the organization’s complete endorsement.  
In a <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2025/01/National-Sheriffs-Letter-Endorsing-Tulsi-Gabbard.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), National Sheriff’s Association President Kieran Donahue, a sheriff from Idaho, wrote that the Senate should “expeditiously” move to confirm Gabbard, saying her confirmation was needed to increase trust between local law enforcement and the intelligence community. The association represents more than 3,000 sheriffs across the country. 
“Ms. Gabbard has demonstrated a commitment to addressing the critical disconnect between our intelligence agencies and local law enforcement in preparing for sophisticated and pervasive threats,” Donahue wrote to Cotton, who heads up the Select Committee on Intelligence. 
He wrote that the need for cooperation was on display when sheriffs in Texas and Georgia played a significant role in the investigation into the New Orleans terror attack that left 14 people dead. 
“The recent terror attack on New Orleans serves as a stark reminder of the need for seamless coordination. Hearings for several of President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks will begin this week, starting with Pete Hegseth&#8217;s meeting with the Senate Armed Services Committee Tuesday morning. Gabbard’s hearing has not yet been scheduled but could be set for sometime next week.

On Wednesday, GOP Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Jerry Moran (R-KS) reintroduced the Justice for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/9-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">9/11</a> Act, originally introduced by Cotton and McConnell last August, to cancel any plea deals made between the Biden administration and the Guantanamo Bay inmates who planned the 9/11/2001 attacks. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) is introducing companion legislation in the House.
Three detainees at Guantanamo Bay, including alleged 9/11 architect Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, had filed plea deals. Last week, a military appeals court ruled that the Pentagon could not reverse the deals reached by military prosecutors and defense attorneys.

The Trump transition said the delay, especially less than a week after an ISIS terrorist attack on U.S. soil, is &#8220;sad to see.&#8221;
“After the terrorist attacks on New Year&#8217;s Eve and New Years Day, it&#8217;s sad to see Sen. Warner and Democrats playing politics with Americans’ safety and our national security by stonewalling Lt. Col. Gabbard&#8217;s nomination, who is willing to meet with every member who will meet with her as this process continues,” Trump transition spokeswoman Alexa Henning told The Daily Wire.
Until Tuesday, Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia was the only Democrat on the committee to have met with Gabbard since her nomination. A source close to Gabbard told The Daily Wire that Gabbard’s team first contacted Warner’s office on November 27. Warner’s office did not reply for over a month, and finally met with Gabbard on Tuesday.
“It is vital the senate confirms President Elect Trump&#8217;s national security nominees swiftly, which in the past has been a bipartisan effort, we are working in lockstep with Chairmen Cotton and look forward to Lt. Col. Gabbard’s hearing before Inauguration Day,” she added.
GOP leaders have stressed the need to put in place Trump&#8217;s national security team soon after a terror attack killed 14 people in New Orleans on January 1.
“With reports of ISIS inspiration, the American people expect clear answers from the administration. The threat posed by ISIS will outlast this administration, and this is a clear example of why the Senate must get President Trump’s national security team in place as quickly as possible,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune <a href="https://x.com/SenJohnThune/status/1874657184497254803">said</a> at the time.
Warner has denied that Democrats are seeking to delay Gabbard’s hearing – the nominee is still missing some vetting materials, he says. Gabbard is expected to submit a second pre-hearing questionnaire by Thursday, and she completed her FBI background check process last week, according to <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/01/07/tulsi-gabbard-senate-democrats-delay-hearing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Axios</a>. Gabbard’s active security clearance should expedite her background check.
Warner said after his meeting with Gabbard on Tuesday that the committee cannot schedule a hearing until it receives all the vetting materials, per committee rules.
“There’s no delay,” Warner said, according to <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5072106-tulsi-gabbard-senate-intelligence-warner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hill</a>. “We do it by the book. Wait for an FBI background check, we ask her questions.”
According to Intelligence Committee <a href="https://www.intelligence.senate.gov/about/rules-procedure" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rules</a>: “No confirmation hearing shall be held sooner than seven calendar days after receipt of the background questionnaire, financial disclosure statement, and responses to additional pre-hearing questions, if transmitted, unless the time limit is waived by a majority vote of the Committee.”
Warner added that the committee has received all the vetting materials on John Ratcliffe, Trump’s pick to lead the CIA, and is in the process of scheduling his hearing.

The bill, titled the &#8220;Retiring the Egregious Confusion Over the Genuine Name of Israel’s Zone of Influence by Necessitating Government-use of Judea and Samaria (RECOGNIZING Judea and Samaria) Act,&#8221; matched legislation in the House <a href="https://tenney.house.gov/media/press-releases/congresswoman-tenney-introduces-legislation-recognize-rightful-name-judea-and">sponsored</a> by Reps. Claudia Tenney (R-NY),  Randy Weber (R-TX) and Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY).

“The Jewish people’s legal and historic rights to Judea and Samaria goes back thousands of years. The U.S. should stop using the politically charged term West Bank to refer to the biblical heartland of Israel,” Cotton stated.
“The Israeli people have an undeniable and indisputable historical and legal claim over Judea and Samaria, and at this critical moment in history, the United States must reaffirm this,”  Tenney echoed. “This bill reaffirms Israel&#8217;s rightful claim to its territory. I remain committed to defending the integrity of the Jewish state and fully supporting Israel&#8217;s sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.”
The bill states that the U.S. government should “refer to the land annexed by Israel from Jordan during the 1967 Six-Day War by its historical names of ‘Judea and Samaria,’ with the land south of Jerusalem being considered ‘Judea’ and the land north of Jerusalem being considered ‘Samaria.’”
The term “West Bank” only came into common usage after the 1948 Israeli War of Independence, while the term &#8220;Samaria&#8221; dates back at least 2,000 years. The great historian Flavius Josephus <a href="https://sourcebooks.fordham.edu/ancient/josephus-wara.asp">wrote</a>, “Now as to the country of Samaria, it lies between Judea and Galilee.”
As for Judea, Josephus explained, “In the limits of Samaria and Judea lies the village Anuath, which is also named Borceos. This is the northern boundary of Judea. The southern parts of Judea, if they be measured lengthways, are bounded by a Village adjoining to the confines of Arabia; the Jews that dwell there call it Jordan. However, its breadth is extended from the river Jordan to Joppa.”
Josephus also explained how Jerusalem was central in Judea, writing, “The city Jerusalem is situated in the very middle; on which account some have, with sagacity enough, called that city the Navel of the country. Nor indeed is Judea destitute of such delights as come from the sea, since its maritime places extend as far as Ptolemais: it was parted into eleven portions, of which the royal city Jerusalem was the supreme, and presided over all the neighboring country, as the head does over the body.”
Virtually all of the events in the Old Testament occurred in Judea and Samaria; Hebron is considered the burial place of the Biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and where King David was crowned; Shiloh was where the Tabernacle rested for roughly 370 years; Joseph, who became the Egyptian pharaoh’s right-hand man, is buried in Shechem; Elon Moreh is where the Bible says God promised the Land of Israel to Abraham; and David fought Goliath in the Valley of Elah. These are just some of the Jewish biblical connections to Judea and Samaria.

President Joe Biden faced significant backlash after calling the tens of millions of people who voted for President Donald Trump &#8220;garbage,&#8221; a remark that the administration has frantically tried to clean up amid the fallout.
Biden made the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-declares-trump-supporters-are-garbage">remark</a> while speaking on a campaign call Tuesday night about an insult comedian who performed at a Trump rally over the weekend who called Puerto Rico &#8220;garbage&#8221;.
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”

In the midst of the devastation, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has taken some criticism over funds set aside through another program over the last several years to help cover the astronomical costs of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/karine-jean-pierre-falsely-claims-fema-is-not-funding-migrant-resettlement-amid-hurricane-helene" target="_blank" rel="noopener">migrant resettlement</a> resulting from the Biden-Harris administration&#8217;s abject refusal to stop illegal immigrants at the southern border.
But as critics have pointed that out — and have also noted that several civilian aid operations have been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whistleblowers-accuse-fema-of-misappropriating-funds-leaving-first-responders-without-orders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">thwarted by FEMA</a> as they were trying to help — media and Biden-Harris surrogates have scrambled to run cover for the organization.
On ABC&#8217;s &#8220;This Week,&#8221; anchor George Stephanopoulos brought in FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell to defend the agency and the work it was doing — and she used some of her time to complain about the people criticizing FEMA&#8217;s response to the still unfolding crisis in the southeastern United States.
&#8220;It&#8217;s frankly ridiculous and just plain false,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This kind of rhetoric is not helpful to people. You know it&#8217;s really a shame that we&#8217;re putting politics ahead of helping people — and that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re here to do. We&#8217;ve had the complete support of the state. We&#8217;ve had the local officials helping to push back on this dangerous — truly dangerous — narrative that is creating this fear of trying to reach out and help us or to register for help. You know, people need resources, and we need them to get into the system. And it&#8217;s just, you know, a shame that people are sitting home on their comfortable couches while we have thousands of people here on the ground that have left their own families to be able to help those in need.&#8221;
What Criswell did not mention was the fact that a number of the criticisms had come from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whistleblowers-accuse-fema-of-misappropriating-funds-leaving-first-responders-without-orders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">civilian volunteers</a> on the ground in hurricane-ravaged areas who had been trying to get help to those who needed at and got tangled up in red tape instead.

Anchor Kristen Welker tried a similar approach with Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), but he made it clear he was having none of that.
Welker argued that some were falling for narratives like &#8220;the idea that FEMA funds are being redirected to migrants which is not true.&#8221;
&#8220;It is true, that FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security have been spending billions of dollars on migrants,&#8221; Cotton shot back. &#8220;We just passed a short term spending bill, very common for the [Biden &#8211; Harris] administration to come and ask for permission to move money between funds, especially to prepare for emergencies.&#8221;
&#8220;This administration seems to have no problem finding money when they want to spend it on their priorities. [Illegals] When they need 100s of billions of dollars to pay off student loans for graduate students and gender studies programs, they somehow find it,&#8221; Cotton continued. &#8220;When it&#8217;s trying to get helicopters to deliver food and water and cellular service and life saving medicine into these mountain valleys, they somehow can&#8217;t seem to find the money.&#8221;

Buttigieg, unsurprisingly, ran with the same talking point as the others — namely that FEMA was fine, everything was fine, and the real damage was being done by the people who dared to question the administration&#8217;s response in any way.
&#8220;[Misinformation] can have a real cost for people on the ground,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If you look at what’s going on online, a lot of it seems to be driven by politics and that is actively harming and disrupting the process of getting back to normal.&#8221;

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) torched left-wing NBC News host Kristen Welker on Sunday for suggesting that former President Donald Trump was making false claims about the Biden-Harris administration&#8217;s disastrous response to Hurricane Helene.
Cotton fielded the activist-minded questions from Welker Sunday on NBC News&#8217; &#8220;Meet The Press&#8221; while talking about FEMA funds and the staggering amount of money that the administration has given to illegal aliens.
&#8220;Trump has made, quite frankly, a series of baseless claims, including that the Biden administration is intentionally withholding aid from areas where Republicans live, also saying that FEMA funds are being redirected to migrants.&#8221;
&#8220;Both those claims have been debunked,&#8221; she claimed. &#8220;They&#8217;re false.&#8221;
When asked why Trump was &#8220;confusing people,” Cotton fired back: &#8220;I don&#8217;t think he&#8217;s confusing anyone. I think the administration did get caught flat-footed here and that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been proven to be over-matched by events again.&#8221;
He said that the Biden-Harris administration failed by not activating the military immediately to assist with rescue operations, which led to hundreds of people being killed.

So it is the case that the administration itself, the secretary who oversees FEMA, said there&#8217;s not enough money left in the fund. And they have been spending billions of dollars for the last four years to move migrants from our border, to put them up in hotels, and give them room service and maids. That&#8217;s simply a fact.&#8221;
When Welker sought to defend the administration by claiming that the money was not from disaster relief, Cotton fired back: &#8220;It is true that FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security have been spending billions of dollars on migrants.&#8221;
&#8220;Now, I understand some people say they&#8217;re separate funds, but we just passed a short-term spending bill,&#8221; Cotton said. &#8220;It&#8217;s very common for the administration to come and ask for permission to move money between funds, especially to prepare for emergencies.&#8221;
&#8220;And, second, I would note that this administration seems to have no problem finding money when they want to spend it on their priorities,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;When they need hundreds of billions of dollars to pay off student loans for graduate students in gender studies programs they somehow find it. When it&#8217;s trying to get helicopters to deliver food and water and cellular service and life-saving medicine into these mountain valleys, they somehow can&#8217;t seem to find the money.&#8221;

Cotton made the remarks during a Sunday interview on CBS News&#8217; &#8220;Face The Nation&#8221; while discussing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ice-data-show-hundreds-of-thousands-of-illegal-aliens-in-u-s-are-serious-criminals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new numbers</a> that were released last week by federal immigration officials about the number of illegal aliens in the U.S. who have been convicted of specific crimes.
&#8220;I just want to say, the chaos that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have unleashed across this world isn&#8217;t limited to the other side of the world. It happens right here,&#8221; Cotton said. &#8220;The administration just acknowledged that they released more than 13,000 convicted murderers who illegally entered this country. More than 15,000 convicted sex offenders.&#8221;
&#8220;That&#8217;s 28,000 rapists and murderers who illegally entered our country who Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have let roam our streets,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;That&#8217;s the kind of chaos that they have unleashed for the last four years, and that Donald Trump will put an end to.&#8221;
Fill-in host Robert Costa immediately changed the subject, pivoting to former President Donald Trump not wanting to engage in any further debates with Harris.

Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tom-cotton" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tom Cotton</a> (R-AR) said during an interview over the weekend that Israel needed to finish off Hezbollah for good, even if it means invading southern Lebanon.
The senator made the remarks during a Sunday interview on CBS News&#8217; &#8220;Face The Nation&#8221; while discussing the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a targeted airstrike late last week.
&#8220;I&#8217;m not sure that Israel is expanding the war so much as it is trying to end the war. I think it&#8217;s important to stress just sort of how huge a blow the last two weeks have been against Hezbollah,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Israel has absolutely devastated the entire leadership structure of Hezbollah &#8212; whether it&#8217;s at the attacks that came just late last week, killing not only Hassan Nasrallah and all the other leaders, or some of their other actions, or hitting their weapons depots and manufacturing sites in Syria. Now is not the time for a ceasefire or to de-escalate, as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris want.&#8221;
&#8220;Hezbollah is on its knees,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The United States should help Israel drive Hezbollah to the mat and choke it out and finish it off once and for all. That means for the first time in decades, Iran would be exposed on its flanks with no terror proxy capable of devastating Israel or our troops and our friends in the region. That&#8217;s what we should do. Not demand that we have a cease fire. De-escalate at a time when Israel is trying to win. We should let Israel win.&#8221;

When asked if he would support Israel invading southern Lebanon to push Hezbollah back to create a buffer zone so Israeli civilians can return to their homes, he said yes.
&#8220;If that&#8217;s what Israel needs to do to eliminate the remnants of Hezbollah&#8217;s leadership and its arsenal, then yes, of course,&#8221; he said.
Cotton also addressed the hundreds of attacks that U.S. forces have faced in the region over the last year from Iranian-backed terrorist groups, saying that it was a direct result of the Biden-Harris administration&#8217;s weakness.
&#8220;There&#8217;s been continued attacks on us again &#8212; just like we should support Israel in striking back against these terrorists, we should be striking back harder again,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But that&#8217;s not Kamala Harris and Joe Biden&#8217;s policy. From the very beginning, they&#8217;ve appeased and conciliated the ayatollahs. Kamala Harris, for instance, opposed Donald Trump&#8217;s strike that killed Iran&#8217;s terrorist mastermind in 2020.&#8221;
&#8220;Over the last four years, they&#8217;ve given away tens of billions of dollars in sanctions relief,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;They&#8217;ve looked the other way as Iran violates sanctions. They&#8217;ve continually put more pressure on Israel than they put on Iran&#8217;s terrorist proxy. That&#8217;s why Kamala Harris is the Ayatollah&#8217;s handpicked candidate, and while the ayatollahs are hacking into Donald Trump&#8217;s campaign and trying to kill him.&#8221;
