Parents need to earn $400,000 each year to afford children, according to “The View” panelist Sunny Hostin. Her absurd <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=953345053913270">claim</a> made headlines last week because it’s ridiculous, but the practice of overinflating these numbers is nothing new. For years we’ve been inundated with claims about how much it really costs to raise kids. Some research says from birth to age 18, on average, parents will spend upwards of $250,000 taking their newborn into adulthood.
So how much is it, really? And more importantly: Is it worth it?
Hostin, who has two children, was reacting to Daily Wire host Isabel Brown making what should not have been a radical statement. Brown <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/i-told-gen-z-to-get-married-and-have-kids-the-view-lost-its-mind">said</a>, “If you’re not encouraging your children to grow up … get married and have kids — more kids than they can afford, before they think they’re ready, it is high time to start.”
This statement couldn’t be more important at a time when over half of the world’s countries now have fertility rates below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman. It’s a problem that hits close to home. By 2030, nearly 45% of American women aged 25-44 are projected to be single and childless.
The media keep pushing stories about <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-viral-i-regret-my-kids-trend-is-getting-one-big-thing-wrong">regretful parents</a>, happy singles, and how “irresponsible” it is to have kids. They say it’s too expensive. But those of us with lots of kids, and way less money than Sunny Hostin, are here to say, no, it’s not.
As a regular middle class mom of five surrounded by other middle class friends and family in a very typical suburban town, I can tell you that most people I know don’t have a $400,000 income, but they do have kids. Most are homeowners with two cars who take annual vacations and whose children are involved in sports. Some of the wealthier friends have vacation homes, while some of those less well-off or single parents may rent their homes or do staycations instead.
My personal experience almost certainly differs from Hostin’s. However, I think most parents aren’t really spending $250,000 per child. These numbers are totally bogus.
A 2022 <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Brookings_Cost-to-raise-a-child_inflation-adjusted-2.pdf">report</a> from the Brookings Institution declared that a middle-income family with two children will spend approximately $310,605, adjusted for higher future inflation, to raise one child born in 2015 through age 17. A similar <a href="https://www.lendingtree.com/debt-consolidation/raising-a-child-study/">study</a> put out by LendingTree last year had comparable findings, estimating the average annual cost to be $29,419, or a total of $297,674 for 18 years of parenting. None of these estimates includes the cost of college, which is a whole other issue.
The studies all note the difference between raising a child in a high cost of living area, such as Hawaii, and a low cost of living area, such as Mississippi. But they claim these numbers represent the average. As someone living in a mid-range area where a parent could expect to pay somewhere in the mid-range for child-raising, all I can say is, huh?
LendingTree broke down its cost analysis by category, taking into consideration factors including rent, groceries, transportation, health insurance, daycare, and apparel. The chart lays out the “bare-bones cost of raising [a] small child in [the] U.S.” and allots an amount for each category. But there’s one thing it fails to mention, namely that you’d be spending some amount of money on rent, food, and other essentials even if you didn’t have children. Also, parents spend their money differently than non-parents.
These studies assume that parents are spending, let’s say, $1,000 dollars of clothing per year for themselves and then $500 per child. With that rationale, adding two children to the household would increase total apparel expenditures to $2,000, right? But that’s oversimplifying the reality of life. Being a parent is a constant sacrifice of self, a rebalancing of priorities and goals. In practice, moms are more likely to take that whole $1,000 budget and spend 80% of it on their kids and 20% on themselves. Instead of increasing the budget, they will adjust where the money is going. And each child gets cheaper when you can use hand-me-downs.
When I was single and when I was married without kids, my diaper budget was $0. It increased with each child, forcing me to make cuts in other areas. Maybe it meant fewer dinners out or learning that home pedicures are less luxurious but more affordable. Now that my youngest twins are almost 5, our diaper budget is back to $0. Sounds like it’s time to schedule a pedicure.
The point is that families absorb new costs by adjusting others. That’s not to say that children don’t cost anything; my grocery bill would beg to differ. But these estimates are way off. The LendingTree report says “transportation costs” are $4,383 per year, which equals around $365 per month. An adult without children may not be spending her funds on a minivan, but she is just as likely to have a car payment.
The cost of raising kids is really what you make it. 
In a similar way, housing costs can become exorbitant if a family of seven opts to live in a six-bedroom house so everyone can have their own space. But if they’re like most of America, they use the high cost of real estate as another opportunity to humble themselves. My husband and I bought our first home, our three-bedroom, 1,500-square-foot starter home, one year after we married and before we had any children. Sixteen years and five kids later, we are still here in this little house. 
Our children share rooms with bunk beds and cram together on the couch so we can watch movies together. We all share a bathroom and stick to a shower schedule. Our rambling old van is not pretty, but it’s paid off. Our household income is nowhere near $400,000. I am not spending $150,000 per year ($30,000 times five kids) on these lovely little people I’m raising. Sunny Hostin would be flabbergasted.
Compared to a family with two children, the cost per child goes up if you only have one child (by 27%) and goes down per child (by 24%) once you have three or more, according to a Department of Agriculture <a href="https://www.usda.gov/about-usda/news/blog/cost-raising-child">report</a> in 2017. The report notes that this is because children can share bedrooms, clothing, and family responsibilities (fire the cleaning lady and assign some chores to your older kids!). Older children can babysit the younger ones. It’s interesting that this report hasn’t been updated in almost a decade.
Ultimately, it’s impossible to come up with a single number of what it costs to raise a child. The answer is, it depends. It depends on a family’s goals and values, on whether they buy their Nikes brand new or shop at thrift stores, on whether they’re an Aldi family or Whole Foods shoppers. It depends on whether or not one parent stays home with the kids to cut out the daycare fees. 
There are ways to save and spend at every income level, and children can be naturally absorbed into that by give and take in different areas. Children are not inherently expensive. For centuries people have been having far more kids with far less money and somehow making it work.
Isabel Brown was right. Our message to our children should be to have more kids than seems reasonable, before they feel ready. Not just because the future of humanity depends on it, but also because it’s worth every sacrifice.

Daily Wire host Isabel Brown escalated her ongoing feud with The View this week, issuing a direct challenge to co-host Sara Haines after the ABC personality took fresh shots at her on the show’s podcast, Behind the Table.
The dispute traces back to Brown’s remarks at CPAC, where she encouraged young women to prioritize marriage and motherhood if they feel called to it, comments that quickly drew backlash from The View panel.

Speaking on Behind the Table, The View’s podcast, Haines continued speaking against Brown, saying,  “I love babies, I love being married,” before adding that “there’s so much pressure in this world on women to define themselves by if they’re married and … if they have babies.” She pointed to friends who struggled to find partners or faced fertility challenges — listing gay couples in that category — arguing that those women “matter” just as much and should not feel diminished.
Haines also dismissed the reaction to the original segment from the show, saying she “refuse[d] to read it,” and suggesting Brown had “misconstrued” her comments. The co-host emphasized that modern feminism is about choice, whether that means marriage and children or not, and warned against what she sees as a cultural push back toward defining women primarily through family roles.
Brown, however, sharply rejected that framing, accusing Haines of distorting her views from the outset. “I never said that your entire worth is wrapped up in your ovaries,” she said, pushing back on claims that she reduces women to motherhood.
Instead, Brown argued that the cultural message coming from outlets like The View has had real consequences. “It is precisely because of the cultural programming that you guys are now peddling … by telling women not to prioritize getting married and having children,” Brown contends, that a generation of women is now “realizing … this might not get to be a part of my life anymore.”
She went further, directly challenging Haines’ argument about overpopulation. “We’re not facing an overpopulation crisis,” Brown said. “We are actually facing a dramatic underpopulation crisis across two thirds of the world’s population.”
Brown also drew a stark generational contrast, noting that Haines is “20 years older” and pointing to women later in life who regret not prioritizing family earlier. “You’re listening to all of these other women … and they’re thinking they missed the boat,” she said, arguing that biology ultimately sets limits many women are not being warned about.
But Brown’s response did not stop at policy or culture, it took on a more spiritual dimension, particularly as the exchange unfolded during Holy Week.
“Yes, I do believe that it is not coincidental whatsoever that the most blatantly disgusting attack on the family we’ve seen in the mainstream media happened during Holy Week,” Brown said, framing the backlash as part of a broader moral struggle. “There are forces at play all around us … weighing in on matters of good and evil.”
That theme echoes Brown’s earlier response to The View, where she accused the hosts of “shrieking like demons” at the idea of encouraging young women to have children and argued that the family remains the “strongest threat to evil” in the world. 
At the same time, Brown positioned herself as advocating not for restriction, but prioritization, particularly for younger women. “There’s nothing anti-woman … about telling young women you should make it a priority … so that you don’t miss the window,” she said.
That framing carried into a separate post accompanying her video response, where Brown struck a more measured tone. “I genuinely harbor no ill will toward any of these women — I’ve never even met any of them!! — but do remain utterly stumped at their lack of social awareness,” she wrote, arguing that the reaction to The View’s segment reflected broader public discomfort with attacks on family and motherhood.
She also called out the show’s refusal to host a direct exchange, “The View is refusing to host an honest conversation between us,” Brown wrote, adding that it was “disappointing, really, for a show that’s supposed to be about multiple ‘View’points.” Noting that The View had <a href="https://ew.com/isabel-brown-alleges-the-view-declined-request-defend-herself-on-air-11940327">declined to host her</a>, she issued a fresh, direct invitation. “I am extending a genuine, honest invite to you to come on my show,” Brown said, offering to fly Haines to Nashville for a “real conversation” about women, family, and the future. “The show The View is supposed to be about different points of view,” she added. “Obviously, that’s not happening.”
She closed her post on a note reflecting the season in which the debate is unfolding: “God bless you, and happy Easter.”
The increasing back-and-forth underscores a deeper cultural divide, one that extends beyond television segments and into questions of faith, family, and the direction of modern feminism. As the debate intensifies, Brown is making clear she wants that conversation face-to-face.

I spent the day watching more of “The View” than I ever have before in my life.
Turns out, the insufferable hosts of this failing network show, on Disney-owned ABC, took it upon themselves to spend seven uninterrupted minutes on national television <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/daily-wire-host-fires-back-after-the-view-melts-down-over-her-support-for-young-families?author=Virginia+Kruta&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=2&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Daily+Wire+Host+Fires+Back+After+%E2%80%98The+View%E2%80%99+Melts+Down+Over+Her+Support+For+Young+Families">bashing me</a> by name, and anyone else with the audacity to promote marriage and parenthood to Gen Z.
I’ve been a content creator since 2019, covering some of the most contentious issues in the American culture war, and I’ve gotta be honest: I never thought this, my most wholesome, pro-America take, would be the thing I’d get attacked for.
Last week, I joined a panel of incredible women on stage at CPAC to discuss the importance of the American family, and was asked specifically to talk about what it’s going to take to save America. My answer was one <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/daily-wire-host-torches-the-view-over-claim-only-rich-women-can-afford-kids?author=Virginia+Kruta&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Daily+Wire+Host+Torches+%E2%80%98The+View%E2%80%99+Over+Claim+Only+Rich+Women+Can+Afford+Kids">I often repeat</a> in speeches or interviews, and reflects a simple timeless truth — we must renew the importance of the family as the cornerstone of society again to a generation that’s being lied to about it. Addressing a crowd older than myself, I said this:

Before long, Whoopi Goldberg &amp; company would be furious and virtually foaming at the mouth over the very idea that I promote marriage and motherhood to my generation, and dedicated an entire segment of everyone’s favorite “View-erless” show to launch an attack. 
The “anti-family” segment on &#8220;The View&#8221; opened with Whoopi predictably labeling me a racist – because, clearly, I must only want more white people to have children as a white woman myself. That’s obviously not true. 
But it’s a curious criticism coming from Whoopi Goldberg, an ardent supporter of the abortion industry, which grew in America specifically as a way to kill black babies in the womb at the hands of renowned and infamous eugenicist Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood.
In 2022, Black women made up about 40 % of all abortions reported in the U.S. – in New York City today, as Whoopi Goldberg runs her mouth on television from the heart of Manhattan, you are more likely to be aborted as a black baby than you are to be born… all in the name of racial progress and equity, right?
Let me be clear: the only racial component to any of this is the continued desire by the abortion industry to convince black women it’s more empowering to end the lives of their children than to give birth to them.
Moving through the panel, Sara Haines spent her time on air reminding viewers that having kids is a choice. That’s true. But what about my choice, and that of literally billions of other women around the world, to get married and have children? The very notion is seemingly unfathomable to the women on this miserable panel.
In other words, if you make the choice to “want” kids – it’s the wrong choice. You’re less of a woman. You aren’t a feminist. You don’t support equality. You deserve to be publicly SHAMED, which is exactly what they proceed to do to me.
Ironically, every woman but one around that table has children of their own. And every one of them is either in a long-term relationship or has been married. They somehow make it work as working moms. They have had the courage to commit their lives to someone they love. They get to snuggle their babies at the end of a long day of work — so, why isn’t it worth pursuing for you?
For the rest of the segment, all of the hosts collectively wasted air throwing out every anti-natalist argument to see what would stick.
They lied, saying having children is somehow beneath women, that we as a sex (amazing, how suddenly we can all define woman, right?) have come “too far” to still be sucked into the innate, natural, instinctual desire to have a beautiful baby and share your life with someone.
They lied, claiming childcare costs a whopping $400,000 a year, so must be financially inaccessible to anyone outside of the 1% of the 1%. For the record, it costs about $10,000-$15,000 on average a year… but I wouldn’t expect a woman screaming at me in an $800 jacket to know.
They lied, saying if you want a baby you must be in an abusive, oppressive marriage to an evil, misogynistic man–and someone ought to help you escape with a divorce attorney. To clarify: I love my husband, and no one is more supportive of my motherhood journey or my career.
They lied, saying that I must not understand how tough having kids are because I have a mere one-year-old, who “just sleeps all day.” News to me, after over a year of my life not sleeping all the way through the night.
They lied, saying that breastfeeding ruins your boobs. I know Whitney Cummings remains deeply concerned about my breasts – after 11 months of breastfeeding my daughter, they’re doing just fine.
They lied, of course, to claim we’re facing an overpopulation crisis, which is objectively the opposite of our current reality. In fact, over half of the world’s countries and areas now have fertility rates below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman. These countries represent over two-thirds of the global population, and that number is expected to increase to over 90% by the end of this century.
By 2030, nearly 45% of American women aged 25-44 are projected to be single and childless.
It’s not hard to understand why – virtually every single influencer, television show, movie, college professor, woke pastor, politician, and mainstream media outlet today is dedicating massive air time to trying to convince you NOT to have kids.
Why? Because they want you miserable and lonely. They are intentionally seeking to brainwash you into what my friend &amp; fellow mom Allie Beth Stuckey calls “Toxic Empathy,” so you think you&#8217;re a better person and more compassionate for essentially hating children.
In fact, getting married and having kids is better for everyone in the long term. One study found that having kids increases your wealth by 23% throughout your life. Young married moms are three times happier than their unmarried, childless counterparts. Statistically, married, religious couples with children have the most satisfying intimate lives.
Most importantly, the joy and purpose we experience in sharing our lives with our children is unparalleled anywhere else in our often empty and meaningless society.
How dare we want that for the next generation, right?
I further find no coincidence that this segment aired this week at the start to Holy Week as we walk toward Christ’s Passion on the cross this Friday and His resurrection into heaven on Easter Sunday. The family is the most beautiful example we have of God’s perfect design for humanity. His love is exemplified for us as we lay down our lives for one another, humbling ourselves to serve our spouses and our children. The family, as a result, presents an unparalleled threat to the demonic forces of evil and darkness in our world.
St. John Paul II said during his tenure as Pope, “As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live,” and “The future of humanity passes by way of the family.”
&#8220;The View’s&#8221; attack on the family and those promoting it is just the latest example of spiritual warfare being waged against what is good and true and beautiful, and we must remain deeply committed to sharing the timeless truth of God even in today’s culture.
Mother Teresa once famously said, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” These words have always been meaningful to me, but certainly have packed a huge gut punch this week as I reflect on the unexpected backlash to such a simple message I shared on stage last week.
It’s a call to action for all of us to ponder, and determine what course we will walk as we work to build our own American Dream as a generation among Gen Z.
The truth is, there’s no better advertisement for the joy of a God-centered marriage than the alternative being blast on full display from the set of &#8220;The View&#8221; – would you rather live among the misery, contempt, and judgment of these angry middle aged women, or pursue purpose and fulfillment in marriage and motherhood while you can?
So, thanks to the ladies of &#8220;The View&#8221; for giving me another opportunity to address this issue. In case it wasn’t clear, I stand by everything I said at CPAC. And in case you’re still unsure at this point, let me reiterate:
Have the courage to fall in love, get married, and make more babies.
It’s good for the world, and even better for you.

Brown joined host — and mother of nine children with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy — Rachel Campos-Duffy, on Tuesday&#8217;s broadcast of &#8220;Fox &amp; Friends,&#8221; where she pointed out several of the fallacies in the claims made by the ladies on ABC&#8217;s daytime talk show.

Campos-Duffy opened the segment by asking for Brown&#8217;s reaction to the &#8220;peak elitism&#8221; exhibited by the hosts of &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/daily-wire-host-fires-back-after-the-view-melts-down-over-her-support-for-young-families">The View</a>,&#8221; who had essentially claimed that only rich people could truly afford to have children.
Brown began by pointing out that the outrage had been directed at a short clip of a much broader conversation that was part of a panel discussion for the past weekend&#8217;s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), saying, &#8220;I never expected that that was going to be my Monday. That clip that they reacted to &#8230; was a very short two seconds of the greater conversation that we were having, clearly taken wildly out of context and with the intention to continue pushing the anti-family propaganda on the women of our generation.&#8221;
She went on to argue that the women on &#8220;The View,&#8221; all of whom have children and are well off, were &#8220;out of touch&#8221; when it came to the average American woman and her family decisions.
&#8220;Elitism is the perfect word to describe just how out of touch these women really are,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Because most of them are married with children and worth millions upon millions of dollars — but they have the audacity to scream at you, like Sunny Hostin did yesterday, wearing an $800 jacket and lying to you, saying that childcare costs $400,000 per year. If that were the case, no one would be able to afford children.&#8221;
Brown, who has one child, went on to say that her real concern was cohost Whoopi Goldberg and the fact that she&#8217;d wrapped up the segment by scolding, &#8220;&#8216;Isabel, how dare you tell women to want to have children, if you&#8217;re saying that, I&#8217;m going to send you back to the past.&#8217; So it&#8217;s always about choice for these people, until that choice is the beauty and the joy and the purpose of marriage and motherhood, which of course we should be encouraging people to strive for.&#8221;
Brown and Campos-Duffy went on to discuss studies showing that, by far, the happiest people are women who have embraced marriage and motherhood — especially those who have made career sacrifices to ensure that their families come first.
&#8220;This is something that the left doesn&#8217;t want us to talk about,&#8221; Campos-Duffy said, arguing that they saw the rise of young families as a threat.
&#8220;We&#8217;re claiming that we live in the most empowered time for women in all of human history, and yet the only level of empowerment that they are willing to give you is if you forgo committing your life to your best friend and bringing new life into the world through the miracle of pregnancy and motherhood,&#8221; Brown agreed.

&#8220;I’d like to thank the women of @TheView for showing their truest, darkest colors today: they’re literally shrieking like demons at the thought of encouraging young women to have children. PS &#8211; &#8216;stupidest&#8217; isn&#8217;t a real word,&#8221; Brown posted.
&#8220;They want you to hate happy, healthy, fulfilled young people with kids. Even more disturbingly, they want you to hate babies so much that you never want them in the first place. Their response to my encouragement for Gen Z women to get married and have kids? &#8216;You&#8217;re telling people to have as many babies as they want to? Again I&#8217;m going to send you back into the past,'&#8221; Brown continued. &#8220;In other words, *wanting* a baby literally is not a choice as a so-called &#8217;empowered&#8217; woman in 2026.&#8221;
Brown doubled down, saying that she believed the family was the &#8220;strongest threat to evil&#8221; in the world, and adding, &#8220;Again, I reiterate: HAVE THE COURAGE to get married and have a beautiful family. Your life will be better because of it.&#8221;
After promising to further address the topic — and the comments from &#8220;The View&#8221; — on her next Daily Wire show, Brown shared the full segment from the ABC midday talk show: &#8220;If you just can&#8217;t help yourself in the meantime &amp; want to grab some popcorn — here&#8217;s the whole segment of 5 grown women screeching about how I am the &#8220;stupidest&#8221; person on the Internet, who should divorce my husband, and probably never should have become a mom in the first place. Misery sure loves projection, doesn&#8217;t it?&#8221;

Whoopi Goldberg opened the segment with a clip of Brown, speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), encouraging young women to get married and have children — and she and her cohosts immediately claimed that Brown was promoting backward thinking.
Goldberg began by claiming that women of color had been criticized in the past for having too many children, saying they were the reason that government assistance programs were getting cut.
Cohost Sara Haines argued that by promoting traditional families, Brown was reducing women to only the value of their reproductive organs: &#8220;The whole women&#8217;s movement was not about bucking the trend of staying at home or loving tradition. It was giving women a choice to do what they wanted. And that&#8217;s what this is too. Marriage, children. It&#8217;s a choice.&#8221;
&#8220;The fact we keep putting this on women, that their only worth in society, politics, policy is if they produce a baby or have a husband is the stupidest, most old-fashioned thing!&#8221; Haines continued. &#8220;We have come too far! The world has over 8 billion people! We no longer need to force people to procreate and pump out babies! We have arrived here! Women now and girls now have a choice!&#8221;
Ana Navarro also weighed in, ignoring the fact that Brown had been clear about women getting married prior to starting families and complaining that no one was expecting men to step up and be responsible for all the babies.
&#8220;If you&#8217;re not paying my bills, you don&#8217;t get to tell me what I do with my uterus,&#8221; she declared.
Cohost Sunny Hostin went a different direction entirely, claiming that Brown&#8217;s position was untenable primarily because of President Donald Trump. Blaming him for the fact that child care was too expensive for most working families, Hostin argued that women should think twice before following her advice.
Goldberg followed right behind, arguing that red states were enacting laws that were not encouraging women to do anything other than &#8220;flee&#8221; from them: &#8220;You&#8217;re telling people to have as many babies as they want to? Again I&#8217;m going to send you back into the past.&#8221;

After first asserting that the United States was manipulating the numbers to hide the number of American troops who were already deployed to the Middle East and the number of those who had been hurt or killed, Goldberg asserted that there was still no plan in place to bring Operation Epic Fury to an end.
&#8220;At this point, at this point, I want them to stop what they&#8217;re doing. They are sending people in to die. They are sending people in to die and I&#8217;m surprised because Hegseth served,&#8221; Goldberg said, suggesting that because American troops were in harm&#8217;s way, Hegseth could not possibly have planned the operation.
&#8220;Yes, he did,&#8221; Sunny Hostin agreed.
&#8220;He served. He should know what —&#8221; Goldberg said.
Cohost Abby Huntsman added, &#8220;He should know better than anybody.&#8221;
&#8220;Yes, better than any body, but when you listen to [Hegseth] — Stop looking so angry! He should know more than anybody what it takes to be a soldier in our Army,&#8221; Goldberg explained, adding, &#8220;What it means when you send people in. When you send them in with a plan, it&#8217;s horrific. You send them in without a plan, you willy-nilly and you&#8217;re not explaining what&#8217;s going on.&#8221;
&#8220;Fathers, mothers, daughters, sisters, brothers, these are all our American citizens who are being asked to do this. And because, because of the way the military is, they will do what they&#8217;re asked to do,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;Damn it, I&#8217;d rather this were in the hands of people who actually cared about them enough to say, &#8216;I&#8217;m going to do everything I can for you to be not in a place where you could be killed.'&#8221;

Navarro responded on Monday&#8217;s broadcast to Trump&#8217;s message on Truth Social, where he had posted, &#8220;Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. The panel then pivoted to claim that the Trump administration viewed members of the military as &#8220;cannon fodder.&#8221;
Cohost Sara Haines said that anyone who waged war should keep the human cost in mind, and Goldberg immediately claimed that the Trump administration did not do that.
&#8220;They don&#8217;t have that feeling, because to them, we&#8217;re cannon fodder,&#8221; she claimed. &#8220;They don&#8217;t care, you know? It&#8217;s how — It&#8217;s why they — it&#8217;s how they also treat our vets. It tells you a lot. You&#8217;ve heard him talk about vets.&#8221;

Sunny Hostin, a former federal prosecutor, began her review by complaining that the president insists upon using the term &#8220;illegal&#8221; when referring to people who have entered the United States illegally.
&#8220;That saying that people are illegal, illegal aliens. That really matters,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We haven&#8217;t used that term for so long. Now it&#8217;s back in vogue. You are not illegal as a human being just because you&#8217;re undocumented, and so that for me, that felt dehumanizing to our immigrant population.&#8221;
Hostin then recalled a conversation from the day before — when Behar argued that Democrats should boycott the speech entirely to avoid giving Trump the appearance of legitimacy — and said that although she&#8217;d disagreed at the time, watching the president speak had changed her mind.
&#8220;Someone like Ilhan Omar, who fiercely is protective of Minnesotans and Somalians in particular, she gave him that moment that he wanted when the Democrats wouldn&#8217;t stand because he was calling people illegal aliens, they didn&#8217;t stand, and he called them crazy. They gave him all these moments,&#8221; Hostin complained. &#8220;They were used as props. It was disgusting.&#8221;

Sara Haines argued that she personally would rather have a law enforcement leader who was &#8220;serious and borderline boring,&#8221; complaining that he was partying instead of dealing with real issues like the upheaval in Mexico and the Secret Service-involved shooting at Mar-a-Lago.
&#8220;Right now the world doesn&#8217;t feel settled or stable, and you&#8217;ve got the head of the FBI, and the visual of chugging a beer in a locker room,&#8221; she added, arguing that he was not helping the administration to appear more &#8220;competent&#8221; and that the whole scenario was &#8220;a bit of an insult to the American people.&#8221;

Goldberg then pivoted to suggest that maybe the move had come at the behest of some in the FBI who felt that they would be better able to do their jobs if Patel was off doing something else.

The hyperbolic comparison came after the Bronx congresswoman made several statements over the weekend that spotlighted her ignorance of both world history and current U.S. foreign policy. The first was a statement she made criticizing Secretary of State Marco Rubio for claiming that horses and the idea of American &#8220;cowboys&#8221; were originally brought to the United States by Spanish explorers and conquistadors. Of course, Rubio was correct. And the second was a rambling, incoherent response to a question about whether or not American troops should defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.
Goldberg responded to the brouhaha regarding Ocasio-Cortez by playing a brief clip of Trump clearly saying &#8220;Iceland&#8221; when he meant to say &#8220;Greenland.&#8221;
&#8220;So, clearly &#8230;&#8221; she said, letting her voice trail off.
&#8220;My mother used to say, &#8216;Don&#8217;t spit up in the air, it comes back in your face,'&#8221; Behar added. &#8220;Okay? Check him out before you start attacking AOC, who, by the way, it sounded a little &#8216;homina, homina, homina,&#8217; but you know, compared to him it&#8217;s like MENSA.&#8221;
Guest Savannah Chrisley stepped in to defend the president, saying that his &#8220;mispronouncing a word&#8221; was a far cry from having no idea what a policy was or how to articulate it.
&#8220;[It&#8217;s] totally different than not knowing your position on Taiwan,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And what&#8217;s important is how you recover from something.&#8221;
Trump followed his gaffe by meeting with world leaders and discussing global affairs and American interests, while Ocasio-Cortez went to The New York Times to complain that conservatives were sharing unflattering clips of her saying exactly what she&#8217;d said.
&#8220;The recovery is what mattered, and AOC just didn&#8217;t have a recovery,&#8221; Chrisley said.
&#8220;But he does it over and over again,&#8221; Behar complained. &#8220;How about the quantity of times?&#8221;
Goldberg then interrupted to point out that Trump is the current president, which obviously made his verbal gaffes a bigger deal than AOC&#8217;s, but made no effort to explain why she&#8217;d been silent while former President Joe Biden — while in office — was often unable to complete a sentence without mumbling something unintelligible or saying something staffers would have to clean up later.
&#8220;My point is, I can take &#8216;homina, homina&#8217; from congresspeople and stuff, you don&#8217;t have your stuff together, that&#8217;s on you,&#8221; Goldberg declared. &#8220;Can&#8217;t take it from the guy who says he&#8217;s the leader of the free world.&#8221;

Haines suggested that people were just looking for scapegoats in the list of names recently connected to Epstein — some of whom, such as Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, were already dead.
&#8220;They dropped like 300 names and it&#8217;s like flood the zone because when you look in there, there&#8217;s people like Marilyn Monroe, who was dead &#8230; because a lot of the reasons your name can be mentioned are news articles, third party emails, contacts, again, wealthy, famous people often cross in professional and social circles, so that&#8217;s not the surprising part,&#8221; she said.
Despite defending Goldberg&#8217;s connection to Epstein as simply the result of &#8220;wealthy, famous people&#8221; traveling in similar orbits, it did not appear to occur to anyone at the table that Trump — who also qualifies as a &#8220;wealthy, famous&#8221; person — might be able to explain his own appearance in the Epstein documents the same way.
