Nothing says LGBT pride like a &#8220;Pride Match&#8221; featuring two countries that criminalize homosexuality.
Seattle will host a match between Egypt and Iran during the FIFA World Cup on June 26. The match is being designated as the official &#8220;<a href="https://www.seattlefwc26.org/committees/pride-match">Pride Match</a>&#8221; of the global tournament during Seattle&#8217;s Pride weekend. Egypt and Iran were selected over the weekend for the June 26 match at Lumen Field. The &#8220;Pride Match&#8221; isn&#8217;t affiliated or endorsed by FIFA.
That these two countries are the participants in the &#8220;Pride Match&#8221; seems satirical, considering the optics. Many have rightly concluded that you could not pick two worse teams to participate in such a match.
In Egypt, if someone is caught engaging in homosexual activity, it&#8217;s punishable with up to three years in prison, and they may be forced to pay a hefty fine, according to <a href="https://features.hrw.org/features/features/lgbt_laws/index.html?_gl=1*1ghvjda*_ga*MTMxOTE2ODExMy4xNzY1MjI4NjA1*_ga_8G7WH8R2Z8*czE3NjUyMjg2MDUkbzEkZzEkdDE3NjUyMjg2MjIkajQzJGwwJGgxODk0NDg2Mjg2">Human Rights Watch</a>.
In Iran, capital punishment remains the maximum penalty for homosexuality under the law, the organization also <a href="https://features.hrw.org/features/features/lgbt_laws/index.html?_gl=1*1ghvjda*_ga*MTMxOTE2ODExMy4xNzY1MjI4NjA1*_ga_8G7WH8R2Z8*czE3NjUyMjg2MDUkbzEkZzEkdDE3NjUyMjg2MjIkajQzJGwwJGgxODk0NDg2Mjg2">reports</a>.
Qatar, another country that outlaws homosexuality, is also scheduled to play in Seattle for the 2026 World Cup. Qatar hosted the renowned soccer tournament in 2022, where European teams came under fire for Pride-themed armbands. The bands ultimately weren&#8217;t worn during the matches after FIFA threatened to penalize players for wearing the symbolic accessory.

Seattle hosts one of the country&#8217;s largest Pride celebrations, so there is no doubt there will be a clash of cultures when Egypt, Iran, and Qatar come to town next June.
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson doesn&#8217;t seem too concerned about the participants in the &#8220;Pride Match.&#8221;
&#8220;With matches on Juneteenth and Pride, we get to show the world that in Seattle, everyone is welcome,&#8221; she said.
President Donald Trump criticized the new mayor last month during a World Cup press briefing in the Oval Office, calling Wilson&#8217;s policies more extreme than socialism.
&#8220;If we think there&#8217;s going to be a sign of any trouble, I would ask Gianni [FIFA President Gianni Infantino] to move that to a different city. We have a lot of cities that would love to have it number one, and will do it very safely,&#8221; Trump said.
Host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are all across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The first match is set for June 11 in Mexico City.

Seattle’s incoming mayor, Katie Wilson, will inherit a homelessness crisis that will define her ability to lead.
Seattle’s homeless population needs more than another round of aspirational promises. They need and deserve an operational reset grounded in compassion, accountability, and the courage to confront realities the city has failed to address for years.
She must replace press releases and ceremonial groundbreakings for housing that may never materialize with programs that support the homeless in reclaiming their lives from the grip of untreated mental illness, addiction, and dangerous encampments that have taken root throughout the city.
The scale of Seattle’s crisis is staggering. HUD’s 2024 Point-in-Time count identified <a href="https://kcrha.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Point-in-Time-Count-2024_King-County_final.pdf">16,868 people struggling with homelessness in King County</a> — 7,058 sheltered and 9,810 unsheltered — yet even this understates the emergency. It omits the thousands of K-12 students and their families couch-surfing or scraping together money for a few nights in a motel. And at the current 23% growth rate, Mayor Wilson will walk into office confronting a humanitarian emergency approaching 22,500 people.
Meanwhile, encampments proliferate, fentanyl deaths continue at historic highs, and families, businesses, and public workers bear the daily trauma of a system that is not working.
For years, Seattle has clung to the comforting illusion that more subsidized housing units alone will solve homelessness. Despite billions in public spending, housing pipelines remain clogged, construction timelines stretch into decades, and operating costs soar.
But for the majority of those living unsheltered — 78% of whom are struggling with serious mental illness or addiction — homelessness is not merely a housing shortage. It is the downstream consequence of untreated disease.
Often further complicating their illnesses is a condition called anosognosia that prevents them from recognizing their own illness. Consequently, they decline help not because they choose the street, but because their minds cannot see another path.
The mayor must change this trajectory.
If she intends to succeed where past administrations have failed, she must look to the <a href="https://www.discovery.org/m/securepdfs/2025/11/Local-Jurisdictions-Leverage-Homelessness-Reforms.pdf">Discovery Institute’s new report</a>, which details exactly how cities can harness forthcoming federal reforms to drive real results. 
Her reset must include:
<h3>1. Prioritize transitional and treatment-based recovery models</h3>
Seattle must stop investing disproportionately in permanent supportive housing that takes years to build and rarely addresses root causes. It must instead prioritize transitional recovery housing that is staffed with clinicians, case managers, and vocational supports, and must require engagement in these services as a condition of stay.
<h3>2. Partner with high-performing recovery organizations</h3>
Non-profits such as We Heart Seattle and Union Gospel Mission Rescue Missions have a great track record in helping individuals transition to stability. These organizations know how to walk with people through trauma, detoxification, relapse, and rebuilding. Make these organizations central to the city’s strategy — not an afterthought.
<h3>3. Empower and deploy multidisciplinary “CARE+” outreach units</h3>
Combine mental health professionals, emergency responders, and trained law enforcement to intervene proactively, stabilize crises, and compel psychiatric or addiction evaluations when individuals pose clear risks to themselves or others. Washington’s Involuntary Treatment Act already provides necessary tools, but they must be used more consistently and, of course, humanely.
<h3>4. Enforce public health and safety laws to restore order while providing pathways to treatment</h3>
In City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, the Supreme Court affirmed that Seattle can ban public camping to restore order and safety for all residents. In tandem with this effort, the city must provide the homeless with restorative programs.
<h3>5. Demand performance, not platitudes, at every level of the system</h3>
Seattle must instill accountability at every level of the homeless system: from the individual, to the non-profit, to the government officials responsible for the homeless system.
It must measure outcomes and provide quarterly dashboards on those outcomes and the spending required to achieve those outcomes. Housing without treatment is a revolving door. Harm reduction without recovery is slow-motion abandonment. But it doesn’t have to stay this way.
Katie, you have the chance to lead Seattle into a future where compassion is not a slogan, but a force that restores people and the city they call home.
This is your moment. History will remember the mayor who chose courage over habit, transformation over stagnation. Seattle’s soul is waiting to be mended. Now is the time to lead the city there.

Seattle-based independent journalist Brandi Kruse declared on Wednesday that she is &#8220;living proof&#8221; that it&#8217;s possible to recover from Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) — and that she&#8217;s been &#8220;happier,&#8221; &#8220;healthier,&#8221; and even &#8220;more successful&#8221; since she did so.
Kruse joined President Donald Trump and a number of other guests for the White House&#8217;s roundtable discussion on Antifa and the Trump administration&#8217;s efforts to classify the militant organization as a domestic terror group, and she explained that her own experiences with Antifa in Seattle had ultimately led to her recovery from TDS.

&#8220;I was told by probably a dozen people not to tell you this,&#8221; she said to Trump. &#8220;I&#8217;m going to tell it to you anyway because it&#8217;s relevant to what we&#8217;re talking about. I&#8217;m living proof that you can recover from TDS.&#8221;
&#8220;I had strong ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ for probably eight years,&#8221; she admitted, and Trump began to smile. &#8220;It&#8217;s the — this is one of the reasons I recovered from it. And by the way, it&#8217;s much better to not have TDS. I&#8217;m happier, I&#8217;m healthier, more successful, I even think I got a little more attractive after I got rid of my Trump Derangement Syndrome.&#8221;
Laughs came from all around the table at that last comment, and then Kruse pivoted to address the media outlets in the room and the reason she was there: &#8220;Frankly, I could not care any less what any of you have to say about this meeting. Could not care any less. We&#8217;re not here for you. I&#8217;m not here to convince any of you that Antifa is a real thing, because if you have not come to that conclusion by now, you are never going to come to that conclusion because you don&#8217;t want to see it.&#8221;

She went on to predict that they&#8217;d go out and report that the meeting was little more than &#8220;a bunch of right-wing, conservative influencers&#8221; who were chasing clout and social media followers.
&#8220;I was one of you,&#8221; she reminded them, noting that she&#8217;d been a television reporter on a mainstream media network, and she&#8217;d still been roughed up by Antifa rioters.
&#8220;When I saw, after all those years, that the media wouldn&#8217;t be honest about what was happening, that Democratic politicians wouldn&#8217;t be honest about what was happening, I thought, well, gosh, if they&#8217;re not being honest about that, maybe they&#8217;re not being honest about President Trump either. And it opened my mind to just looking at things as they were — and now I find you quite funny, actually,&#8221; she concluded, prompting more laughs from around the room.

President Donald Trump hosted a roundtable discussion at the White House with journalists impacted by violence from Antifa, a far-left group recently designated as a domestic terrorist organization by the president.
The decentralized group is most known for instigating violence and chaos at major protests, including anti-ICE protests in Portland, Oregon, which led the Trump administration to deploy the National Guard to the city. Currently, that order is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-blocks-trump-from-sending-out-of-state-national-guard-troops-to-oregon">blocked</a> by United States District Judge Karin J. Immergut at the time of this writing.
“The epidemic of left-wing violence and Antifa-inspired terror has been escalating for nearly a decade,” Trump said on Wednesday. “These are agitators, anarchists, and they’re paid,” he later added.
Conservative journalists and personalities, including Andy Ngo, Nick Sortor, Katie Daviscourt, Julio Rosas, Brandi Kruse, Savanah Hernandez, and Jack Posobiec, joined the roundtable with Trump administration officials.
“The Biden administration let them commit these crimes with total impunity for years,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said, adding that “weak Democrats have turned a blind eye to their actions.”
Bondi vowed to “destroy the entire organization from top to bottom,” saying they will use a similar approach to how they crack down on drug cartels.

FBI Director Kash Patel said that “they are harming everyday citizens in every single one of our communities.”
“We will arrest every single one of them,” Patel insisted, adding that “the American people deserve law and order.”
Kruse, a Seattle-based reporter, said that one of the most significant issues the president addressed was “acknowledging that Antifa is a real thing.”
“Once you take the mask off, they’re nothing,” Kruse said, later asking for a “full court press to dismantle Antifa once and for all.” She added that the investigators should look into the movement of potential criminals between Portland and Seattle.
Ngo described numerous times where he was attacked by Antifa activists, including when he was severely choked, noting how the group is “decentralized, autonomous, and they operate on deception.”
“I think the DOJ could look at federal conspiracy charges,” he added.
Rosas said that “the American people deserve to know what’s happening in these situations.”
“It’s a long time coming,” Daviscourt said regarding the terrorist group designation, saying that Antifa “believes that violence is justified by any means necessary.” Daviscourt recently suffered a black eye as a result of an assault while covering the group.
On Tuesday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said there are “undercover” efforts underway in the Lone Star State to take down “leftist terror cells.”
“Leftist political terrorism is a clear and present danger. Corrupted ideologies like transgenderism and Antifa are a cancer on our culture and have unleashed their deranged and drugged-up foot soldiers on the American people,” Paxton said in a news release.
“The martyrdom of Charlie Kirk marks a turning point in America. There can be no compromise with those who want us dead. To that end, I have directed my office to continue its efforts to identify, investigate, and infiltrate these leftist terror cells. To those demented souls who seek to kill, steal, and destroy our country, know this: you cannot hide, you cannot escape, and justice is coming,” the attorney general concluded.

Masked protesters have reportedly attempted to surround a Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Seattle, carrying shields and waiting outside while ICE agents and a number of detained illegal aliens remain inside.
&#8220;This is the current scene outside the ICE Seattle field office. Antifa militants have surrounded the building with blockades. Several illegal migrants are detained inside and anti-ICE activists are attempting to prevent ICE agents from transporting them out of the facility,&#8221; The Post Millennial&#8217;s Katie Daviscourt posted, sharing video that showed protesters — some of whom wore keffiyehs in addition to their face masks — using &#8220;No Parking&#8221; signs to set up a perimeter around the building.

ICE used the ensuing confusion to move several vehicles carrying the detained illegal aliens out of the building, much to the obvious dismay of the protesters.

As Daviscourt reported a short time later, protesters put the blockade back up after police took it down. &#8220;Update — Immediately after DHS and local police dismantled the blockades outside the ICE Seattle field office, anti-ICE Antifa militants put them back up.&#8221;

Seattle has already been rocked by days of protests and riots much like those that erupted in Los Angeles over ICE agents conducting raids and detaining a number of illegals there as well.

Macklemore, a rapper best known for the 2012 song “Thrift Shop,” was the victim of a home invasion at his Seattle residence over the weekend while his children and nanny were there. 
According to the police report, two men allegedly entered the residence just after midnight on Saturday morning. A woman later identified as the family nanny was able to escape and call 911 after she was hit with a blast of bear spray. 
“She escaped, but three children were still inside the house,” the report said, per <a href="https://people.com/macklemore-seattle-home-reportedly-robbed-3-children-inside-cops-11751678">People</a>. “[The caller] also added that the house belonged to a high-profile individual.”
The woman claims the intruders yelled at her, asking, “Where are the jewels, b*tch?” She then said she brought them to a bedroom and observed as the thieves “went through drawers, cabinets and raided the closet full of clothing, jewelry, and shoes.”
Social media users are pointing out the hypocrisy of police being dispatched to his home during a crisis after the rapper released the song “Hind’s Hall” last year, which was critical of law enforcement and referred to police officers as “actors with badges.”
The report also noted that the nanny believed the attack was “politically motivated for some reason.”
The 41-year-old recording artist, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, shares three children with his wife. The family lives in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. 
Macklemore was in Ireland at the time of the alleged break-in, per <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2025/06/10/macklemore-seattle-home-burglary-nanny-bear-maced/">TMZ</a>.
Macklemore&#8217;s anti-police single is also explicitly anti-Israel.
“Block the barricade until Palestine is free/When I was seven, I learned a lesson from Cube and Eazy-E,” the lyrics say. “What was it again? Oh yeah, f** the police/Actors in badges protecting property/And a system that was designed by white supremacy.”
The song was also critical of former President Joe Biden. &#8220;The blood is on your hands Biden, we can see it all,&#8221; the lyrics said. &#8220;And f*** no, I’m not voting for you in the fall.&#8221;
In 2023, at an anti-Israel rally in Washington, D.C., Macklemore took the stage and told the crowd, “I don’t know enough, but I know enough that this is a genocide,” as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rapper-slammed-after-encouraging-crowd-to-chant-fk-america">reported</a>.  Macklemore made headlines in 2024 for encouraging a crowd at a Seattle concert to chant, &#8220;F*** America.&#8221;

The New York Times, in its inexhaustible capacity to load an argument when attacking institutions it loathes, did it once again, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/29/climate/oil-companies-wrongful-death-lawsuit-heat-dome.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leaving out key information</a> when covering a ridiculous lawsuit targeting the major oil companies of the Western Hemisphere.
The <a href="https://climateintegrity.org/uploads/media/Leon_v_Exxon_Complaint.pdf">lawsuit</a> brought by Misti Leon after the death of her mother, Juliana Leon, accuses oil companies of causing Juliana’s death in 2021 because of their contribution to climate change. Juliana, 65, died in her car on June 28, 2021, from hyperthermia. The lawsuit names Exxon, British Petroleum, Chevron, Shell, Conoco, and Phillips 66 oil companies, as well as the Olympic Pipe Company, because of their contribution to climate change.
“The day Julie died was the hottest day ever recorded in Washington with temperatures in Seattle, where Julie died, peaking around 108°F. It was the third consecutive day above 100°F, and record nighttime temperatures prevented the built environment from being able to dissipate the heat it had absorbed throughout the day. In effect, Seattle had turned into an oven,” the lawsuit claims. “This heat was deadly, particularly for those who were unable to escape the heat or were otherwise vulnerable to excessive temperatures.”
“The heat dome that scorched the Pacific Northwest in 2021 would have been &#8216;virtually impossible&#8217; were it not for man-made climate change, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/07/climate/climate-change-heat-wave.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to researchers</a> with World Weather Attribution, an international group of scientists and meteorologists,&#8221; The New York Times wrote. &#8220;Around the world, extreme heat has emerged as one of the deadliest manifestations of a warming planet.”
Yet the Times never mentions some salient points regarding Leon’s death, even though they&#8217;re included in the lawsuit.
One: Two weeks before her death, doctors performed bariatric surgery on her; she had been on a liquid diet ever since. Two: The day of her death, she was returning from a doctor’s appointment where they told her she could resume eating solid foods. The Times never mentions that the car’s air conditioning broke, prompting Leon to roll down the windows and pull over to the side of the road. Three: Weather forecasts said the heat would be intense that day.
But as was pointed out by research meteorologist Ryan Maue, who issued a <a href="https://x.com/RyanMaue/status/1928226566313595142" target="_blank" rel="noopener">thread</a> on X about the lawsuit, “The research study that concluded this heat wave event was ‘virtually impossible’ without climate change does not provide an analysis of all ‘heat dome’ events from the past 2,000 years — instead focusing on model data since 1950.”

Additionally, a <a href="https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/wefo/39/2/WAF-D-23-0154.1.xml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> of the Pacific Northwest heat wave between June 25-30, 2021, asserted:

Several factors came together to produce this extreme event: a record-breaking midtropospheric ridge over British Columbia in the optimal location, record-breaking midtropospheric temperatures, strong subsidence in the lower atmosphere, low-level easterly flow that produced downslope warming on regional terrain and the removal of cooler marine air, an approaching low-level trough that enhanced downslope flow, the occurrence at a time of maximum insolation, and drier-than-normal soil moisture. 
It is shown that all-time-record temperatures have not become more frequent and that annual high temperatures only increased at the rate of baseline global warming. Although anthropogenic warming may have contributed as much as 1°C to the event, there is little evidence of further amplification from increasing greenhouse gases. Weather forecasts were excellent for this event, with highly accurate predictions of the extreme temperatures.

“Ms. Leon was first approached in late 2023 by a nonprofit group, the Center for Climate Integrity, which helps assemble and promote cases against big oil and gas companies,” the Times admitted.

After leftist radicals — some clothed in black and wearing masks — attacked a Christian rally in Seattle on Saturday, Mayor Bruce Harrell issued a statement in which he condemned the Christian organizers of the event.
The rally in Cal Anderson Park, described by Harrell as &#8220;Seattle&#8217;s most prominent LGBTQ+ neighborhood,&#8221; prompted the arrest of at least 22 people, Fox 13 <a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/mayor-harrell-far-right-rally" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, which added, “Mayor Harrell is now directing the Parks Department to review the circumstances of the rally organizer&#8217;s application.” Mayday USA, the rally&#8217;s organizer, is <a href="https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/protests-bruce-harrell">reportedly</a> described as &#8220;a faith-based activist group that calls on Christians to speak out against abortion, child trafficking and the perceived moral decline of society.&#8221;
In the wake of Saturday&#8217;s altercation, Harrell released the following <a href="https://harrell.seattle.gov/2025/05/24/mayor-harrell-statement-on-extreme-right-wing-rally-at-cal-anderson-park/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>, in which he called the service a “far-right rally” and declared there was an “extreme right-wing national effort to attack our trans and LGBTQ+ communities”:

Seattle is proud of our reputation as a welcoming, inclusive city for LGBTQ+ communities, and we stand with our trans neighbors when they face bigotry and injustice. Today’s far-right rally was held here for this very reason – to provoke a reaction by promoting beliefs that are inherently opposed to our city’s values, in the heart of Seattle’s most prominent LGBTQ+ neighborhood.
When the humanity of trans people and those who have been historically marginalized is questioned, we triumph by demonstrating our values through our words and peaceful protest – we lose our voice when this is disrupted by violence, chaos, and confusion.
Anarchists infiltrated the counter-protestors group and inspired violence, prompting SPD to make arrests and ask organizers to shut down the event early, which they did.
While there are broad First Amendment requirements around permitting events under free speech protections, I am directing the Parks Department to review all of the circumstances of this application to understand whether there were legal location alternatives or other adjustments that could have been pursued. The Police Department will complete an after-action report of this event, including understanding preparation, crowd management tactics, and review of arrests and citations.
I am grateful for those who make their voices heard in support of our neighbors without resorting to violence. In the face of an extreme right-wing national effort to attack our trans and LGBTQ+ communities, Seattle will continue to stand unwavering in our embrace of diversity, love for our neighbors, and commitment to justice and fairness.

One of the participants in the rally, Russell Johnson, the lead pastor at Pursuit NW, wrote on X that Harrell had claimed he was targeted because he was biracial, noting:

Last Friday we attended a “<a href="https://standupforscience2025.org/">Stand up for Science</a>” rally in Seattle, Washington. Given that we both have science PhDs, have spent years doing research, and think science is a great tool for investigating the world, we were hopeful we’d find something to agree with. It wasn’t easy.
The rally was part of a national movement of “Stand Up for Science” events in dozens of cities, including one on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The ostensible purpose was to protest budget cuts to science funding as part of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. And certainly the rally we saw offered plenty of budgetary complaints. Some research scientists who had lost their jobs or funding told personal stories that tugged at our heartstrings. There was something palpable throughout the protest, however, that muddied those sympathetic messages: far-Left politics, and lots of it.
Multiple times, after dutifully declaring their personal pronouns, speakers mentioned the importance of preserving “diversity, equity and inclusion,” charged that “When they come after transgender people we must fight,” and lamented Israel’s “attack” on Palestine while asking “How many Palestinians have died in Gaza?” The crowd cheered, and held up numerous protest signs affirming these messages.
Many signs bore trans symbols (one said “Trans Girls for Truth!”), LGBTQ rainbows, Palestine flags, or progressive slogans like “Eat the Rich” (one of which was amusingly biologized as “Phagocytose the Rich”). Calls for DEI and “inclusion” were ubiquitous, with a popular slogan on multiple rainbow-colored signs saying, “Powered by Science, Strengthened by Diversity.” One sign echoed Luigi Mangione, the new progressive folk-hero currently awaiting trial for the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, saying “Deny Fascism, Defend Science, Depose Oligarchy.”
There were plenty of classic “anti-fascist” (aka cultural Marxist) slogans on display. One sign said, “Science over fascism,” another read “Believe scientists, not fascists,” another promoted the hashtag “#fightfascism,” and another declared “Real Americans reject fascism.” Perhaps the strangest showed a picture of a pipet and declared, “This machine kills fascists.” So it seems everyone working in a biology lab must now support Antifa.
We saw an occasional upside-down American flag. One sign showed Trump’s face crossed out, saying “America has no king, it just has a traitor.” Others said “Trust Science Not Trump,” “Farmers Against Trump,” “Dump Trump … Send Elon to Mars,” “Trash Trump,” and of course “F*** Trump.” One sign seemed to yearn for the death of the President, saying “Compost Trump” on one side, while the other side asked, “Is he dead yet?” to which the answer “No” was given, followed by “F***.”
The rally also pushed scientism — the idea that science is the only valid source of knowledge. One sign read “Without Science, It’s All Fiction,” while another turned science into a religion: “Believe, Call, Repent … Science Saves.”

Amazingly, many in the crowd feigned ignorance that Left-wing ideology permeated the protest. Signs said, “Get your politics out of science!” or “Science is based on facts, not politics,” or “Science is Critical, Not Political.” Yet promoting an unholy union of science and politics is precisely what the “Stand Up for Science Rally” was about.
Most of the smart folks with PhDs at the protest seemed blissfully uninterested in the irony that they were protesting the interference of politics within science while they themselves endorsed the interference of politics within science. But, to his credit, one speaker got the point. Professor Chetan Seshadri of the University of Washington Department of Global Health told the audience precisely why their science funding was being cut.
“The root cause” of these budget cuts, he said, “is the erosion of trust in institutions” and “The erosion of trust in science by the voting public.” He then charged scientists in the audience to show more “humility” in how they do science.
Great idea! But if the rally wanted to reassure mainstream voters that taxpayer-funded science isn’t heavily infiltrated by Left-wing scientists-turned-activists, this absolutely was not the way.
Oh, and the rally repeatedly paid lip service to “academic freedom,” while trashing minority scientific views. The very ethos underlying the event was that “Science” represents a monolithic set of consensus ideas, and “Standing Up for Science” means not just promoting those viewpoints, but squelching those who disagree.
The public is rightfully repelled by this hypocrisy. In recent years they’ve witnessed too many politically motivated attempts to suppress credible scientists who challenged the consensus on Covid vaccines, pandemic lockdowns, evolution, climate change, and more. Here’s a final example.
One speaker at the main &#8220;Stand Up for Science&#8221; Rally in D.C. was Francis Collins, who headed the NIH from 2009 to 2021. As political scientist John West <a href="https://x.com/JGWestDI/status/1898198640331763734" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notes</a>, while Collins played guitar at the rally, “Behind him stood … people carrying signs like ‘Trump Trashes Science,’ ‘He Musk Go,’ and … ‘Diabolical Oligarch Grifting Efficiently’ (DOGE).” Also appearing at the D.C. rally was science popularizer Bill Nye “the science guy,” who charged that those on “the other side” must “oppose this suppression of science” and stop “censoring science.” Yet Collins himself has become notorious for doing just that.
In 2020, Collins sought to dismiss credible experts and lockdown critics like Jay Bhattacharya as “fringe” and “not mainstream science.” But Bhattacharya wasn’t fringe. He was a professor at Stanford, and author of the Great Barrington Declaration — a warning from epidemiologists and public health experts that the lockdowns were doing more harm than good. Scientists like Collins used name-calling and rank-pulling to shout down credible minority scientific viewpoints.
For the record, we’re not “anti-vax” (we both got the Covid vaccine), but much more than that, we are pro-academic freedom. So is the public — and their disgust at politically driven intolerance in the scientific community led them to vote accordingly last November.
As a consequence, Bhattacharya is now poised to replace Collins as head of the NIH, hopefully heralding a new era of real intellectual freedom and objectivity — showing what it really means to “stand up for science.”
